That celebrated minority report onNew Mexico, was made up almostentirely ot extracts from a work by oneDavis who was the United States At-torney of the tcritory over thirty yoarsago. A FAVORED LAND.

RICH IN MINKS, LAND ANDCATTLE.

Socorro is one ot the oldest settle-ments in America, no ancient pueblosettlement having been found uponthe site of the present modern city,by the lirat paoitth expedition, whichcoming north traversed the llio(randa Valley. The Spaniards, beingquick to perceive the climatic advant-

ages of the location and the variedwonderful resource) of the surround-

ing country, very won established a

permanent settlement, and the firstAinorican travelers through these re-

gions found Socorro a thriving andprosperous Mexican plaza. Upon theadvent of the railroad during the sum-

mer of 1S80, the town had a populationof 1,200, but since that date the growthhas been steady and rapid, so that to-

day the city, which was incorporated inJanuary, 1882, baa a population of4,o00. The city of Socorro is situatedin the Rio Graodo Valley, on the A.T. & S. F. railroad about one thous-

and miles west of Kansas City, and isalmost the ge graphical center of New

Mexico.Almost immediately after the advent

of tho railroad, rich mineral, chiefly

silver and lead, wuh fliacovered in theSocorro ruouutain, now within the citylimits, and atao in the Magdalenas,Gallinas, Mogollona, Ladrones, Limi-tara, Black Range and other mountainson the west, and in the Sun Andres,Oscuras, Nogal, J carrillos and Man-

zanas on the east. So that the city is

now surrounded by scores of tributarymining districts, containing gold.silver, copper, lead, irou aad maogauese, alsocoal, salt, mica, soda, gypsum, lime, kaolino, sulphur, plumbago, marble,fire-cla- y, and the finest and most dura-ble kind ot building stone, etc. Iron, lead and coal abound in iuexhaustiblequantities in the immediate vicinity of

the city. While being one of the chief com-

mercial points in the Territory, it isbeyond question tho mining and smelt-ing center of the southwest. Capital-ists were quick to see the many advan-tages and make preparations to profitby them. Mr. Gustav Billing, one ofthe most enterprising and successfulsmelting men in tho United States, purchased several mines, principally offluxing ores, and erected a three stacksmelter on the outskirts of the city, theworks being the largest and finest ofthe kind in the southwest, having acapacity of about two hundred tons aday. Mr. Billing gives steady employ-

ment to about 150 men, and offers amarket at the best figures to the minersof this country and Old Mexioo fortheir ores.

Shortly after the completion of therailroad, seeing the uoous-tit- for moreconvenient communication with themining districts of the west, thecoupuuy built a branch from Socorroto Magdalena and Kelly, thirty milesdintant, at the same lime deciding inthe near future to continue it on toArizona.

The Graphic mining and smoltingcompany, under the management ofTliomun A. Halt, one of the shrewdestand most thorough bumneaa men in thewest, employs a large force io its mines

in tha Magdalenas, and the extensivasmelting works, situated in southSocorro, have a capacity of 120 ionsper day and have all the work theycan attend to. Aside from treatingthe orea from the company mines, theinstitution is receiving ores fro in allsections of the southwest. The suc-

cessful establishment of the smelter inconjunction with other mammothworks, hat succeeded in securing thecity in its positioa at the mining andmelting center of the Territory.

A soda water factory, brewery, wagon factory, pottery works, flligrco

jewtlry and cigar Í- -. torus and other

manufacturing ent Mid n i te or inconstant operation, while others are incontemplation and in ouurse of prepar-ation.

A nnmber olejraut snd expensiveresidences and btiHiness houses havtbeen completed during the past year, while a fine system of water-work- s

has lately teen constructed by thecitylThe Hot Springs, three milesabovo the center of the city, afford a sufficient water supplywith fall enough to send astream over the highest building, thusinsuring an adequate supply for do-

mestic and irrigation purposes, as wellas ampio protection Rgainst fire. Asno pumping works are necessary, andthe city owns and controls the entiresystem, the expense is very small, while the water rates are lower thanat any place iu the West.

The eociety of the city is equal tothat of any place in the West,wh!ethe educational, church nud amusementadvantages are excellent. There area convent, an acadoniy, and good pub-li- o

bbí private Rchools; a large num-ber of pupils being in conetant attend-ance. Preparations are now in pro-
