Transcript of Soil and Food Security
Food security is one of the great global challenges of the 21st century
That will require solutions on the time scale of only a few decades
The global population grew to seven billion in 2011
and It is expected to reach over nine
billion by 2050.
However, The resources to feed this growing
population are limited
In 1960, one hectare of land
produced enough food to feed two people;
By 2050, the same amount of
land will need to feed more than six people
How it is possible to meet this growing food demand ?
Should people eat less food ??????r
Should people fight for hunger???

What does “food security” mean?
Food security is a situation that exists when all people, at all times, have sufficient, safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and
healthy life.
we want to shed a little light on how SOIL is waging war against hunger – not by collecting canned goods or distributing mealsBut by making it possible for people to grow more food
War against hunger
Seven key soil qualities important for crop production , namely: nutrient availability nutrient retention capacity oxygen availability to roots, rooting conditions excess salts toxicities and Workability
Which provided by only healthy soil.
Key qualities of soil for crop production
RUNNING OUT OF USABLE TOPSOIL
A rough calculation of current rates of soil erosion and degradation suggests that we have only about 60 remaining years of topsoil
40% of the world's agricultural soil is now classified as either degraded or seriously degraded.
70% of the topsoil, the layer keeping seven key soil qualities that allows crops to grow, is gone
How Is Soil Running Out?Farmland is being lost at an
accelerating rate due to erosion, desertification, salinisation, and desertification.
Soil erosion as big problem as global warming, say scientists
Each year more than 10m hectares of crop land are degraded or lost by erosion, though more than 99% of the world's food comes from the soil
How Is Soil Running Out?Soil erosion threatens to leave Earth hungry
Food security may depend critically on finite sources of nutrients which are expected to run short in the mid-century as world demand for food explodes.
Central to this problems is excessive nutrient mining
How Is Soil Running Out?A significant problem is human misuse of the soil which has led to pollution or contamination.
Most of these problems relate to increased industrialization where much pollution going unchecked, leading to severe land degradation.
Misuse of soil in this way threatens the ability of soils to meet reasonable safety standards and has jeopardized food production.

Why haven’t we heard more about Soil?
Probably the living soil isn’t that sexy
Even people don’t think about how soil connected with so many other things: Including health, environment, climate, water and most importantly with food security.
Soil will be unproductive and will produce 30% less food over the next 20-50 years when require to grow 50% more food.
Water will reach a crisis point. This issue is already causing conflicts in Asia and the next wars are likely to be fought over unsustainable irrigation.
As a consequence, World will be more food insecure
What happens if this isn’t addressed?
7 SINS OF HUMANITY -GANDHI
1. Wealth without work2. Pleasure without conscience3. Knowledge without character4. Commerce without morality5. Politics without principle6. Religion without sacrifice7. Science without humanity
To meet growing food demand, high-yielding crops variety are being grown which can survive on degraded soil, with the help of artificial fertilizer containing macronutrient.
But it’s surprising that 60% of the world’s population is deficient in vitamins and minerals feeding this crops food.
High yielding crops not only affect the nutritional quality of food, but soil ecosystems also may be less able to provide ecosystem services vital to food security.
Genetically modified crops and food products pose a threat to human health, resistance to disease, soil, and the global food supply
On the other hand, genetically engineered crops seriously disrupt soil ecology by reducing microbial diversity, which decreases soil fertility over time—possibly irreversibly
8. Technology without wisdom9. Education without relevance10. Humanity without conscience
SINS OF HUMANITY CONTINUED….
Soil and Crops are Like a Mother and her child
If a Soil (Like Mother) give so many crops (children) and do not get any management(care) ,Soil (mother) will be lost of nutrient and degraded (sick)
At the same time, she will lose her capacity to give birth as Soil loss its fertility
Fertile soil doesn't fall from the sky ,so it needs management
Soil Versus Crops
People will be relying on the soil to provide food and ultimately for their survival. This means that we need to look after our soils to ensure that they can support this growing population.
NOT TAKING SOILS FOR GRANTED If soils are not restored, crops will fail even if rains do not;
Hunger will perpetuate even with emphasis on biotechnology and genetically modified crops;
Civil strife and political instability will plague the developing world even with sermons on human rights and democratic ideals
NOT TAKING SOILS FOR GRANTED
Humanity will suffer even with great scientific strides.
Political stability and global peace are threatened because of soil degradation, food insecurity, and desperateness.
The time to act is now.
The soil is the great connector of our lives, the source, and destination of it all
I have a dream that one day we will live in a world where progress will not be judged by the production yields, but by the color and Carbon content of the soils
