    Lightning protection equipoten-tial bonding systemVarious points should be observedwhen arresting the lightning cur-rent. Metallic components withouta conductive connection into thebuilding must be connected dir-ectly to the lightning protection.Active DC/AC cables and datasystems are included in the equi-potential bonding using suitablelightning current and surge ar-restors at the entry to the building.All metallic parts of a building andelectrically powered equipmentand their supply cable must be in-tegrated into the lightning protec-tion system.

    Separation distanceAir-conditioning systems, electricalsensors and photovoltaic systemsare examples for roof structures inwhich the separation distancemust be maintained. This distanceis required to avoid dangeroussparking and lightning compon-ents between both the externallightning protection system and themetallic building parts and electric-al devices. In particular, when PV systems arerefitted, this is often not possibledue to the construction situation.Here, the insulated isCon cablecan help. The ideal solution withwhich a separation distance of0.75 m through the air and 1.5 mfor solid matter can be maintained.

    Protection through organisation-al measuresAt the transition point of the elec-trical system, e.g. house connec-tion box, main distribution, VDE0100-712 requires the attachmentof the standardised informationsign / fire brigade sign. The firebrigade can recognise the PV sys-tem through the identification andfireproof routing of the energisedDC cables.

    Fire protection for PV cablesUnswitchable DC cables of the PVsystem must be routed safely inthe building to prevent damage tothe insulation. Even in case of fire,the fire brigade must be able torescue people safely. According toVDE-AR-2100-712, protection ofthe DC cables is possible usingsuitable insulation or a fire protec-tion duct according to DIN 4102.With Pyroline Sun PV, DC cablesalready installed in the emergencyand escape route can be protec-ted later in accordance with thestandard.

    Protection against sunlight andhigh temperaturesStrong UV radiation can causedamage and destruction toplastics.     Planning aid, protective angle method

    Protective angle method for roofstructuresYou have protected the flat-roofedbuilding correctly according to thestandard VDE 0185-305 (IEC62305). You must now protect allroof structures with interceptionrods. This involves observing theseparating distance (s).

    If the roof structure has a conduct-ive continuation into the building(e.g. with a stainless steel pipewith a connection to the ventilationor air-conditioning system), thenthe separating distance (s) mustalways be maintained. The inter-ception rod must be erected at acertain distance from the buildingto be protected. This distancesafely prevents arcing of the light-ning current and dangerous sparkcreation.

    Roof structures with an individu-al air-termination rod

    The protective angle for lightningrods varies according to lightningprotection class.You can find the protective angle in the table for the most commoninterception rods of up to 2 m inlength.

    Lightning protection equipotential bonding system and separation dis-tance

    Separating distance (s) between the lightning protection system and cable support system

    Important measuresThe following points must be takeninto account to guarantee compre-hensive protection of the PV sys-tem: Local earthing (PAS) must be

    connected to the main equipo-tential bonding (HPAS).

    Equipotential bonding cablesmust be routed close to and par-allel with the DC cables.

    Data cables must be included inthe protection concept.

    Separation distanceAccording to DIN EN 62305, thelightning protection system mustbe erected at a separation dis-tance (s) from the parts of the PVsystem. Usually, a separation dis-tance (s) (= safety distance) of0.5 m to 1 m is sufficient.
