“I’ve been doing a little bit oftraining, but nowhere near theamount I did back in the day,” ajovial Michael said.
“But the Weekend Warriorevents are about the peoplewho are active and getthemselves out of their comfortzones. These are very well-runseries and coming over toNoosa and Mooloolaba, whereI have spent so many years, willbe enjoyable.
“Queensland doesn’t reallyhave a lot of ocean swimminglike this so it’s definitelychallenging and the 2km swimsaren’t easy.
“Everyone loves a bit of abody bash and we will have areally good representation inthe event this year.”
Noosa’s event opens the Milk& Co Queensland Ocean SwimSeries, which will also haverounds at Mooloolaba(February 16), Caloundra(March 9) and Coolangatta(March 30).
Saturday’s inaugural eventwill include classic oceanswimming distances, 2km and1km, a 300m kids event, teamscharity relay and an excitingnew elite championship format.
Elite swimmers will contestboth the long course and shortcourse events with the bestoverall performer walking awaywith the cash prize (male and
female).The new format will make for
a great spectacle and createsome strong competitionthroughout the day, rather thansimply for the main event.
Series director John Guisesaid entries were “trackingreally well” with a strongSunshine Coast, Gold Coastand Brisbane contingent, with2km proving the most popular.
“The response has beengreat across the board with areal mix of athletes involved,”he said.
“There are plenty of eliteopen water swimmers andsome other sports people.”
Among the sports starscompeting will be dualinternational Mat Rogers, whois a keen triathlete nowadays.

TWO-time Ironman 70.3 worldchampion Melissa Hauschildtcould begin her quest to winthe Kona Ironman WorldChampionship from theSunshine Coast.
Hauschildt, 29, had anoutstanding 2013, winning 11of the 14 half ironman (70.3)events – 1.9km swim, 90kmbike ride and 21.1km run – onoffer, finishing second in twoand third in the other.
She took up 70.3s in 2011after a career in steeplechasecapped by five national titles inthe 3000m format, and then ashift to triathlons in 2010.
She enjoyed immediatesuccess in triathlon, winningevents in Kingscliff and RabyBay, as well as setting a newcourse record in the GoldCoast Half Ironman Triathlon.
She has gone on todominate the half Ironman andbecome the most fearedfemale 70.3 competitor in theworld.
Her success in 70.3s has herseriously considering a switchto the Ironman distance (3.8kmswim, 180km bicycle ride and42.2km run).
“The only reason I want to dothe Ironman is to do Kona andhopefully win Kona and tickthat off,” she said.
“But I have never done anIronman.”
Hauschildt’s proven ability toadapt quickly to new distanceshas her confident of a smooth
transition to Ironman shouldshe choose to do so.
“I come from a runningbackground and used to do1500 metres (before moving onto the steeplechase),” she said.
“So jumping up to a halfIronman was a big step and Iguess I need to get a goodtraining block in and see how itgoes and I won’t know until Itry.
“It will be a totally differentgame.”
Adelaide-born Hauschildt,who had lived on the GoldCoast, will celebrate her moveto the Sunshine Coast bycompeting in the opening eventof the Queensland OceanSwim Series, the NoosaSummer Swim, this Saturday.
Not a renowned swimmer,Hauschildt said the oceanswim would provide her withthe opportunity to hone heropen-water skills.
“Swimming is my weakest
leg so it really helps myswimming and living in the city,I never swim in the open water,”she said.
“I love these races where alldifferent abilities run into thewater and it’s a big mess.
“It makes you stronger and itreally helps me and they are alot of fun.”

HE’S lived with monks inChina, been a respected chefand instructed in a range ofmartial arts.
Now, Peregian Beach’sDmitri Simons is poised to helpinspire Sunshine Coasttriathletes.
Dmitri is the new head coastof Tri Alliance’s Sunshine Coastchapter. The Tri Alliance squadis expanding its reach nextmonth and the 41-year-old willtake the lead reins, supportedby Mountain Creek swimmingcoach Glen Mahoney.
Tri Alliance’s Mark Turnersaid Dmitri’s broad career andbackground was pivotal in hisappointment to the position.
Many triathletes will resonatewith Dmitri’s introduction totriathlon. He only undertook hisfirst race in 2009, but within ayear was representing Australiaat the 2009 worldchampionships at the GoldCoast where he finished 19th inthe men’s 35-39 age group.
Dmitri then went on to finishfourth at Auckland worldchamps in 2012 in the 40-44age group.
The father of five girls madethe transition to the tri-sportafter becoming frustrated withweightlifting.
“I just got sick of doing thetraining. I felt injured all of thetime and I thought ‘I’ve had agutful of this body building typestuff’ I’ll have a crack at someendurance,” Dmitri said.
“I took to it like duck towater. I had always enjoyedrunning, but hadn’t swum for along time and had never owneda road bike. It was all a learningexperience.”
Helping pave the way tosuccess has been Dmitri’s longinvolvement with martial arts.
His great grandfather isChinese, and Dmitri has astrong affiliation with Chinesemartial arts. He’s proficient inabout 12 genres.
“It certainly helps me with alot of the stuff I do in triathlon,
from flexibility through to focusand specific relaxation withmuscle movement,” he said.
“In application to triathlon, it’sall about effortless energy.
“With the three disciplinesthe more you relax the lessoxygen your body is chewing,the more energy you have to gofaster. In principle, the moreyou relax the harder you go.
“It’s a hard thing to get yourhead around, but the sameapplies to martial arts. Themore you relax the more poweryou generate.”
During recent years he hasbeen a personal trainer,progressing to more“performance training” to helpathletes excel in their chosensports.
A qualified chef, Dmitri canalso assist with nutrition and
dietary advice.Having written triathlon
programs in one-on-onescenarios, Dmitri jumped at thechance to train a group andshare his passion.
“I love what the sport hasdone for me and I love doing itfor other people,” Dmitri said.
“I enjoy working with novicesand beginners right through thehigh level guys who areperforming at an elite level.”
Tri Alliance Sunshine Coastwill be launched at this week’s
QTS round at Caloundra, butthe formal celebration will beheld next Friday.
The group will initially swimon Monday and Wednesdaymornings at Star Swim School(Wises Rd pool,Maroochydore), have bikesessions at Custom Bike Fit onFridays, run from CottonTree/Alexandra Headland onTuesdays and there will be avariety of options on Saturdays.
Sessions will expand as thegroup grows.

IT IS the Sunshine Coast’sbiggest networking group ontwo wheels.
Business Cycles boasts aregular riding crew of between70-75 people everyWednesday morning.
It was started almost threeyears ago by Mooloolaba bikeshop Giant Sunshine Coast,formerly Spin City Cycles, andhas attracted varioussponsorship donations fromlocal businesses and council.
Giant managing director IanVant said the focus was oncycling, building socialrelationships and informalnetworking, rather thanin-your-face business referrals.
“We get so much positivefeedback and the great thinghas been to see how the ridershave progressed and got fitterand fitter,” he said.
“We have everyone back toour shop for coffee after theride and a few people get upand tell the group what they do.Certainly, there has been somebusiness done, but the mainaim is for people to gettogether and ride, and look out
for each other.“There are some people
starting to ride outside theWednesdays, which is great.”
Engineers, tradies, lawyers,photographers, accountants,stockbrokers, shopfitters,retailers, teachers, coffee shopowners and draughtsmen areamong the diverse mix of menand women who regularly ridewith the group.
There is no cost and there isa female-only ride on the firstWednesday of every month.The ride takes the cyclistsalong the same round-trip routeeach week, from Mooloolaba toCaloundra (30-45kms,depending on fitness level).
The group is broken intothree levels of fitness, with thefaster bunch pushed furthersouth to Pelican Waters beforeturning around.
This year, Ian has big plansto win more corporatesponsorship for the group andto get 150 people along to therides each week.
He would also like to expandthe group to offer three or fournetworking evenings a year,and run an annual charity ride.

LIVES of children sufferingcerebral palsy on the SunshineCoast have been helped by adetermined group of cyclists.
More than $40,000 wasraised through donations andentry fees for the annual ArgonLaw Buderim9 Challenge heldbefore Christmas.
There were 207 riders up forthe challenge, with the courseof 75km including the hills ofMons Rd, Lindsay Rd, JonesRd, Mooloolaba Rd, Dixon Rd,Cogill Rd, Ballinger Rd, CrosbyHill Rd and Glenmount Rd –which includes an overall rise inelevation of 1700 metres.
“We had 140 riders completeall nine hills before the 8amcut-off, which is incredible andshows how hard the guys havebeen training,” organiser GregPaix from the Sunshine CoastCycling Club said.
While achieving all nine hills isthe ultimate, the club welcomesriders of all abilities to tackle asmany hills as they can withinthe three hours.
Making last year’s event evenmore special was theparticipation of Greg’s son Joshand his good mate MaxQuagalio.
Josh and Max are bothcerebral palsy suffers, but thatdidn’t stop them from gettingout and joining the Buderim9bunch.
Riding his trike, Max(pictured right) completed threehills while Josh rode is mobilityscooter up two alongside hisdad.
Fifteen-year-old Josh alsomade a speech post-challengeand thanked all participants fortheir efforts.
Greg said the SunshineCoast Cycling Club was “overthe moon” with this year’sevent, particularly pleasing wasthe roadside support ridersreceived from Buderimresidents who clapped andcheered throughout themorning.
First-time riders of the eventHailey McGinty and GlennWilkinson from Maroochydore
managed seven and eight ofthe hills respectively, butinsisted they’d be back nextyear to conquer all nine.
“Cogill hill was the hardest,but I’m pretty pleased as weonly decided to do the eventthree weeks ago,” Hailey said.
Describing the hot conditionsas challenging as the hills,Glenn said he went though fivedrinking bottles on his ride.
“Even so, I was cramping upa bit at the end, so it’s off to thebeach now for a swim,” hesaid.
Although a challenge riderather than a race, local riderSam Hemsley was still pleased
to be the first woman home injust over two-and-a-half-hours.
“It was hard getting up at 3o’clock for it, but spectatorsalong the way really helped andmade it much more enjoyablethan the hill training needed forit,” she said.
The Buderim9 is going fromstrength-to-strength, with themoney raised nearly double ofwhat was achieved in 2012.
Riding numbers will becapped at 500 for futureevents, and if the momentumcontinues that figure could beachieved within the next coupleof years.

KEEP YOUR COOL■ If it is hot and humid and you have an endurance event to do,pre-cooling may help enhance your heat storage capacity andtherefore your performance■ If the conditions are only mild and/or you are involved in sprintefforts, pre-cooling may be more detrimental than helpful■ Choose a practical method of pre-cooling that targets both skincooling and reduction in core temperature.■ Keeping iced towels/vest and slushies in an esky is an easyoption for many competition situations.■ The ideal timing for pre-cooling is still under investigation,however as a general guideline, leave the towel/ice vest around theneck and body area for around 30-60 minutes prior to competition.■ Cold beverages can be consumed regularly in the hour prior to anevent, or an ice slushie consumed as close as comfortable to thebeginning of competition.■ As always, trial different techniques before training sessions tofind which work best and are most comfortable for you.
IF YOU are an athlete inQueensland, exercising inextreme heat is nothing new.
Most of us train in the earlymorning to avoid the hottestpart of the day, however manyevents and competitions arestill held when temperaturesand humidity are high.
As we are in the depths ofsummer, the risk of heat stressincreases dramatically.
Exercising in warm or hotenvironmental conditions cancause an increase in internal(core) body temperature whichcan lead to heat illness and isassociated with a decline inexercise performance.
We’ve talked previouslyabout the importance ofhydration to prevent heatstress, however there are someother techniques that can helpyou keep your cool whencompeting on a hot day.
Pre-cooling is a strategy thatis increasingly being used byelite athletes, to combat thedebilitating effects ofheat-stress and its associatedfatigue, and to extend theperiod in which an athlete cantolerate a hot environment.
Many studies have been ableto show that pre-cooling canimprove exercise performance,
particularly in enduranceevents, and possibly also insome team sport situationswith intermittent high intensitybursts of exercise.
It does not seem to be aseffective for short term, highintensity sprints.
There are now a number ofoptions for pre-coolingimmediately prior to exercise inthe heat, including external andinternal tactics, andcombinations of both. Somestrategies are obviously morepractical than others.
Internal cooling methodsinclude the ingestion of iceslurries (slushies) or very coldbeverages, aimed at coolingthe body’s core temperature.Ice slurries can be veryeffective, and may even providea benefit when used as amouthwash and not ingested.

Skin temperature is loweredsignificantly by the use of ice orvery cold garments such asiced towels, ice jacket, gelpacks, arctic vests or an iceband (usually worn around theneck) however the effect ismore localised than whole bodycooling methods.
These can be an effectiveand practical methods,however, for pre race coolingwhile still allowing the athlete togo through their usual pre raceroutines.
A review of the literaturesuggests that the best coolingmethods (in terms ofperformance enhancement) arecold drinks, cooling packs and
a cooled room.Cooling vests and water
application showed smallereffects.
However, from a practicalpoint of view, colddrinks/slushies, cooling packsand vests are the morepractical methods available onthe track, road, beach, fieldetc.
A recent study at the AISsaw cyclists improve theirpower output by 3%, and theirperformance time by 1.3%following the drinking of an iceslurry (slushie) made fromsports drink along with theapplication of an iced towel,prior to doing a time trial in32-35 degrees Celsius,50-60% humidity conditions.
These researcherssummarised that a practicalpre-cooling strategy involvedthe combination of applicationof iced towels with the
ingestion of a sports drinkslushie. This can result in areduction in both skin and coretemperature, helping improveendurance performance in hotconditions. It is important tonote that benefits toperformance are only seenwhen exercise is carried out ina hot environment, and precooling is of no advantage intemperate conditions.

HOME ground advantagecould be just what Jess Hoskinneeds to get herself onto thepodium in the Queensland TriSeries on Sunday.
The talented 15-year-old hasbeen knocking on the door of atop-three finish during the firstthree races, and after missingthe past two rounds due tonational junior commitments, isready to fire at home.
Competing against older andmore experienced girls in theQTS races, Jess has finishedfifth, fourth and sixth.
After coming up through theranks at Caloundra TriathlonClub, she joined SunshineCoast Tri Academy last year.
“She has more explosivespeed than any of the girls thatshe is racing against,” academycoach Toby Coote said.

In his first long distanceevent after a two-year layoffdue to injury, Richard finished in4:10:56, (29:39, 2:15:15,1:23:04) which earned himthird position in the men’s30-34 age group and 13thoverall.

But the boys from BondiRescue will be in town duringApril to film an hour-long TVspecial at the Julia Creek Dirt nDust Festival.
At least three Bondi Rescuestars have confirmed they willattend the 20th annual event totake part in the Cannington Dirtn Dust Triathlon – widelyregarded as Australia’stoughest sprint distance tri.
It’s has to be Australia’s mostunique three-day festival whichincludes the triathlon, followedby horse racing, then a bullride,some “bog snorkelling” and agigantic party thrown in themiddle.
“Bondi Beach and JuliaCreek are at two extreme endsof the scale environmentallyand that contrast is sure tomake for some great stories,”said executive producerRichard Scotts.
“The Bondi Boys are all veryexcited about the project. Ithink their particular brand oflarrikinism will see them blendin pretty well with the ringersand farm hands of outbackQueensland…once they getover the initial culture shock.”
Dirt n Dust FestivalCommittee president StephenMalone said the project was atestament to the success of thefestival.
“RJM Media’s interest in theDirt n Dust Festival says a lotabout the event and where it’sheaded,” Stephen said.
“We’ve always pridedourselves on givingfestival-goers an authenticoutback experience and Ibelieve that’s been a bigdrawcard in getting the Bondiproject off the ground.
