Dear friends at St . Louise,

Last week I gave you the basis for the sacramental theology of the Catholic Faith. This week I will explore briefly five of the seven sacraments of the Church.

As humans, we are steeped in rituals and symbolism; and our expression of faith is no different. The number seven is highly meaningful in Scripture, for two reasons. First, because it is on the seventh day, when all is completed, that God rests in the creation story, seven became a symbol of completion and perfection. Second, this seven-day creation narrative helped the Jewish people establish a calendar that provided a day each week for worship and marked other religious celebrations throughout the year.

As Catholics, we believe that Jesus is the climax of creation and that he established a new form of worship – what we now call the Mass – which we celebrate on a new day, Sunday, the day of the Resurrection. Jesus is present to each of us in many ways. In keeping with the symbolism of completion and perfection, the Church has seven formal ways, called sacraments, in which Jesus is present to us. As I mentioned last week, a “sacrament” is a physical sign of grace instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church.

Conceptually, the seven sacraments fall into three categories: Initiation, Healing, and Service.

In the Sacraments of Initiation, Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist, Christ is present to us by transforming our very selves to be like Christ. In Baptism we became Christians, temples of the Holy Spirit. In Confirmation we are sealed with the Holy Spirit and given courage to live out the fullness of our faith. In the Eucharist, which Catholics believe to be the real presence of Christ, the Body and Blood of the Lord continually feed and transform us into Christ's own body. These three sacraments are what initiate, unite, and make us part of the Church.

In the Sacraments of Healing, Anointing of the Sick and Confession, Christ is present to us by providing us spiritual and sometimes physical healing. Anointing of the Sick is given (to those old enough to reason) to people who have a serious health condition, before or after surgery, or near the time of death. This sacrament can be repeated if the person’s condition worsens, or if they recover and then become seriously ill again. Through the anointing, Christ gives strength and comfort. Confession, also called the sacrament of Reconciliation or Penance, is a way in which Christ heals our souls of the wounds caused by sin. God forgives any time we pray for mercy – for instance, our venial sins are forgiven through the Fr. Gary’s article continues on page 3...

Queridos amigos de Sta. Luisa:

Penitential Act at the beginning of Mass. However, Catholics are required to confess to a priest their mortal sins, those sins that are so grave that they separate us from God, others, and our-selves and put us in danger of losing the gift of salvation. Both Anointing of the Sick and Confession heal and restore us. Next week I will complete the discussion on the sacraments with the two Sacraments of Service. May the gifts of the Holy Spirit fill your heart! Fr. Gary Zender

Wear Red to Mass Next Weekend to Celebrate Pentecost MAY 22-23

Pentecost is the feast day when we commemorate the Holy Spirit's coming over the disciples in the upper room, empowering the community of believers to continue God's work and share God's unifying love.

Our Easter celebration comes to a resounding conclusion on this day, the 50th day of Easter. Its red vesture, the color of the Holy Spirit, recalls among other things the flame of the Spirit that burns in the hearts of the baptized, as well as the color of spring's first fruits and flowers.

You are encouraged to dress up for Mass on Pentecost (May 22/23) in your brightest red and orange apparel, to celebrate the Holy Spirit in our lives and in our Church.
