• In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Wetlands Watch was inspired by the crowdsourcedflood monitoring efforts undertaken by private citizens

• The App has been available on the iOSplatform since mid-2014

• Released major upgrade to version 2.0 in September 2016 with inclusion of data download features for event managers on the App’s searisingsolutions.com website.

Examples of Crowdsourced Hydro-correctionOne of the biggest

unanticipated benefits of Catch the King was the

free hydrologic correction of fine-scale drainage features missing from

aerial lidar surveys.

This can be laborious to fix and involves field surveys to confirm; often costing several $100k for private

firms to correct! VA got this for free through CtK.

What We Learned from

~200 flooding water samples collected during the king tide event in Norfolk, VA.• Particulate Nitrogen and

Carbon;• Total suspended solids;• Dissolved components

(nitrite, nitrate, ammonium, phosphate, and urea);

+

• 40 samples for Enterococcusabundance analysis

C. Conclusions

What We Learned from

This estimation

with conservative

numbers shows that

~1,800 pounds of nitrogen

are being introduced to the

water system in a single

tidal flooding event!

This amount equals the

total nitrogen Land-based

Total Maximum Daily Loads

(TMDL) already permitted

for the Lafayette River.

2. Review of:

A. App Data

B. What We Learned

C. Conclusion

In Conclusion

1. More specific experiments and area-focused measurements should be done to confirm water quality estimations.

2. The results from Measure the Muck suggest that nutrients transported into the water system due to flooding events should be considered for a better estimation of TMDL.

3. VIMS’ flood forecast model was accurate:

≈1.4 in. (3.5 cm) ≈19.3 ft. (5.9 m)

In Conclusion

3. Catch the King effectively crowdsourced hydro-correction. Ground-truthing information is valuable. Some waterways weren’t accurately represented by LiDAR:• Including ditches and narrow creeks• Areas canopied by trees during flyovers

4. Engaging the public affords scientists greater extensibility for these type of projects (i.e. private property access).

5. Truly anyone can help us better understand tidal flooding and its cascading impacts!
