Station 5: King Julien’s Beach
a) Select any two characters on King Julien’s Beach Party-Go-Round, and justify if one of them is more superior than the other.
b) What is the maximum vertical distance between the two characters that you have selected in (a)?
Characters chosen•Monkey•Giraffe
Objective
a) To determine whether one of the characters previously mentioned is more superior than the other
b) To determine the maximum vertical distance between the two characters
Definition
Superior- If a character stands higher than another character more than 50% of the time, it is considered as superior
Higher-When one of two reference points on the characters, originally of the same height, is of a greater altitude than the other reference point
Reference points
Resources
•Stopwatch•Video camera•Measuring tape•Logger Pro software•Computer
Variables
•Distance of reference point on the monkey from the ground
•Distance of reference point on the giraffe from the ground
Data collection
•Method▫Video-taking▫Time the duration
Assumptions/ limitations
•Each ride is the same▫Time (duration)▫Position at which the characters start▫Speed at which the characters rise and fall
•The hand of the person filming is steady•Human reaction time (stopwatch)

From the data collected, the monkey is above the giraffe for 1 min 16 s, which is 69.1% of the total time, 1 min 50 s. (cor. to 3 sig. fig.)
As 69.1% > 50%, therefore the monkey is more superior than the giraffe.
b) Maximum vertical distance:Scale of the image=1 unit to 0.795 cm (cor.to 3 sig. fig.)Maximum distance between two characters on the image=26.786 unitsActual distance between two characters = 26.786 X 0.795 = 21.3 cm (cor. to 3 sig. fig.)
The End.
Thank you!
