SMSGYAN – Information & Communication

The SMSGYAN is a tool that enables people without Internet connection, or with instable or very expensive Internet connection to get information from search engines by simply sending an SMS. Most people in developing countries e.g. in India, don’t have Internet, but they all have mobile phones and this is where SMSGYAN comes in. Here the SMSGYAN acts as a digital divide by providing Internet to the offline world. Gyan means 'knowledge' in Hindi, and the SMSGYAN provides information services, which include dictionary, encyclopaedia, job search, health, stock market and more via text messages. From the user point of view, it is a simple and cheap way to search the Internet via text. A user would have to type an SMS with the query and send it to 55444.

Once the Gyan engine gets a query from a mobile user, the algorithm spiders the World Wide Web or Wikis on the Web for related information, zeroes in on the most relevant inputs, and then shortens it to be sent to a mobile phone via the text message route.

SMSGYAN currently works in India and will be transferred to other developing countries. The costing is done on a revenue sharing basis with the operator.
