Phase 1 – Module 1 Where Can I get my IDEA?
At first if you don’t succeed, SURRENDER– Do absorption instead or think something unrelated
Destroy Judgement, Create Curiosity– Suspend your voice of Judgement
Pay attention– Environmental Conditioning
“To be creative, if you talk less and listen more you will do very well.” – Claude Rosenberg, Rosenberg Capital Management
Where Can I get my IDEA? Ask Dumb Questions
– A dumb question is the same way a child is wise. (Such questions have no expectations, assumptions or illusions; they leap over hearsay and convoluted thinking to go straight to the heart of the issue)
– The only dumb question is the question you don’t ask.
Where Can I get my IDEA? Do only what is Easy, Effortless and Enjoyable
– Feed your interest and passion
Don’t think about it too much– Bright and Happy children have one thing in common:
they spent noticeable amounts of time staring peacefully and wordlessly into space.
– Stop worrying
“Why is it I get my best ideas in the morning while I’m showering?” – Albert Einstein
Where Can I get my IDEA?
Eliminate Thought Barriers– Don’t care what others think, for now
Be in the World but not of it
– Don’t only do something different, or do something in a new way, but be something different
– Do something that will outlive you
Phase 1 – Module 2Innovation & Business Models
“There is no inherent value in a technology or idea per se. The value is determined instead by the business model used to bring it to the market through two different businesses models will yield different amounts of value. An inferior technology or idea with a better business model will often trump a better technology commercialized through an inferior business model.”
- “Open Business Models,” Henry Chesbrough; Harvard Business School Press, 2006
Innovation & Business Models Ex. : Ipod’s Multi-Dimensional Innovations.
Technology• Portability & Design (Minimalist & ergonomic)• Hardware/Software (Design & UI)• Value – Patents, IP
Business Model• Legal Music Downloads ~ Value Capture via itunes• Branding - APPLE
Phase 1 – Module 3I have an Idea, What’s next?
-Refine your Idea• Innovate intangibles around it (competitiveness lies in
the intangibles-CRM, CExp)• Validate its need/urgency (Low cost experimentation,
simulation, and the like)
-Product or Service Decisions-Execution-IP Protection (market value, licensing, advantage,
branding, effectiveness, attraction)
Phase 1 – Module 4 Fund your start-up & Bootstrapping
-Financing for Seed and Start up stagesSEED
– Self financed– Friends, Families and FOOLS– Grants– Biz Plan Prize money thru contests
Start Up– Venture Capitalists– Corporate sponsors– Suppliers/Buyers– “Angel” Investors
Bootstrapping -What is Bootstrapping?
It is a collection of methods used to minimize the amount outside debt and equity financing needed from banks and investors
• Leveraging your own personal assets/resources
• The art of resourcefulness and hard work
Bootstrapping
Why Bootstrap?– No choice for Family/Banker/Investors laugh at
you– Low risk way to start and you don’t answer to
anyone– High Level of Freedom– Equity not shared by anyone– Interest rate of loans are up– Forces you to focus (speed, discipline, agility)
On Bootstrapping -Starting Up• Convince, convince, convince 1st client/s• Start small, spend small• Be persistent, be relentless, BE your company -Product/Service Decisions• Product Development vs. Personal / Professional
Services -Be realistic• Cash is King (Long term planning is good but next week
is more important)• Head in the clouds, feet on the ground• Plan for the best case but prepare for the worse case
Fund your start-up & Bootstrapping
Sales is #1– Direct source of Cash– Word of mouth/mouse– Over deliver but don’t over commit– Learn to quote based on nothing
Marketing is #2– Web is the way to go with a shoestring budget– Networking, ex-deals, friends, schools– Organize Seminars, Plug in events or participate in
Trade shows– Talk Big, operate small
Phase 1 – Module 5Selling that IDEA
Business Plan Presentation vs. Elevator Pitching
-Business Plan Presentation • Standard presentation / Competition Format• Use of samples, power point or the like AVPs
-Elevator Pitch• Impromptu; simple language (Background, record, the
need, uniqueness, call to action closing-too good to ignore)
• Get attention, try the one minute pitch (Be prepared)• The worst thing that can happen is expanding your
network
Phase 2 – Module 1Social Development
Society develops in response to the contact and interaction between human beings and their material, social and intellectual environment. The incursion of external threats, the pressure of physical and social conditions, the mysteries of physical nature and complexities of human behavior prompt humanity to experiment, create and innovate.
Social Development Social development can be summarily
described as the process of organizing human energies and activities at higher levels to achieve greater results. Development increases the utilization of human potential.
Examples:• Capability Building Programs/Projects• Young Minds Academy – RAFI• Tech BootCamp - AFi
Social Development
The experience resulting from these contacts leads to learning on three different levels of our existence. – At the physical level, it enhances our control over
material processes. – At the social level, it enhances our capacity for
effective interaction between people at greater and greater speeds and distances.
– At the mental level, it enhances our knowledge.
Phase 2 – Module 2Advocacy
• Advocacy simply means actively supporting a cause and trying to get others to support it as well
• Advocacy is speaking up, drawing attention to an important issue and directing decision makers towards a Solution
• Advocacy is the strategic use of information to change policies that affect the lives of disadvantaged people
Advocacy
• Advocacy is influencing public policy through various forms of persuasive communication
• A process of social transformation aimed at shaping the direction of programs, policies, people participation to benefit marginalized sectors
• Advocacy is working with other people and organizations to make a difference and positive change

Assets are what we want to keep, build upon
and sustain for the future generations

Asset Based Community Development
Phase 2 – Module 3
What are Assets?
• popularly recognized attributes and advantages
• considered essential for the maintenance of rural life
• vital for the sustainability of the economy, society and environment
ABCD Asset Based Community Development
• Asset-based: Community development efforts begin by developing an understanding of what exists in the community – the abilities of local residents, associations and institutions.
• Internally Focused: Strategic planning or priority setting focuses on assets found within the community and does not rely upon the advice of outside experts or consultants.
• Relationship Driven: Local people, informal organizations and institutions work hard to connect with one another in order to be sure they are working as a team.
Why focus on Assets?• The best way to effectively address the challenges
that face communities is to have a good knowledge of the resources available to work on local issues.
• Building on the skills that people already have serves as a better foundation for dealing with the variety of concerns that exists in the community.
• All local residents, regardless of age, gender, race, ethnic background, place of residence, or other characteristics, can play an effective role in addressing important local matters.
ABCD Methods and Steps
• Organize a core group• Collecting stories• Mapping capacities and Assets• Build a vision and a plan• Mobilization and Linkages• Leverage activities, investments and outside
resource
Asset Mapping
Mapping community assets means: • collecting an inventory of all the good things
about your community • ranking the most valued aspects of your
community; and • discovering the reasons why people place high
value on assets in your community • The process of asset mapping provides a critical
element of community development – the engagement of people in the shaping of their community.
KEY POINTS AND ADVANTAGES ofAsset Mapping
• a positive approach to community development • combines community interests and creates
“common cause”
• realistic; starts with what you have rather than with what you don't have
• inclusive; assets can include both public, community and private assets
• a form of discovery • easy and fun to do
Asset Categories• HUMAN - skills, abilities and expertise of
individuals/associations/groups (e.g. artistic, teaching, community-building, entrepreneurial skills
• SOCIAL – infrastructure (buildings, monuments, roads & bridges), services (health, education, security, transport, power, communication, etc.)
• ECONOMIC – local jobs, livelihood, industries, products & services
• CULTURE – community values, practices & tradition, culture and arts
Asset Categories
• ECOLOGY – natural features and landmarks, natural resources (e.g. land, water, river, minerals, century-old trees, conservation park, etc.)
• POLITICAL – systems and structure of Governance, community participation (PIME) and decision-making
• SPIRITUAL – practices that strengthen relationships (GOD-MAN, MAN-GOD)
Social Enterprise? What the HECK?
• are social mission driven organizations which apply market-based strategies to achieve a social purpose. The movement includes both non-profits that use business models to pursue their mission and for-profits whose primary purposes are social. Their aim – to accomplish targets that are social and/or environmental as well as financial
• In short-Business with a cause?
<Make Meaning first, then make money will follow. If you start by trying
to make money, you don't make meaning, and money will not follow.>
-Art of Start, Guy Kawasaki
<Integration>
Social Enterprising is the FUTUREOur world is becoming
INSTRUMENTEDOur world is becoming
INTERCONNECTEDVirtually all things, processes
and ways of working are becoming
INTELLIGENT
Don’t worry...
IE’s Don’t work Hard..we work SMART
How can we live together,
Sustainably, Better?
• How do we infuse intelligence into systems for which no one enterprise or agency is responsible?
• How do we bring all the constituents together?
• Where should we start?
I AM A GREAT ASSET OF MY NATION and therefore I have the power to
bring this nation to great heights older generations can only dream of..
It starts with YOU, But Why You?
What can you do?
Flow Effect• Flow is the mental state of operation in which a person in an
activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, positive full involvement, and success in the process of the task at hand. It represents perhaps the ultimate in harnessing the emotions in the service of performing and learning.
Our Thrust:Environment + Technology + Culture ~ CITIZENSHIP
“We believe passionately in the power of sharing ideas to change attitudes, lives in our country; We seek to gain a deeper understanding of our selves, culture, heritage, & environment; And in turn transform those ideas into action and be the best that we can be, with the Philippines beside me.”
