How it Works Solar panels turn sunlight

directly into DC electricity

A device called an inverter turns the DC electricity into AC electricity which the appliances in the house use

How it Works cont.

The inverter is wired into the electrical service panel or load side of a meter.

So, during the day when the sun is shining the system is producing electricity, and whatever is running in the building is being powered by the solar system.

How it Works cont.

The property is still connected to the electrical grid, so there is no need for any storage of electricity.

What Makes a property Qualified? South-ish facing roof for pitched roofs

Flat open roof space

Minimal obstructions facing south (trees, other buildings)

If no south facing roof – an open area of land with an open southern window

How fast are rates climbing?

May 2014“Connecticut Light & Power said Thursday its electricity generation prices are going up more than 8 percent for the second half of the year, while United Illuminating said its rates would drop 3.7 percent in July.

The default rate from Connecticut Light & Power, a division of Northeast Utilities, on July 1 will increase to 9.990 cents per kilowatt hour, from their current 9.235 per kilowatt hour.”

- May 15, 2014|By BRIAN DOWLING, [email protected], The Hartford Courant

CL&P - November 2014CL&P’s standard residential generation rate will increase from 9.990 cents per kWh to 12.629 cents/kwh starting Jan 1 2015.

That’s a 20% increase from the new rate imposed in may!

That’s 26% greater than the baseline before the May increase!
