Social Media 4 Social Change

The Reddit Indoctrination Station

By Nathan J. Perez

#1 “It’s people you want to

focus on relentlessly

understanding”

When designing media for people, we need to understand what they want. Oftentimes, we may get wrapped up in our own ideas, completely ignoring what the people actually would enjoy. In the end, it’s them who we need to satisfy. Without them, we don’t have a market.

#2 “It sounds so simple and basic, but people feel

good when they’re followed back”

Like my last revelation, people are our main focus. One of the most important part is treating them like their people too, instead of just consumers. One of the things about that means connecting and being interested in them. That’s why it’s good to follow them and show interest in who they are, within reason.

#3 “Setting goals for social media success is

vital. As the saying goes, what you don’t

measure you can’t (reliably) improve.”

Like everything, you’re only going to get somewhere if you set goals for yourself. This applies to social media as well, especially at Reddit! In order to get a good Karma score, you’ve got to put effort into your posts and see what gets votes and what doesn’t. Ultimately, you have to work on improving your content!

#4 “Build a community. Seek

out individuals who care about what you

care about.”

Reddit is a website that consists entirely out of communities. These communities, called subreddits, are the lifeblood of the website, and it’s what makes it so amazing. There’s no grand product or focus of the site, so the members are free to express themselves. Whether it be fans of the Giants to knitting enthusiasts, Reddit has a community for that! From r/funny by user OB1FBM

#5 “Social media efforts can make significant impact on customer

service and market research for

organizations”

Reddit is a powerful tool that not a lot of people are aware of. For one thing, the opinions of Redditiors have given countless insights onto the products that many companies ask about on this site. Specific subreddits are designed for this too, such as r/AskReddit or r/IAmA. These are valuable sources of opinions, questions, and ideas!

#6 “Is there such thing as

privacy anymore?”

On websites such as Reddit, you remain for the most part anonymous save for a username that you create. You really don’t need to enter in your personal information. However, the need to enter more and more of your personal info for social media websites is becoming more prevalent. Soon, everything about us will be up in the internet

#7 “Everyone knows the big three networks:

Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Do marketers need to focus on any

other networks?”

This is exactly the point of my Social Media 4 Social Change campaign. I want people to understand just how amazing Reddit is and take advantage of the many communities it has. You can find anything on Reddit and can reach out to likeminded individuals while learning more about your favorite hobbies! Marketers can learn so much from Redditors!

#8 “I believe social media is fulfilling the promise of the early days of the

Internet: creating a connect society.”

Reddit is definitely up there as one of the most influential sites on the internet when is comes to creating a connected society. People can make some rather meaningful connections on this site, from forming up parties for their favorite video games to sharing philosophies and ideologies that they personally develop. Such is the beauty of Reddit!

#9 “So social media isn’t just changing how we

communicate with other people, it’s changing how

we see ourselves in relation to other

people.”

Our presence on the internet is something that we may value just as much as our presence in the outside world. Some people even base themselves on a persona that they develop on the internet, such as popular YouTubers. This is also evident by some prominent Redditors who make huge contributions, but it’s a little less prominent to have famous Redditors.

#10 “Word of mouth is no longer confined to

conversations with friends and families, but is opened up to practically anyone,

anywhere who is interested enough to

listen”

Reddit is a network that is entirely based upon the people who inhabit it. The Redditors make the subreddits, they fill it with meaningful information and discussion, and the community thrives because of it. All of it is done by communication between them, and the sheer scope of this site is absolutely amazing. It shows just how much we can do if we work with each other and listen.
