•Also called zheng

•One of most ancient musical instruments

•Its shape is a rectangle, looks like a Chinese plucked zither

•Usually has 18-23 stringed zither with movable bridges

•Became prominent during the Qin period

•By the Tang Dynasty, it was arguably the most commonly played instrument

•Players wore fake nails to play it

•Techniques used:

•Basic plucking actions (use right or both hands) at the right portion

•Pressing actions at the left portion (by the left hand to produce pitch ornamentations and vibrato) as well as tremolo (right hand)

PipaPipa•A four-stringed Chinese musical instrument

• Sometimes called the Chinese lute.

•Has 12-26 frets ranging

•Has been played for almost two thousand years

•Several related instruments in Northeast and Southeast Asia are derived from the pipa

•The Japanese biwa

•The Vietnamese đàn tỳ bà

•The Korean bipa (but the Korean instrument is no longer used)

Sanxian•The sanxian is a three-stringed fretless plucked musical instrument

• Has a long fingerboard

•The body is traditionally made from snakeskin stretched over a rounded rectangular resonator

•Made in several sizes for different purposes

•Has a dry, somewhat percussive tone and loud volume similar to the banjo

• Is used in nanguan and Jiangnan sizhu ensembles, as well as many other folk and classical ensembles.

Yueqin•Lute with a round, hollow wooden body which gives it the nickname ‘moon guitar’ •Important instrument in the Beijing opera orchestra•Take the role of main melodic instrument in lieu of the bowed string section •The frets on all Chinese lutes are high so the fingers never touch the actual body—distinctively different from western fretted instruments. •Famous representative: Johnny C.J. Lin
