welcomeTO PORTLAND STATE UNIVERSITY
Portland State University has close to 100 Native Faculty and staff across campus. This is a wonderful tribute to the diversity of our learning environment and certainly to our school as a campus where indigenous people are valued.
“Why is college awesome? Because in addition to many students finding themselves in impassioned debates in class and clubs, you get to ask “Why?” and feel empowered by it. Yes, it makes you stronger! This is an exciting way to learn about people and about the diversity of beliefs. No one can take your education away. It is one of the few things in life that lasts forever in you!” – Jillma Meneses, JD Portland State University Chief Diversity Officer

Take care of yourself and your family: Most college graduates earn a lot MORE money during their working years than people who stop their education at high school.
Education beyond high school gives you the opportunity to explore your interests and experience life success in general.
The more education you get, the more likely you will get a job you like.
Continuing your education after high school is much more important for your generation than it was for your parents’ generation. Today, most good jobs require more than a high school diploma.

The modern game hockey is based on a game called stick-ball that the North American indians played.
HOW TO PLAY :
Players face each other on a field with goals at either end. 1.2 . A small ball is handled by
players using long sticks ending in a loop.
Each team tries to advance the ball down the field to the other team’s goalpost, while never touch-ing the ball with their hands.
Points are scored when the ball strikes the opponent’s goal.

Nine Multiple Tip: Hold your hands in front of you with your fingers spread out. For 9 X 3 bend your third finger down. (9 X 4 would be the fourth finger etc.) You have 2 fingers in front of the bent finger and 7 after the bent finger. Thus the answer must be 27. This technique works for the 9 times tables up to 10.

There was this village on the Washington side of the Columbia Gorge. And this was long ago when people were not yet real people, and that is when we could talk to the animals.
And so Coyote — the Trickster —came down the river to the village and asked the people if they were living well. And they said “Yes, we are, but you need to talk to our chief, Tsagaglal. She lives up in the hill.”
So Coyote pranced up the hill and asked Tsagaglal if she was a good chief or one of those evildoers. She said, “No, my people live well. We have lots of salmon, venison, berries, roots, good houses. Why do you ask?” And Coyote said, “Changes are going to happen. How will you watch over your people?” And so she didn’t know.
And it was at that time that Coyote changed her into a rock (naming the petroglyph, She Who Watches) to watch her people forever.

I started college not knowing what I wanted to do. The year I took off [to find myself], I worked in the mountains as a surveyor on a civil engineering
crew. I was hanging off cliffs and holding a prism to reflect an infrared beam of light from my
distance measuring device.The practicality
of math and the guy I worked for convinced me to go back to school and major in engineering. And I did.” (Michigan Daily.com)

Northwest Indians, who were master carpenters, began building wooden homes at least 5,000 years ago. Their toolboxes contained mussel-shell knives, stone drills, grinding stones, and fine shark-skin “sandpaper.”
Native builders of the Northwest used mositure-resistant western red-cedar to roof and side their homes. Modern builders continue to use cedar for the same reason.
