A LETTER FROM HANNAH …….

Hello everyone! Some of you have requested a more thorough detailed explanation of what I do here. So I

thought I might write a "Day in the Life" type newsletter. This particular day was Tuesday, October 24th. 6:00 am. My alarm goes off. I groan and snooze it for another ten minutes (I am not a morning person).

Finally, I get up and start getting ready for work. I manage to leave the apartment at 6:50, but because I’m still a little sleepy, I walk slowly so a normally 20-minute walk takes me about 30. I walk into the office and greet everyone there with a cheerful “Good morning!” in Japanese. A chorus of “Good morning” is the response, some in English, some in Japanese. Interestingly enough, it is the non-English teachers who greet me in English. I make myself a cup of coffee and settle down to grade some high school presentations. At 8:15, the teachers assemble for the morning meeting. Announcements and sports results are given. Today is a short meeting, so I have time to sit down and finish my coffee before morning chapel at 8:30. Since it’s Tuesday, the high school juniors are in the chapel. Everyone "else" listens through the broadcast system. The school’s chaplain, Pastor Che, preaches on Mark 4:8. I try to listen, but he uses really complicated Japanese, and I am quickly lost. Tuesday is my busy day of the week, but luckily, I have first hour to finish the last-minute preparations. I prepare lesson plans for the high school first year curriculum, as the teachers for that curriculum will have a meeting third hour and we’ll discuss it. Normally, I don’t lead that curriculum, but as the teacher who does is on maternity leave, I’ve taken over. The bell to end first hour ends. How did that hour go so fast? Time to teach! We are in the middle of a Show and Tell project. One of my students tries to use the hook/topic sentence of “Do you have a body?” After talking about it with him, he changes it to “Do you like to dance?” His Show and Tell topic is his dance club uniform. The rest of the class is uneventful. Third hour comes. Time for the meeting! I open it and we talk about scheduling, lesson plans, things we want to change, students who are chronically late or absent. We finish with twenty minutes to go in the hour. I am pleased. Another successful meeting. Since we finished early, I have time for another cup of coffee. This pleases me more than the successful meeting, to be honest. Then it’s time for junior high! Today, class is in the library. Students are researching famous people from history. Each student, in a class of 25, has a different person. There are people from all over the world. Some students work diligently at their research, while others disappear into the stacks “looking for books”. I remind them that the librarian has already pulled all of the books they need, and to please return to their desks. They do so with an air of defeat. The bell rings. Lunchtime! I go to the cafeteria with one of my teacher friends and order curry. We chat with some of the graduated students who attend the college on campus. Their confidence in English has soared. I enjoy talking with them. All too quickly, lunchtime is over and it’s time for class. This class is high school, and the same lesson plan as second hour. These students work much faster. I make a note to plan something extra for next class since they won’t need the full two classes to write their rough drafts. In fact, some students actually finish before the one class is over. Then, it’s sixth hour, and I have the hour free. I use it to finish grading speeches for my junior high first years. They have just finished a speech where they interviewed a teacher and introduced the teacher to the class. All of them did an excellent job. At 3:15, it’s time for cleaning. I supervise a group of girls who clean the 3rd floor and 2nd floor main staircase of the school. They come late, and work slowly, but they do finish on time. Everyone goes back to their homerooms, and the teachers go back to the office and we have closing worship over the broadcast system. At 4:00, I head over to the junior high. One of the students will take an English proficiency test in a week, so I help her to practice for the interview section. She stumbles over the pronunciation of a few words, but overall is very good. She is a good student who studies hard. At 5:00, we have an extra English department meeting. We’re writing the English portion of the entrance exam. It ends up being an hour of teachers arguing over two different questions, and the grammar. We finally finish at 6:15, but I have one more task to do before I go home. One of the high school seniors, is going to take her college entrance exam soon, and she wants to practice for the English interview. I work with her for another 45 minutes. She wants to go to Nagasaki University and be a junior high English teacher. She is passionate about it, and it shows. Finally, we finish and I can go home. I decide to order pizza for dinner, because I’m too tired to cook and then I can have leftover pizza for lunch on Wednesday. I go to bed that night tired, but satisfied with the day. So, there you have it! That is a typical day, though I don’t always end up staying so late. Sometimes it happens, but I try not to do it every day. Of course, the Japanese teachers are almost always there that late, or later. It’s part of their culture to stay later than the people who have worked there longer. I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving with lots of delicious food! Thank you again for all of your prayers and support!

AGAPE PRAYER MINISTRY Our children are vulnerable and are being exploited in many ways in our society. There is often little protection for them. How can we, the church, cover our children in protection and blessing? One of the components of a national Lutheran ministry, Cherish All Children, gives us a simple

and easy solution: prayer.

The prayer component of this program focuses on connecting with the youth in our congregation specifically by lifting them up in prayer. One of the ways we have for telling our kids we care

deeply about them is through intentional prayer. Consider what it would be like if every young person in our congregation was prayed for daily, intentionally, and by name by an adult member of

our congregation. What transformation might be possible? What would the children think? Of what value would this be to the adults? How might it impact leadership?

The beauty of this effort is that as we surround our children with prayer, we too deepen our relationship not only with our young people, but with our God as well.

Over the next few months, you are going to be hearing more about the Agape Prayer Ministry at Solomon. This ministry will rely on you and the way you can become an important part in

connecting with our youth by lifting them up in prayer, asking God to be with them to protect them, and helping them feel loved and supported. We can't wait to begin!
