SOURIS SCHOOL NEWSLETTER http://schools.shmb.ca/sci. Number 18, May 17, 2013 NEWS FROM MR. WILLIAMS Spring is here…and the rains have arrived just in time for all the hardy campers out there to be able to enjoy May long weekend. Congratulations to Linda McRae-Walker, Brenda Swaenepoel, and the entire cast and crew of “A Kidsummer Night’s Dream”. From all indications, all shows were exceptional and all were well attended. Great job, everyone. All the time, energy, and commitment that you put into the show certainly paid off. The male and female Rugby teams returned from their trip to Calgary with a whole lot of experience under their belts. The top-notch competition that you faced, combined with the class and dignity that you displayed, will go a long way to ensuring success throughout the season and into the future. Great work. Thank you to Mr. Yon and your supporting cast of coaches, managers, and chaperones. I would like to welcome Reese Ryckman into the world. Reese was born May 6th, 2013 to Angie and Mark Ryckman. On that note I would like to welcome Shayla Zadorozny to our staff. Shayla is a new graduate out of Brandon University and is filling Mrs. Ryckman 0.5 FTE position until the end of the June. A number of changes will be occurring prior (hopefully prior) to the first day of classes next fall. I have listed them below:

- There will be 4 gr. 1-2 Multi-age classrooms

- A classroom must be renovated for the addition of the 4th gr. 1-2 Multi-age room

- There will be 3 gr. 3-4 Multi-age classrooms

- Gr. 5 students will be moving up to Middle Years end of the building

- The Nursery School/Daycare will be moving to Mrs. Ryckman's room

- The Before and After School program requires more space and is moving to Mrs. O'Brien's soon-to-be-former room. Building access to these programs will now be through the Middle/Gymnasium entrance and parking for the

- Nursery School will be on the street in front of the building.

- A large overhead door will be put into the South wall of the Woods room to

allow for us to improve our Construction program. The plan is to have a fenced-in enclosure as well. This plan also includes the demolition of a portion of the wall separating the Woods and Art rooms to allow for the expansion of the Woods program.

- As a result, the Art room will be moving from its present location. The plan, at present, is to utilize the South hut and the present Gr. 6 Science room as the Art rooms.

That is all for now. Have a great weekend.

Some of our high school students participated in a CTS Rube Goldberg Science Challenge in St. Leon on Wednesday, May 8th. Their task was to filter dirty water through a series of simple machines. They competed against students from Miami, Killarney, Treherne, and Carman Schools. Students from left to right: Rhett Dodds, Cassie Rekken, Tara Farmer, Wyatt Hiebert, Alberto Pozo, Sabrina Kyle, David Criddle, Adam Lamb, Phillip Campbell, Matt Williams •Mr. Cory Skelton Middle Years News As the planning process has begun for the 2013/2014 school year, we have made a decision in the restructuring of our Middle Years area. This fall our grade 5 students will be moving up into the Middle Years end of the school. The province of Manitoba defines Middle Years as “the education provided for young adolescents in Grades 5, 6, 7, and 8” (Manitoba Education 2010, “Engaging Middle Years Students in Learning – Transforming Middle Years Education in Manitoba) and with the relocation of several classrooms that will be occurring in our school throughout the summer, this decision was a natural transition that became evident.

If you have any questions regarding the joining of the grade 5s to Middle Years, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Rolfe at [email protected] or 483-6233.

At McMahon Stadium in Calgary

Even though they are in Calgary, homework has to be done. The Souris Sabres kicked off their tour in Calgary May 9th. The Lady Sabres came up against City Finalists Sir Winston Churchill High School and it was a physical game right from the start. The game went back and forth, but the experienced Churchill side proved too much as they defeated the Sabres 19-0. Emily Tuttosi was named player of the game for Souris. The Souris boys really brought it and took it to the home side defeating Churchill 43-5. The physical play of the Sabres at the breakdowns and in the set piece really put Churchill on the back foot. Scoring for the Sabres were: Sheldon Kowalchuk 3 Tries, 4 Converts Michael Fortin 1 Try, Blair Penno 1 Try Tyson McRae 1 Try, Carter Suski 1 Try Sheldon Kowalchuk was named player of the game for Souris. The Souris Sabres finished their Calgary Tour playing the Western Canada Redmen today. Western Canada is one of the largest schools in Calgary with over 2,000 students. The Lady Sabres kicked off first and played very well. The game

went back and forth but the game remained scoreless just before the half until Western Canada capitalized off a Sabre handling error and scored to make it 5-0 at the half. The Lady Sabres dominated the second half territorially and possession wise, but came up just short in a great effort. Final score Western Canada 5 Souris 0. Emily Tuttosi was named player of the game. The Boys came up against a big squad but took it to Western Canada physically in the first half and led 5-0 at the half when Conrad May punched over a try. The boys gave up a quick score in the second half and Western Canada took a 7-5 lead. Western Canada scored again 7 minutes later to make it 12-5. The Sabres never gave up and punched one over on the final play when Michael Fortin touched one down to make it 12-10 Western Canada. The Sabres needed to make the convert to tie the game, but the kick just sailed to the left bringing the final score 12-10 for Western Canada. Sheldon Kowalchuk was named player of the game Even though the Sabres didn't get the wins today, they proved they can compete with the big city 4A schools and certainly grew as a team. The Sabres look forward to returning home and finishing their season. Great work Sabres! Back home in league action the Varsity Rugby teams played the Minnedosa Chancellors Thursday night and first place in the final standings was on the line for both teams. The Lady Sabres got off to a great start and controlled most of the play during the game and defeated the Chancellors 32-12. Scoring for the Sabres were Amy Tuttosi and Maggie Murphy both with two tries each. Also scoring tries were Alix Sabeski and Courtney Roy with one each. Charlotte West kicked a convert. The Ladies next action will be a semi-final game next week. Time and date TBA. The Varsity boys also played a solid game in a match up of undefeated teams. The Sabres battled hard in a physical game against the Chancellors and worked their way to a 27-7 victory. Scoring for the Sabres were Seth Walker and Blair Penno with 2 tries each. Michael Fortin also scored a try and Sheldon Kowalchuk kicked a convert. The first place finish sets up a semi-final match against the Crocus Plainsmen. Kick-off and date TBA. Great job Sabres and good luck in the playoffs!

CAMPBELL’S SOUP “LABELS FOR EDUCATION” THANK YOU to everyone who clips and saves those labels and UPC codes. If you use these products then save those labels – Campbell’s Condensed soup, Chunky soup, Broth, Ramen Hearty Noodles, Ramen Hearty Noodles, Ready to serve soup, Habitant, Gardennay, Soup at Hand, V8Soups, Easy cooking sauces along with Prego sauce, V8 Splash/Fusion, Pace Salsa, Goldfish crackers. Collection bins are at the school, Big Way and Robbins Fine Foods. It seems like a lot of work but the labels would be just heading to the garbage anyways. The school appreciates everyone that has supported this program, so keep on saving those labels.
