Some things Farquhar did before starting the settlement…
Clearing the trees ,bushes and tall grass to build attap houses for himself and his men.
To defend the settlement, they built gun positions and mounted artilleries, facing the sea.
How the settlement developed
• Farquhar was made the first Resident
• He invited settlers from Melaka
• Stationed an official on St. John’s island to invite ships to Singapore
Problems which Farquhar had to solve
Food-When people from Melaka heard about Singapore, they sailed down with chickens, ducks, fruits , vegetables etc.
Violence-Farquhar started a small police force but it proved insufficient due to its small number.
Pests-Farguhar offered money for every rat or centipede killed
Who really founded Singapore?
Here are some points you can consider…
What do you mean by “founded”?Raffles signed the Anglo-Dutch treatyRaffles only briefly visited Singapore thriceFarquhar built the settlement from scratchJohn Crawfurd signed the treaty which made
Singapore a British possession
More on Crawfurd
He became the next Resident after Farquhar was dismissed after falling out with Raffles.
He carried out the plan laid by Raffles thus the beauty and orderliness of the settlement.
Made Singapore a British possession.
Summing it- Singapore was chosen by the British because of…
European rivalry and Dutch monopoly in the region
Importance of India-China trade
Unsuitability of Penang and Bencoolen as trading ports
Extension activity
Sultan Hussien was succeeded by his son, Ali Iskandar Shah.
Ali ordered the construction of the Istana Kampong Glam.
The throne was passed to Sultan Allum or Allong after his death.
The descendants of Sultan Hussein did not leave the palace despite their loss of royal status.
They are still living in Singapore and Malaysia today.
At around the same time, the British recognised Abu Bakar of Johor as Sultan and putting an end to the royal line of Sultan Hussein
Farquhar claimed to be the true founder of Singapore
After and before Raffles died.
He might have done it because Raffles dismissed him from duty due to their fallout.
By submitting a letter to Board of directors at E.I.C.
Saying that the settlement was formed at his suggestion and matured under his personal management.
He only gave up when he died.
