What did You Tell Us in the 2011 Member and Primary Rep Survey?
OVERVIEW
Education and certification programs are broadly valued Communication is key, both vendor neutral peer networking and connecting with members Events are important, but balance attention with standards and other marketing work Standards, technical work and compliance – each member values different things
What did You Tell Us in the 2011 Member and Primary Rep Survey?
Education and Certification Programs
Education is evaluated as bright spot in general as an import thing that SNIA is doing well with overall. Suggestions for improvement included:
- Refresh content and succeed with CompTIA alliance - Add new credentials such as Storage Security - target outside of storage industry “insiders”
Communication - Social networking
Popular responses to multiple questions summarized: - SNIA should embrace and utilize all aspects - Viewed an importing to improve our position in the industry
What did You Tell Us in the 2011 Member and Primary Rep Survey?
Communication with and by Members Characterized as acceptable and viewed as very important to keep Members
aware of activities, new technical work, etc. Summary of key observations: - Communication is viewed as an important value to members - Members recognized importance of advising on adoption matters - Communication is part of connecting storage to business - Communication should support Member and Volunteer recognition - Frequency and content of SNIA communiques and e-Mails seen as fine
SNIA Events - Importance of SNW was acknowledged as well as value of SDC - Questions regarding the “balance” of events being possibly too heavy in
SNIA’s marketing mix were asked
What did You Tell Us in the 2011 Member and Primary Rep Survey?
Standards, Technical Work and Compliance Mixed feedback in this survey section: - Some members feel that the work in current technical areas is sufficient and
focused on “right” set of technologies (e.g., Cloud with CDMI and Green with efforts with EPA)
- Some members suggest more focus and more adherence to interoperability considerations
Relevance of SNIA (to the Storage Industry)
Mixed opinions in this survey section as well: - Some urge the Association to embrace fewer activities and technical areas
and do them better, with more industry impact, etc. - Others advocate for SNIA to seek expanded technologies and programs
SNIA Fiscal Report
Notes: 1. SNIA sustained a multi-year investment cycle by spending down 2. SNIA is weathering the current industry M&A with careful, effective controls 3. FY11 ends 11/30/11; plans to end net positive; 1st positive year since FY08 4. Membership, F&I and SNW revenue grew by 4.9% in FY10 compared to FY09 5. Reserve investment portfolio change in April ‘11 resulted in 2x rev/mth over FY10
Summary
2011 was a year of sustained financial prudence and performance. The SNIA staff and operations reorganization of 2009 aligned the expense and contributions of resources with a predictable and manageable contributions from member fees and event revenue. SNIA Staff had no attrition and we added three key Contractors
2011 was an important year as SNIA continued to pursue its strategic programs to reinforce the value of linking core storage technologies and standards with upper layers of management functions for data and information
CSI, GSI, SSSI, SMI…
2012 will present interesting opportunities and challenges (for SNIA and the storage market). However, the still sensitive economic situation mandates that we continue to carefully apply our resources to our priorities.
Finally… We could not do the work of the SNIA without our passionate and dedicated volunteers, some of whom will be specially recognized at our January Symposium in San Jose
The support and loyalty of all SNIA members and volunteers is appreciated
