Welcome to Our Home

A House That Grows with a Family We built our home in 1987 from this plan that was featured in the Progress Index “House of the Week” section on Sunday, October 5 1986. Here is the article written by Pat Lucas that sold us on this design...

High on a house shopper’s priority list is a plan that combines classic charm, affordability and flexibility. This design by architect Lester Cohen offers all this and promises more. The house is moderate in size and with the attached two-car garage measures just over 76 feet on the property. Sheathed all around with durable cedar siding, the center section, with its welcoming front porch, is balanced by the garage and bedroom wings. For a young family, the first-floor layout is complete, consisting of a spacious kitchen and dining

room, a fine great room and a big bedroom suite complete with private bath and family lavatory. As the family grows, the second floor with its two bedrooms and bath, fits neatly within the family plan. Similarly, when the children grow up and move away, the home is still very comfortable. Even a single owner can enjoy this home while realizing the resale potential of a three-bedroom, two story home. The traffic patterns are carefully planned to eliminate wasted spaces; all areas are easily reachable from the various entry doors. This is particularly noteworthy in the service area, where access from the front porch, garage and rear porch can be buffered by the kitchen and utility areas - as welcome in a small household as it is where there are active youngsters - helping to keep an attractive home at its best.

Welcome to Our Home The rear location of the formal living room, with access right from the front hall is geared for privacy, and in size and amenities it would suit a much larger home. The fireplace is a beautiful and functional architectural feature. The French doors open to the screened porch, one step below at the back. As an entertainment area or just for family use, the combined indoor and outdoor spaces can’t be beat. A full-size dining room, complete with bay window, opens off the front hall and adjoins the great room. The spacious kitchen is at the front of the house and is very well equipped with counter, overhead cupboards and appliances in a modified square-shaped area. A center island makes for an effective separation between the kitchen and dining room, although a full divider wall could be added to separate the two rooms if desired. There are service entries from the garage and front porch, with the utility room/laundry to protect the kitchen proper from drafts and tracked-in dirt. The full view back door brightens the kitchen and also provides access to the side porch. The great advantage for a majority of families is the complete master bedroom suite on the first floor. There are special features in addition to the size of the room; a dressing area, superior closets and a large private bathroom. The suite is set apart from the main living areas by the front and rear halls. Economically located back to back with the alcove powder room, off the back hall and convenient to family and guests alike. On the

second floor are two more bedrooms each with unusually good closet space and a shared bath. Statistics: This design has a living room, dining room, kitchen, three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a powder room totaling 1,915 square feet. There is a two car garage, a screened rear porch, a laundry room, and a deck.
