Greetings Folks,A wee posting here, for those who shared or who followed our very lekker short toursto Balele, Utrecht and Spioenkop, Winterton. As is my penchant, its the pics whichwill do the talking and these holidays presented countless photographicopportunities. Numerous birds were ticked off the list, including the Lesser BreastedChat and the game viewing was marvellous. Where I/we hit the wall was the bassfishing, with what must be the world record on “blanking”, having fished 10 daysstraight and not landed a fish. I wasn’t sure if it was the coffee coloured water, the fullmoon, my karma being ‘out’ or what, but it was hugely frustrating. It only dawnedupon me on the 2nd last day that we’d not seen another bass boat throughout theperiod – Hello, if the locals aren’t there, then I should have noticed that.
Perhaps the highlight for me was the rare privilegeof being taken by Eric manager of Spioenkop ona restricted access drive down to below the damwall, where the fury of the water has themist blowing al la Vic Falls and the thunderingof that awesome power had me all amped up.From a photographic viewpoint, these few are my favourites…

Canon EOS 6D Mark II The EOS 6D was launched in 2012. The EOS6D Mark II seems the most likely name, since '7D' is already taken and Canon has ahistory off adding 'Mark' numbers to newcameras which replace well-establishedoriginals. Canon Rumors has posted a tipthat the new camera will be pitchedslightly higher, and there is quite a priceand feature gap between the current 6Dand 5D Mark III which it could slot into. The6D's specs are pretty basic, so Canon couldchoose to replace the sensor with the 22.3-megapixel imaging unit from the 5D MarkIII. Swapping over to the 5D Mark III'ssophisticated 61-point AF system, though, would perhaps be a step too far.Or Canoncould take a different approach entirely, follow Nikon's lead with the D750, andintroduce a more versatile, swivel-screendo-it-all enthusiasts D-SLR between the 6Dand the 5D Mark III. With Wi-Fi and maybeeven GPS built in, it could be like a full-frame version of the 70D – and that really
could shake up the market.
Canon EOS-1D x Mark IICanon has indicated higher resolutions areimminent (see the DP Review interviewwith Canon), and the EOS-1D x, launchedway back at the end of 2011, would seemto be the obvious candidate. Nikon has hadthe high-resolution full-frame market toitself ever since the launch of the 36-megapixel D800, and surely Canon can't letthis continue much longer? But there hasbeen so much crazy talk about a super-high-resolution Canon pro SLR over thepast few years – all of which has come tonothing – that it's tempting to take anynew rumours with a pinch of salt. However… the EOS-1D x is three years old, there is speculation that Sony has a 46-megapixel full-frame sensor in the pipelineand Canon has indicated (DP Reviewinterview) that it will use sensors fromother makers if they are the best ones forthe job.
Camera Rumours for 2015

Nikon D7200Nikon Rumors thinks the D7100 will bereplaced with a new D7200. Our cameratimeline chart supports this – the D7100was launched back at the start of 2013,and recent launches lower down the rangemean that although it's a more powerfulcamera with more features, it now has nosensor advantage over Nikon's cheapermodels.Nikon Rumors expects a newly-designed 24-megapixel sensor, a tiltingscreen like that seen on the full-frameD750, built-in Wi-Fi, the same 6fpscontinuous shooting speed but a buffercapable of handling up to 16 RAW+JPEGimages and video improvements. If true, this will represent an incremental upgradeto Nikon's top amateur camera, and notthe long-awaited replacement for Nikon'spro-spec D300s.This would leave Nikon in abit of a hole. With the release of the EOS7D Mark II, Canon now has an affordableamateur APC-format camera that canshoot at professional speeds – 10 framesper second. Nikon does not – not by a longchalk.
Nikon D400 The obvious name for any D300sreplacement would be the D400, and apartfrom the same strengths as the D300s – all-metal body, pro controls, Nikon's pro-level51-point AF system – it would need high-speed continuous shootingcapability.Sensor-wise, Nikon has a choice. Its last-generation 16-megapixel APS-Csensor (D7000) might not be the mostmodern, but Nikon uses a non-anti-aliasedversion in the CoolPix A to good effect, andit might ease the pressure on the camera'sprocessor and buffer and allow the high-speed continuous shooting that thiscamera would need. The alternative is the24-megapixel sensor currently used by theD7100 and other models, but the limitedbuffer capacity and shooting speed of theD7100 suggests that getting similar speedsto the EOS 7D Mark II may be no easymatter for Nikon. We're dubious. We reallydo hope there will be a D400, but rightnow we're not that optimistic.
