BOARD OF EDUCATION

The New Board Held Its FirstMeeting Monday Evening and

Effected Organization

$1,000 IS NOW IN THE TREASURY

And There Are Proepecte That theNext Year'a Term Will Be a

Long One.

Socorro's outgoing board ofeducation held its final meetingMonday evening, made its finalreport, and turned all matterslertaining to the conduct of thecity schools over to the newl)oard. The final report of thefinance committee was of specialinterest, a it showed about$1,000 in the treasury. This, after a nine months term ofschool, the first in twelve years,is a remarkably good showing. It speaks well for last year andalso promises well for next year.

The new board effected its or-ganization by the election ofJohn E. Griffith for presidentand A. A. Sedillo for vice-preside-

Conrado A. Baca andJohn W. Terry were candidatesfor the position of clerk of theloard, but no election was effect-ed. Several ballots wre takenand each time the vote stoodlour to four for each of the can-didates. Mr. Baca will serveuntil his successor is elected andqualified.

President Griffith then ap-pointed the usual committees asfollows:

On F inance Aniceto C. Abey-ti- a,

Nepomuceno Lopez, and P. J.Savage.

On Buildings and GroundsR. Stackpole, J. H. Hilton, andAniceto C. Abeytia.' On Teachers and EmployesA. A. Sedillo, Martin Gallegos, and P. J. Savage.

Socorro's present board of edu-cation is a good one and if noserious mistakes are made thereis no reason why the city shouldnot be favored with good schoolsanother year.

AN EARTHQUAKE EXPERIENCE.

Recent Viaitora in Socorro Tall ofTheir Thrilling Experience in

San Francisco.Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Towers

of Toledo, who spent a part ofthe winter in Socorro, were guestson the ninth floor of the St.Francis hotel in San Franciscoon the terrible morning of AprilIS. The following is taken fromMrs. Towers' account of theirexperience as related to a repre-sentative of the Toledo Blade:

"The papers have not madethe scene nearly as awful as itis," said Mrs. Towers. "I havegiven up trying to describe thescene or the sensations which I

felt that morning."We were sound asleep when

the shock came and as soon aswe realized what was happeningwe jumped out of bed and beganto dress. I pulled on a dressover my night gown and wewould have hurried right down-stairs if it had not been for aninvalid auntie whom we hadwith us from Buffalo.

"We got her up and dressedher and though she bad not beenable to walk downstairs exceptone step at a time for years, shewalked down those nine flightsof stairs almost as good as Icould.

"As soon as we got into thestreet we went to Golden Gatepark where we secured rooms ina small apartment house at $17per day. The rooms ordinarilyrented at $35 a month.

"There were seven in our par-ty and we secured a lot of crack-ers and oranges as soon as wereached the park the second time. Most people had not thought ofeating yet, so we obtained agood supply ahead at a nominalprice. There was no water, however, and we did not washfor two days.

Miss Theta Jones, daughter ofProf, and Mrs. F. A. Jones, leftlast night for Kansas City tospend her summer vacation. She will attend the commence-ment exercises of the MissouriSchool of Mines at Rolla, Mo.,in June, returning to her home

Attorney John E. Griffith ofthis city visited Sante Fe Thurs-day on professional business andwhile there granted the NewMexican an interview fromwhich the Chieftain is pleased toquote as follows:

"John E. Griffith, of Socorro, member of the law firm ofDougherty and Griffith, arrivedat noon today and attended tolegal business while here. Mr.Griffith states that the town ofSocorro is slowly but steadilyimproving. Several new busi-ness buildings and residenceswill be erected this season andsome paving of sidewalks will bedone. Several streets will bewidened and straightened and anumber of property sales havebeen made. New people are ar-riving and upon the whole he isvery well satisfied with the out-look.

"Upon having put to him thesoft impeachment of being a can-didate for the vacancy whichnow exists in the office of districtattorney for the counties of Socorro and Sierra, Mr. Griffithsaid that he was not in any sensea candidate and were the posi-tion to be tendered him, he wouldbe constrained to decline it. al-

though appreciating the compliment. Mr. Griffith intimatedstrongly that the law firm ofDougherty & Griffith is doing afine business and that he has allhe can do to attend to that, as itpromises a much better return tohis partner and to himself thanwould the office of Dtttrict At-torney. He has been an officeholder before, having served forseveral years with credit andability in the office of Clerk ofthe Fifth Judicial District Court. He has also had more or less ex-

perience in official life beforecoming to New Mexico. He sug-gested that his experience wasthatJhere was more money in agood and ed lawpractice than in official life, how-ever, he holds one office of whichhe is proud and to which he givesmuch time and attention, al-

though there is nothing but gloryin it, and that he is president ofthe town Board of Education ofSocorro. He is a strong friendof the public schools and when-ever he can do anything to theirinterests and of the persons ofthe school age he is always will-ing and ready to attend,"

Sad Conditiona in Turkey.A traveler wdio has investigat-

ed conditions in Macedonia re-

marks: "The Turkish soldier, under decent control, would actwith something like humanity, but the Turkish governmentbeing what it is, the ragged andunpaid troops are driven to rob-

bery and murder, and learnthrough their own wretchedness,to behave generally like wildbeasts. All the wealth of thecountry goes to keep up thesplendor of the court and of theluxurious army of the sultan'sdaughters, while the army is inrags. I saw hundreds of the soldiers without boots, having onlyleather tied round their feet withstrings."

Early English Football. The American game, however,

can hardly Ik more violent thanwas the name as originally played in England, if we may judgefrom the denunciation of its enemies. According to Sir ThomasIClyot. baronet of the time of theTudors, the game consisted of"nothing but beastlie furic andextreme violence," while Stubbes, the puritan, describes it as a"bloody and tuurthering prac-tice" and a "devilish businessaltogether." Kelly, N. M., May 5, VH)h.

Editor Chieftain:It Incomes the sad duty of

your correspondent to record thedeath of Simeon Exter of Kelly, who passed away at 2 o'clock p.m. yesterday from diabetes. Mr.Exter, until two months ago, at-

tended to his duties as foremanfor the Tri-Bulli- Co. on theKelly mine. About that time hefelt the first symptoms of thedread disease and took a lay oil.hoping to regain his health andstrength. For this purpose heand Mrs. Exter went to the fam-

ous l'alomas hot springs wherethey remained a month. Mr.Exter continued to lose flesh andstrength and came home puttinghis case in the hands of Dr. Ed-win Swisher who at that timehad great hopes of curing him.But it was not to be. Aftermedical skill and the kind officesof loving ones had done all thatmortals could do. the noble spiritof Sim eon Exter was liberated, leaving the lody in eternal sleep.

Mr. Exter was born in Corn-wa- l,

England, 44 years ago. When 20 years old he marriedMary Elizabeth James. Afterburying their first born in Eng-land, they came to the UnitedStates. After one year in Mich-igan the Exters came to Kelly, where they have made their per-

manent home ever since. Twochildren are buried herein Kellv.Mrs. Exter and three childrensurvive to mourn the loss of akind husband and loving father. The children are Simeon, Jr.,aged 17. Mary Elizabeth, 1.,and Albert James, 14.

Simeon Exter joined the M. E.Church South 10 years ago, andand since that time has lived asdevout and sincere a christianlife as it is possible for man to i

live, and the last pathetic scenesof his cheerful life and his peace-ful death bear witness of thefaith, the love and the couragethat death could not conquer. He "was an honored member ofthe K. of I. Lodge, which orderwill have charge of the funeralat 3 o'clock p. in. today. Mr.Exter leaves a host of friendswho will long remember him asa faithful friend and uprightman. It can 1m- - truly said thatthose who loved him most werethose who knew him lst. Andwith his sorrowing family wejoin in saying the last sad fare-well, farewell.
