In conventional power plants the heat generated during theproduction of electrical energy is led into the environment viacooling towers. Less than 40% of the energy input reachesthe consumer as electricity while more than 60% is lost aswaste heat. Our core idea is to not waste the heat cogener -ated as part of the power production but to make the bestpossible use of it.
Since 1977 we develop and work with efficient heat andpower generation technologies. Based on this experience wehave developed compact Combined Heat and Power gener-ation (short: CHP) units which use the principle of cogener-ation to produce electrical and thermal energy where alsothe heat can be used. This decentralized energy solution hasthe advantage of cutting the transportation losses from theenergy equation and can therefore offer overall efficiencyrates of above 90%.
In contrast to the conventional energy supply CHP units pow- e red with natural gas reduce the primary energy consump-tion by over 30% and the CO2 emission by up to 60%.
Emission reduction of natural gas powered CHP unitscompared to conventional power and heat generation
Due to their ecological benefits CHP units are publicly suppor-ted in Germany and other countries. Their ability to be turnedon and off or run in partial load within a matter of seconds(which common power plants are not capable of ) makes themthe perfect counterpart to the increasing number of fluctu-ating renewable energy sources. In order to achieve this, CHP units can be merged into virtual power plants which canprovide balancing power in the range of several megawatts.
With their compact construction our CHP units use the short -est possible way to turn engine power and combustion heatinto electrical energy and useable heat. The space require-ments as well as the expenditures for inserting the CHP areminimized. Due to an advanced vibration decoupling systema separate foundation is mostly not necessary. All units aredelivered with a sound absorbing case making sure that theunit can operate in sound sensitive objects such as hospitals, schools or even housing buildings.

SOKRATHERM compact CHP unitcompact, efficient, reliable
Core piece of the CHP unitis a gas engine whichpowers an alternator. Thecooling water and exhaustheat are extrac t e d with asystem of heat exchangersand transferred to heatingwater. Engine, alternatorand base frame are mount -ed with multiple vibrationdampeners, the casingwith integrated switchgearis fully sound-insulated.
This functional draft shows one of the many options for the hydraulicintegration. The unit’s controls can be adapted to the present heatingscheme. The electric integration is usually performed parallel to themains.

The combination of multi-ple CHP units allows anenergy supply in the pow errange of Megawatts.

Special solutions
Our CHP units can also be fitted for emergency power oper -ation and – with additional equipment and a special config u -ration – heat up thermal oil, generate steam for productionprocesses or supply a chilling process such as air conditioni ngsystems.
We deliver CHP units in various power classes for operationwith natural gas, bio-methane, biogas or sewage gas inthe range of 50 and 500 kW electrical power. This way we canprovide tailored solutions for a broad span of applicationssuch as swimming pools, hospitals, nursing homes, schoolsas well as housing and industrial sites.
Our compact CHP units are characterised by being delivered ready to connect needing especially little space making the best possible use of the fuel operating very safely, silently and with low emissions
Multiple unit plants
When facing high energy demands, several CHP units can becombined in size and number to match the heat and/or powerrequirement of the object exactly. By splitting the requiredamount of power onto several units the security of energysupply is improved because if one CHP is idle due to servicingthe other units can keep operating.
Several CHP units can be combined with our individuallydesigned master control MaxiManager and regulated incombination with additional boilers and buffer managementsystems.

CHP sizing by heat demand
To achieve the best economic result with high utilization rat esCHP units are mostly dimensioned according to the heatdemand base load. This enables the unit to cover the majorpart of the energy demand. Electrical load peaks are coveredby the mains and on especially cold days a peak load boilercan help to cover the demand for thermal energy. To find outthe matching CHP size, the maximum heat demand (Q max )is often used.
Depending on the climate zone and the prices for gas andelectricity, a profitable CHP operation can be achieved whenthe CHP unit’s thermal power is in the range of 10 to 30% of Q max . In exceptional cases e.g. to cover electrical loadpeaks or provide emergency power the CHP unit is dimen-sioned according to the maximum power demand. CHP control
Every SOKRATHERM CHP unit comes equipped with an indus -trial PC control unit which not only monitors the fully auto-matic operation but can also adjust the CHP into partialload operation according to the current energy demand. Thesystems developed by us can control any number of CHPunits including boilers and heat storages for best operation.
Our newly developed, web-based remote control and moni-toring system enables the whole CHP unit to be controlledfrom a desktop PC, notebook or even a smartphone. A varie tyof interfaces can provide connections to other systems –from building management systems up to the integration intovirtual power plants and providing balancing energy.

SOKRATHERM customer carecompetence for your CHP project
The professional customer care provides for aneconomic and eco-friendly operation of theCHP unit. We not only build CHP units, we alsohelp to find and train competent partners for servicing.
At SOKRATHERM, customer care means: Full commitment toyour satisfaction. Our aim is not only to build excellent CHPunits but to cooperate with the customer to achieve the bestprofitability, lifetime and operation reliability of the CHPproject.
This is why our customers are comprehensively supportedright from the beginning. Our sales engineers analyze theenergy demand of the object, make first drafts of profitabilitycalculations and proposals for integrating the CHP unit inexisting systems – tailored to suit the building, the plannedutilization as well as the technical and economic conditions. For every requirement we seek the best solution – and find it.
Our CHP units are delivered ready to be connected and can beset up very quickly. The complete implementation of the CHPproject including commissioning on site and test operationis accompanied by our project engineers. With the Remote-Manager our engineers have full access to historic and real-time operation data and will help you with all issues concern -ing the CHP unit.
SOKRATHERM CHP control systems guarantee an economic, efficient and secure operation of a single CHP unit as well as heating centers withmultiple CHP units. Alone or combined with otherheating systems (e.g. building managementsystems) they create more transparency, fasterreaction options and predictable savings.

SOKRATHERM servicing quick and professional
Professional service is an important success factor for CHPprojects. SOKRATHERM works with a network of internationalpartner companies and can assist CHP operators in findingqualified service partners or train service staff locally. Ouronline servicing system transfers all of the data directly tothe RemoteManager. Our service center can access the datadirectly and support the staff on sites around the world e.g. in Chile or Russia effectively.
Only reliable parts from well-known manufacturers are usedfor our CHP units. This guarantees a very low fa ult liability. If repair measures become inevitable this also ensures thatour spare part supply works quickly and uncomplicated.
Plant Nordhausen: Built in 1996, enlarged in 2008 and 2012. Production, warehouse, service center and technical offices are situated in 3,500 m2.
We have an ISO 9001 quality management system which isregularly audited by the TÜV. This ensures a continuousprocess of improving our product quality and securing ourcustomers' satisfaction.
After the final assembly and adaption of our CHP unitsaccording to the specific customer requirements an extensivetest bench run is perfomed and followed by a first servicing.
The clear focus on quality in our product and service hasprovided SOKRATHERM with an excellent position: Withnumerous awards and over 1300 CHP units delivered world-wide we are one of the leading CHP manufacturers in ourpower class.
