Correspondence, manuscripts, notes, documents, photographs,subject files, art reproductions, and printed materials of Wladimir Weidle(i.e., Vladimir Vasilfevich Veidle; 1895-1979)» writer and scholar. Almostthe entire collection concerns Weidle's life in France, from the 1920s on.Correspondence consists of letters by many Russian emigre, French, English,German, Italian, and American writers and scholars. The largest groups ofcataloged letters are by Igor1 Chinnov (56 items), Iurii Ivask (193),Vladislav Khodasevich (kk), and Gleb Struve (^3). There are also lettersfrom Bernhftrd Berenson, Marc Chagall, Jacques Maritain, Henry Miller, andMarina Tsvetaeva, and many letters by Weidle to his wife from 191^-72.Manuscripts by Weidle include articles, lectures, stories, poems, and manybroadcasts which he made for Radio Liberty; Weidle's notes deal with manyartistic and literary topics. Manuscripts by other authors include itemsby, for example, Iurii Ivask and Igor1 Chinnov. Printed materials in thecollection include books and newspaper and journal articles by Weidle,

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE; WLADIMIR WEIDLfl

Wladimir Weidle (in Russian, Vladimir Vasil'evich Veidle) was Jborn in St. Petersburg on 1/lU March 1895- In 19l6> he received anadvanced degree in art history at Petrograd University. He thentaught at the new university in Perm*, Russia, and in 1921-2U atPetrograd University. He left the Soviet Union in the summer of192U, and arrived in Paris in the fall.

In Paris, Weidle taught art history at the Orthodox TheologicalInstitute (Pravoslavnyi Bogoslovskii Institut) in 1932-52, and wroteart and literary criticism for French and Russian newspapers andjournals. From the 1930s to the 1950s, he was probably better knownas a French than as a Russian writer. He published in such journalsas Le Mois and Nouvelle Revue Frangaise, and for such emigre Russiantitles as Vozrozhdenie and Posledniia Novosti. His most importantsingle book was published in French in 1936: Les abeilles d'Aristee:Essai sur le destin actuel des lettres et des arts; it was subsequentlytranslated into other languages and published in an expanded and revisededition. Another well-known work was La Russie: Absente et presente

In the post-World War II period, although he remained actiye as a"western" art historian and critic, publishing in French and Germantitles and teaching at various European and American institutions,his interests increasingly turned to Russian matters. From the 1950son, he made many broadcasts in Russian for Radio Liberty. In hislater years he also wrote many articles for Novoe Russkoe Slovo andNovyi Zhurnal. Books which he published in Russian in this periodinclude Vechernii den* (1952), and, posthumously, Embriologiia poezii(1980). ' (')

In 1930, Weidle married Liudmila Viktorovna Baranovskaia. He ^J'became in 1951 a French citizen. He died on 5 August 1979.
