There will also be a blog post each week to go along with the slide show.

Basic Facebook Terms
For those of you who would like clarification of some of the regular terms that you see on Facebook and in other blog posts, articles and books – here are 17 of the most common.
Some of these relate to Profiles, some to Pages and some to both.
You can find more at the Facebook Glossary at http://www.facebook.com/help/glossary.
4
Activity Log
Part of the Admin Panel of a Page – you can find this under the Manage menu. This allows you to allow or disallow posts made by Fans. You can also change the dates or add locations to posts you have made. Click the circle to pop up the menu.
5
Admin
The administrator(s) of a Page. This will be you for Pages you create, but you can also add other Friends as Admins and someone else could add you as an Admin on their Page. The Admins have full access to all the information behind the Page. They can update or change anything at any time. Add new Admins at Manage-Edit Page-Manage Admins.
6
Admin Panel
This appears above the Cover Image when you go to your Page as the Admin. It has several menus for updating and locating information along with quick links to Notifications, Messages, Fans, Insights and Tips.
Applications (Tabs/Apps)
7
These are the 3rd-party programs that users can add to the Profiles or their Pages. They run the gamut from all those games people play with their Profiles to really useful programs that can be used to enhance and expand your Pages. On a Profile, they are listed on the left side of the News Feed. On a Page, they are shown with images underneath the Cover Image. They are also known as Apps (for short) and as Tabs (which comes from the way they were displayed on the original version of Pages).

Badges
These are those boxes that you see on other blogs and websites showing the status updates and other items from the profile or page of the blog writer or site owner. These can also be known as widgets.

Cover Image
This is the large image that appears above the Timeline on both Pages and Profiles. It must be at least 399 pixels wide and the maximum size is 851 pixels wide by 315 pixels tall. You upload this image yourself and it can be something you create or you purchase or you have someone create for you. NOTE – for Cover Images that go on Pages, there are some specific rules that apply.

Fans
These are the users who connect to your business/product Page. These users have clicked the ‘Like’ button shown on your Page to become Fans. Fans are NOT connected to your personal Profile in any way. They can see that you are the Admin, but they can ONLY see the information that you have made public in the Privacy Settings on your Profile.
11
Friend Lists
One way to organize your News Feed. You can create Friend Lists any way you want and it’s a good way to separate close family and friends from business friends or acquaintances. You can then post certain status updates only to specific lists and you can also customize your Privacy Settings based on the lists. The Friend Lists you create will show on the left side of your News Feed and you can click on them individually to only see the posts from Friends on each list.
12
Friends
These are the people you connect with from your personal Profile. A Facebook user has to send a ‘friend request’ to you and ask permission to be your friend – then you have to confirm it before they are allowed access to your Profile information.
13
Like Button
This button now appears right under the Cover Image on your Page. If someone wants to be a Fan of your Page (or you want to be a Fan of theirs), they must click this button. Once someone becomes a Fan, the posts that you make on your Page will appear on their News Feed.
Like Button – this one says ‘Liked’ because I have already clicked the button.
News Feed
What most people think of as the main page of their Facebook Profile. This is what comes up when you log in – where you see all the posts from your Friends and from other Pages that you have ‘liked’. You can organize this in a couple of different ways which can help make it easier to read through if you have a large amount of Friends and Pages that you like. This is probably what you are used to seeing on your Profile.
14
Page
15
This is what you create separately for your business or product. Your Profile is used as the administrator (or Admin) of the page and you are able to post as your page instead of as yourself, but it is a separate entity and all the information you add to the Page is public. When you create a page using the ‘Create Page’ button, you are setting yourself up as the Admin.
Profile
This is your personal Facebook account that is listed under your name. This is what you use to connect with friends and family, post your personal status updates and photos, set your privacy levels and create Friend Lists. When you create an account from the Facebook Home page, you are creating a personal Profile.

Profile Photo
This is the smaller square image that goes along with the Cover Image on the Timelines. It is also the image that’s used when you make a post. For your Profile it will usually be a photo of yourself and for your Page it might be your company logo. The size for this image is 160 pixels square.

The box at the top of your News Feed or your Timeline where you can post an update to your Profile or your Page.

Social Plug-Ins
These are items such as the Like Button or Like Box that you see on other blogs and websites. They are also known as widgets and you can use them on your own blog and website, although you may need some knowledge of web coding.

Tagging (Photos)
Friends who add photos that you are in can tag you in the photo. This appears in their Timelines and News Feeds (not just yours) and in the News Feeds of all their Friends. You can set your Privacy Settings so that you receive a notification when this happens or you can disallow this completely.
20
Timeline
This is the new interface that Facebook has created for Pages and Profiles. The main idea of the Timeline is to create a history of your business (for your Page) or of your life (for your Profile). Posts appear in order by date but go from left to right to left along the vertical timeline in the middle. Posts that have been highlighted go all the way across the timeline on both sides.
21
Wall
Part of your personal Profile. It shows only the posts that you have made and that Friends have posted directly to you – such as birthday messages. When you click on your name at the top of the screen, you see the Wall as your Timeline. To go to someone else’s Wall to make a direct post, click their name anywhere you see it – from your Friends listing or from a post on your News Feed.
22
(This is someone else’s Wall so that’s why I have distorted the names and photos.)
