Hello, Cypress Woods Members!

This summer has been awesome, so many of our members have either stayed or returned for a summer visit. Our latest events have been well attended and a good time was had by all.

We thank you for your support and understanding during the major aerifications on your course. The aggressive approach on the course has been necessary and successful, the results will be noticeable this winter when play is at its peak.

For our members that did not visit this summer, upon your return you will notice some of the projects we have completed. The Rest Stations on the golf course and at the concession stand have been refreshed, a noticeable improvement to your Club. We have new roofs on the Golf Maintenance

Building and the Clubhouse. These projects were in your Roof Reserve budget made possible with funds already allocated and collected.

We have a new software program, Jonas, which is now up and running. This is a program that is designed for Club Management; there are close to 40 clubs in the area using this program, as well as a number of clubs up north. The system will allow you, the member, to go into your account the day after you sign a chit to your member account and view all of the details. We will be sending correspondence to all members asking to consider going paperless with statements, and to update phone numbers and email addresses. We will also be launching a new website in the next couple months.

The tennis court area is in the final stages of renovation. We have new surfaces, the southwest court is now dedicated for pickle ball, with four courts and permanent nets. The look and functionality is a major improvement to member play and property values.

The parking lot will be resurfaced and restriped in September beginning while the course is closed on the 21st and 22nd. This project is also in the reserve budget and is being done while the price of petroleum is down for further cost savings.

Personally, Autumn is my favorite time of year! As we head into fall we have completed our calendar of great events for the 2015-2016 season with the help of the previous House Committee and fine-tuned by our new Committee. Feedback from our (787+) members helps us achieve “member satisfaction,” although we may not make everyone happy all of the time, we do strive to have these numbers as high as possible. The comment cards for Food and Beverage have gained us much insight on what members feel is positive, as well as areas that need improvement. Our dinner menus are now changing weekly with new and creative menu items at various price points for all to enjoy. Tuesday and Wednesday lunch will see the return of the Soup and Salad Bar. Bill Sargent, Director of Food & Beverage, will provide details on the evening events.

In the previous newsletter, my article began with the definition of the word “Rumor” (our Summer word), and we will kick off the Fall with “Perception.” As you may recall, we will have a word to play with each newsletter. The words will be used to bring attention and focus, culminating at the end of the year with a quest for the best short story (200 words or less) utilizing all of the words in the details of the story as key points. The stories will be awarded prizes for different categories. The categories will be listed in the next newsletter as well as the information on submitting the stories and the deadlines. Winning stories will be published in the February or March newsletter.

The Master Board, myself and the RCARC have redesigned the Cypress Woods Rental Application and the process itself for anyone renting their units. We have new forms available in the Clubhouse Administrative Office and on our website (www.cypresswoodsgolf.com)- look for more details in another article in the body of this newsletter. The new process is in compliance with the Cypress Woods G&CC Covenants and will be implemented for the security and well-being of everyone in this wonderful community.

Many of you will be returning in the fall, this is very exciting and the entire TEAM at Cypress Woods is looking forward to seeing you all soon. If I do not see you in the dining room, I will watch for you on the golf course when I am out and about!

Best Regards,

Grace Lennon

Golf NEWS

In the past I have received many questions regarding top dressing. I would like to explain why we top dress and why we use different types of sand. Top dressing is utilized for many reasons and is a recommended agronomical practice used by the USGA, universities, and other turf research programs. Top dressing is also carried out differently to achieve multiple results. In the summertime we use white sand in order to dilute organic matter in the soil and reduce thatch. As new grass shoots form the older leaf dies and falls off, creating organic material. This material needs to be deluded in order to maintain healthy soil structure for optimal plant growth. Lite top dressing application during times when there is open play, is mostly carried out to increase smoothness and putting speed. The sand settles in the grass filling in space between the surface of the soil and the tips of the grass resulting in a firmer, smooth surface. This also is a recommended practice of the USGA. These applications are done at different intervals and amounts. Heavier more frequent applications are done during the summer months and less and lighter applications in cooler weather. We may top dress weekly during the summer and possibly every other week during cold periods. This can be simply put - when grass is actively growing and we have somewhere to “hide the sand”, we apply more and when the grass slows or stops growing and we don’t have a place to “hide the sand” we cease applications.

Different colors and textures of sand are used for different purposes. Most of the time we use regular white sand but at times use green and black sand. The green sand is utilized for filling divots and can be ordered with or without nutrients and additives. We use dyed green sand where dye is added during the mixing / blending process. Green sand is mostly used for aesthetic purposes so we don’t see all the white filled divots throughout the course, although it is said there are some added benefits of heat absorption of the darker color increases soil temperature allowing the grass to grow faster speeding divot recovery time. Okay, now that we understand why we top dress the big question is why we use black sand? Basically because this black sand blend has organic material that holds moisture and draws heat that increases soil temperatures. Warmer soil temperatures increases growth of Bermuda grass and in turn speeds recovery from stress when applied to foot traffic and car traffic during the busy golfing season.

I hope everyone has a great season. If you ever have any questions regarding the practices we do, suggestions for the course, or any feedback, please do not hesitate to contact our general manager, or greens and grounds committee chair and we will try to answer or accommodate you the best that we can. Until next time, don’t forget to repair those ball marks, sand the divots level and keep all four wheels on the path when traveling the golf course! Thank you for your support.

Recreation NewsOur tennis court renovation project is well underway and plans are to complete by mid-September. Those tennis players and picklers returning for another season will see a truly improved facility – four permanent pickleball courts, two color playing surfaces, newly painted court fencing, and a patio area between courts. Plans include putting shade and seating in the patio area between the north and south courts for resting and waiting players.

Our tennis and pickleball round robin events no longer need to be scheduled on alternating days because of same court use. Tennis and pickleball can be played every day of the week. Members not yet familiar with pickleball and have interest in playing are encouraged to come to a pickleball round robin event where someone will be available to provide instruction.

At this time, pickleball round robin play is scheduled for Tues., Wed. and Fri. 8:30 – 11:00am; tennis round robin is scheduled for Mon. and Thurs. 8:30 – 11:00am. Court time can be scheduled by sending a request to Jim Helle at [email protected]. Members and guests can play anytime court time is not scheduled. A key to the pickleball equipment chest is available at the Pro Shop and in the Clubhouse Administration Office.

Rental NewsThe Rental process has been reviewed with some changes implemented. Both Owners and Tenants require this information to make the process as clear and efficient as possible.

We require a completed Rental Application (all questions answered, all signatures required), a copy of the Lease Agreement between Owner and Tenant, and a $125.00 Application Fee. If opting for the additional Membership Transfer, please provide that form accompanied by a $250.00 Transfer Fee. (Checks can be separate or combined and should be made payable to “Cypress Woods”.) Please note that the Membership Transfer includes reduced-rate Golf, access to the Fitness Center, Clubhouse Pool & Spa, and a merchandise discount in the Pro Shop. Additionally, presentation of your Membership ID Card when dining in The Grille Room &/or Dining Room helps the Owner toward their $600 annual Food Minimum balance. When the Owner allows a Membership Transfer they do just that, thus relinquishing their own rights to the amenities mentioned above.

Annual Lease Renewals to the same property require no additional fees, just a new Rental Application and updated copy of the Lease.

Please review the House & Ground Rules available on our website or pick up a copy in the Clubhouse Administrative Office. Owners are asked to please keep a copy in their unit for their Tenants. It is important to note that our Bylaws dictate that Tenants are not allowed to have any type of pets. Vehicles require parking stickers or hang tags to avoid being ticketed and/or towed.
