Visited by a Boar.

A lear story comes down fromthe Kelly camp, or, rather, C. T.Brown brought it down. Mr.Brown says that the night shiftat the Germany mine are re-

sponsible for it. According tothe statements of the membersof the shift, they heard something prowling about the mouthof the shaft one night recently, and, on coming out to see whatthe intruder might be, were nota little astonished to see a year-ling bear sitting not far awaylicking his chops as though hehad just devoured somethingthat he relished very much orwere preparing to do so. Themembers of the shift had nofirearms with them so theyresorted to bombarding his bear- -ship with rocks and yells, towhich he paid not the slightestattention. When a stick ofgiant powder was exploded inhis immediate vicinity, however, the intruder stampeded over therocks .and through the brushwith a rattling and crashingthat resembled that of a minature avalanche. And furtherdesponent sayetli not.

Attorney W. A. FlemingJones of Las Cruces, who hasbeen east for several weeks on atrip combining business andpleasure, called on DelegateAndrews and Attorney W. B.Childers at the Shorehain hotelin Washington Thursday.

SARINANA WAS ACQUITTED

Not Evidence Enough to ConvictHim of Having; Committed with

Deadly Weapon.

Manuel Seriñana, employedfor some time as editorial writeron the staff of El Defensor nielPueblo of this city, was tried inthe district court the first of theweek on a charge of assault witha deadly weapon. Testimonyintroduced by the prosecutionwent to show that Sariñana entered Biavischi's saloon in adrunken condition, called for aglass of liecr, and when reminded that the price was tencents instead of five becameabusive, following the bar-tender about the room evidentlyseeking trouble; also that abystander noticed that he hadan open pocket knife in hishand and partly up his sleeve.siezed his arm, took away theknife, and handed it to the citvmarshal. Messrs. Doughertyand Fitch, attorneys for the de- -'

fense, undertook to show thateven if Sariflana had a knife asalleged his conduct did notwarrant his conviction on acharge of assault with a deadlyweapon. The jury returned averdict of not guilty.

RICHARDS-HOCKET- T WEDDING

To Bo Celebrated in San Marcial onthe Twenty-sixt- h Day

of June.

Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Ilockettof San Marcial are sending outinvitations to the marriage oftheir daughter Salina to Hoi.Harvey M. Richards. The bride- -elect is a charming daughter inan excellent family. The groomis a business man of good stand-ing in San Marcial who repre-sented the council district composed of the counties of Socorroand Sierra in the legislativeassembly last winter with greatcredit to himself, his district, andhis party. The wedding will beone of the most prominent celebrated in Socorro county in recent years, and the contractingparties will , receive the con-gratulations and good wishes ofa very large circle of friends andacquaintances.

ANOTHER RICH STRIKE

A Twelve-Fo- ot Vein of Zinc LoadSulphide in Tunnol on tho

Mistlotoo Oroup.

Another rich strike has Iwenadded to the numler made in theMagdalena district. On theMistletoe group, in a tunnel,1,170 feet from the portal, twelvefeet of zinc-lea- d sulphide hasljcen opened up. The ore iscube galena and rosin blend verycoarsely chrystalline and constitutes an idle jigging proposition. The Mistletoe group islocated on the south side of Chi-

huahua gulch nearly a milesouth of the Kelly mine, and thestrike demonstrates the fact thatthe ore belt is extending into thesouthern part of the district. The property is owned by Wm.F. Gordon and St. Louis capi-talists.

"A Good Old Age."

The morning subject is howto enjoy old age. "Cast nw notolí in time of old age. For-sake me not." Study Job andhis intercessions for his children, and Timothy's grandmotherLois.

At 8 p. m., "Of such is thekingdom of Heaven." How oldmust a child be to be saved.Illustrations of impressions asearly as two years old. "Heav-en lies alout us in our infancy."Wecan raise more Christians byjuvinile christian culture thanby adult conversion, a thousandto one." Said a little girl in acrowded meeting, only 'f yearsold. "The more I think of Je-

sus, the uiore I love him." Andher face was radiant with joy.

THE RIVER ON A RAMPAGE

San Antonio and Vicinity Have Suf-fered Some Loss and Are

Threatened With Mora

The Rio Grande del Norte isin an ugly mood down at SanAntonio and vicinity. Accord-ing to reports I rom down there, the little settlement of Guadala-jara has been practically ruined, likewise many wheat and alfalfafields, and a force of men washard at work yesterday on adyke to protect the new town ofSan Antonio. Reports from upthe river indicate little, if any, further rise, and it is to le hoped that San Antonio and vicinitywill suffer no further loss.

Court House Improvements.Improvements continue to le

the order of the day at the courthouse. Workmen are now en-

gaged in painting the outsidewoodwork and will soon !eginthe painting of the walls andnew steel ceilings of the courtroom. The improvements thathave lx-e-n made and those stillin prospect were absolutely nec-

essary to put the court house insuch a condition that it wouldbe a credit to the county, andthe county commissioners are tole commended for the steps thevhave taken in the matter.

District Attorney and Mrs. II.A. Wolford left for their homeat IIillsloro yesterday morning.Mr. Wolford went home feelingconsiderably discouraged overthe result of his efforts to bringSocorro county's violators of thelaw to justice, but he hopes thatcircumstances will le such as tohelp hiin to secure better resultsat the next term of court.

JUDGE ARRAIGNS JURY

Hon, Frank W. Parker Tells JuryThat Acquitted Ramirez The?

Aro Disgrace to County.

NOISY SPECTATORS ARE JAILED

Threw Thoir Hats to the Ceiling; andChoernd Whon The Vordict Was

Announced.

What was doubtless one of themost remarkable occurrencesever witnessed in a court rinuilin Socorro county, took placeWednesday aftirrmon when thejury empaneled to try RumaldoRamirez for the killing of Man-uel Valenzuela brought in theirverdict of not guilty.

In the first place, to the layman who has no proer appre-ciation of the "quibbles andquiddits" of law which are some- -

times made use of to save acriminal from deserved punishment, the case eomed a clearone against the defendant. Thetestimony introduced showedthat for some affront, real orfancied, the defendant went tohis home for his gun, salliedforth in search of his victim, lavin wait for him, ami shot himdown on sight. The defense entered a plea of self-defens- e.' Thecourt instructed for either murder in the firt degree or acquittal. 1 he jury was at lirst uUmtevenly divided, but after delib-erating an hour and a halfagreed upon a verdict of notguilty. No sooner was the ver-dict announced than there weredemonstrations of approval intwo or three parts of the courtroom, three or four men going sofar as to throw up their hats.Hon. Frank W. Parker, the pre-siding judge, promptly orderedthe arrest of the otTenders andsent two of them to jail fortedays for contempt of rt.

Judge Parker then proceededto arraign the jurors very severelyfor their verdict. He told themthat by their verdict they ' liaddisgraced themselves and - dis-graced the county, and thatthey had opened the way forany man to take the law intohis own hands, go in search ofthe man who had offended iim,and shoot him down at sight. The arraignment was doubtlessone of the severest ever heard ina court room. Some of the jur-ors now defend themselves bysaying that !cfore they qualifiedthey announced in open courtthat they were absolutely op-posed to capital punishment andcould not, therefore, find a , ver-dict of guilty of murder in "thefirst degree. The circumstancesconnected with the trial of thecase were remarkable from beginning to end. I

FURIOUS STORM IN EL PASO

Severest Storm of Its Kind on Rec-ord in tho Pass City, Says the

Herald.

The storm of rain and windthat visited Socorro Wednesdayevening was of far greater inten-sity at El Paso. Speaking ofthe storm, the Herald says:

"An electrical storm of greatintensity, accompanied by windreaching nearly cyclonic velocityand a rainfall of nearly a halfinch, broke over El Paso at 7:30o'clock last night and raged lortwo hours. It was the severeststorm of its kind on record inthis city and it is remarkablethat serious damage was notdone.

"Thunderbolt after thunder-bolt occurred and at one time thewind reached a velocity of 52miles an hour. The total rain-fall as recorded at the weatherbureau was 0.48 of an inch. The rain,, with more or less hail, came down in torrents for a fewminutes."

The Herald then devotes twocolumns to a description of thedamage suffered by electric light, telephone, and street car com-panies.

Mrs. C. T. Brown and sons! expect to leave Monday morningJ to visit the Jamestown ei posi-

tion and other points of interest' in the east including the city of' Washington.

OFFICIAL PAPER OF SOCORRO COUHTT.

SATURDAY, JUNE 22, 1W7.

At the present writing it ap-

pears altogether probable thaithe term of district court for So-

corro county now in progresswill close by the end of the week. The term has liecn a very satis-

factory one. In fact, JudgeFrank W. Parker and his effic-

ient corps of court officials archeartily to le congratulated overthe exH'ditious, businesslikemanner in which they have dis-

posed of all matters that havecalled for their consideration.

"Acting Gov. Kavnoi.ds lastThursday commuted ths sentenceof death against Valentina Mad-

rid and Alma Lyons, at Socorro,to have lieen executed tomorrow,to imprisonment for life," saysthe Koswell Register-Tribun- e.

The Register-Tribun- e may meanwell, but really Socorro cravesno further distinction than shehas already won because of thecriminals within her gates.Ilillsborro should make haste toclaim her own.

It now appears that the pres-ident's policy in regard to thepublic lands will be endorsed bythe public lands convention insession in Denver. The presi-

dent's policy is, in brief, to preserve what remains of the publictimber lands, mineral lands, andgrazing and agricultural landsfrom the hands of private cor-ixratio-

There seems to beabsolutely no reason why thispolicy should not commend its'elf to everybody except to thosewho wish to manipulate the pul- -

lic domain with an eye single totheir own selfish purposes.

Captain Ci-kk- y sailed torhome last Sunday. On his arrival in ían v rancisco on orabout July seventh, he will atonce proceed to Oyster Uay for aconsultation witli the president.Ten days later he will arrive inSanta Fe and inaugurate a poli-

cy that will immediately convince the democrats of the utterhopelessness of any further ef-

forts on their part to gain polit-ical advantage by means of in-

trigue with a few disgruntledrepublicans. That unholy alli-

ance may then take itschoice between the spanking ma-

chine and the handcuffs, chain, and staple and seventeen days onbread and water.

Doks the Santa Ke New Mex-

ican really mean to intimatethat the late boy governor, thepatron saint of fake reformersand democrats, was guilty ofany of the official peculationsthat he so roundly railed againstin others? Says the New Mex-

ican: "Mayle those vouchersfor contingent exenses of theexecutive office under the recentfake reform Governor were bum-am- i

niaylx: they were not. May-

be an expenditure of several hun-dred dollars for a reception at theexecutive residence was a legi-timate contingent expense andmaybe it was not. These iues-tion- s

may be answered in duecourse of time and again theymay not."

Mayok Sciimitz of San Fran-cisco was an obscure man leforchis election to the office in whichhe has won so unenviable a dis-

tinction. I lis predecessors inoffice had indulged in a perfectorgie of corruption, and the la-

boring men of the city asked hiselection to show the world thatone of their class could resist thewiles of the devil to which men

of other classes had yielded soreadily. During the f.rst yearof Mayor Schtr.itz's career thereseemed to be good reason to hopethat the laboring men's conten-tion for him was well foundedand that the cause of organizedlabor would be strengthenedmightily by his official conduct. But, with sorrow be it said, thehope was not to be realized.Mayor Schmitz fell before thewiles and seductions of the bood-ler- s

and grafters, and in his fallthe cause of organized labor re-

ceived a blow from which itwill take it years to recover."That 'tis true 'tis pity, andpity 'tis 'tis true."

And so the Ilagerman claq-ueurs consider the Trelford inves-tigation a roaring farce, do they? That is not to be woodered atwhen the Ilagerman method ofprocedure is considered. If Act-ing Governor Raynolds had chos-en to follow the precedent estab-lished by a certain ex- - governor,he would have demanded Trel- -

ford's resignation summarily, lie would then have imported so- -

called experts from Colorado orsome other foreign country to in-

vestigate Trelford's official conduct and would have set them towork with careful instructionsas to what their findings shouldbe. He would have tleniedTrelford any hearing whateverat this investigation. Trelfordwould not have been served witha copy of the experts' report, but that report would have beengiven to some political organ un-

friendly to him for publicationjust at the time best suited toruin him politically if he hadany political standing whatever.Such procedure would have beenaccording to precedent. ActingGovernor Raynolds, however, didnot choose to follow such a precedent. He heard that Trelford had been guilty of punishing convicts in a manner so inhuman and brutal that punish-ment by means of the now fam-

ous spanking machine was onlychild's play in comparison. Theacting governor instituted an investigation under the directionof Attorney General PrichardThe evidence already adduced isenough to establish the fact thatTrelford is guilty as charged. The only defense thus far offered is the bald assertion that theinvestigation is a farce. In fact,no other defense seems possible.

And H Wm Mot Oerman. One of our third grade teach

ers noticed a little fellow theother day during a penmanshiplesson who was evidently absorbed in his work and putting hiswhole soul into his efforts tomake his results look like theteacher's copy upon the black-board.

Thinking such devotion worthyof special reward she passed upthe aisle to give him an encour-aging pat upon the head and theregulation smile of approval. As she drew near she noticedthat his lips were moving, andthat with the completion of eachletter he compared it with hiscopy and muttered audibly,

fiction, has once more been demonstrated in the little town ofFedora, Tenn., the Rresidence ofC. V. Pepper. He writes: "Iwas in bed, entirely disabledwith hemorrhages of the lungsand throat. Doctors failed tohelp me, and all hope had fledwhen I began taking Dr. King'sNew Discovery. Then instantrelief came. The coughing soonceased, the bleedirg diminishedrapidly, and in three weeks I wasable to go to work." Guaranteedfor coughs and colds. 50c. and$1.00, at the Socorro Drug andSupply Co. Trial bottle free.

The Truth About Starving.Novelists write a lot of non

sense about the extreme sufferingthat accompanies starvation. Itis all poppy-coc- k, says DillonWallace in the Outint? Magazine.Anv healthy person, with a nomal appetite, after missing twoor three meals is as hungry ashe ever gets. After awhile thereis a sense of weakness thatgrows on one, and this increaseswith the days. Then therecomes a desire for a great dealof sleep, a sort of lassitude thatis not unpleasant, and this desirebecomes more pronounced as theweakness grows. The end isalways in sleep.

Tetter Cured.A lady customer of ours had

Children and Dogs.

The child who is taught tolove animals and to have a dogas a companion is introduced toa friend of the truest and bestkind the kind of friendship thatlasts. Have you never haddog? Then you don't knowwhat pleasure can be had in hiscompanionship in rambles, in hisquiet presence in vour room, hisunobtrusiveness when humancompany would lore vou; ;

"chum" who always adapts himsell to your mood when manorwoman would jar upon vou. Byall means cultivate in children a

love of animals, especially o"man's best friend," the dog.

He Fired the Stick."I have fired the walking

Chinese nótela. The hotels arc usually group

ed within a square or two of oneanother. Each one seeks to at-

tract guests bv high soundingtitles. For example, in Cantonare hotels which flaunt the signsof the Fortunate Star, the Gol-

den Profits (an unusually frankconfession for a landlord tomake) the Rank Conferring andthe Happiness. The food is notso baa, but the traveler whogoes to one of these houses tosleep will wish that he had goneto another. The ledrooms aresmall, thin walled Injxesin whichyou may hear the breathing ofyour next ncigh1or or ! keptawake half the night by the con-

versation of people at the otherend of the hall or, worse still.be almost stifled by the smokefrom an opium pipe which is being indulged m by the manacross the passageway.

The Voice of the People.Bob Toombs of Georgia was

massive in frame and a giant inintellect. A back country papercriticised a bill he was puttingthrough the legislature. "Thissheet, roared, flourishing italoft at a public meeting in Marletta," is al)out the size of a boy'sshirt tail and is called Vox Pop-u- li
