• Good public transport network on corridors

• Large areas of derelict, vacant, urban land

• 6 Venues and 1 live site for the 2014 Games

• Sporting and tourist attractions e.g. Celtic Park

• Relatively limited active travel network (34km)

Demographic Characteristics

• Very low car ownership (73% no car!)

• 27% walk, 24% bus, only 29% drive to work

• Social deprivation; @50% ‘income deprived’

• @50% population ‘economically inactive’

• Chronic ill health:

- Male life expectancy 10 years below the

Scottish Average (63.5 years v. 74 years)

- 25% children overweight or obese (2006)

- 2x rate of Coronary Heart Disease deaths

- 5x+ rate of drug & alcohol related deaths

Project Aims

• Promote active travel to Glasgow 2014 venues

• Increase proportion of trips made by sustainable, active and healthy travel modes

• Improve the health of residents and visitors by increasing physical activity through active travel

• Dramatically improve accessibility of the East End by sustainable travel

• Reduce transport related CO2 emissions

£2.15m Major Upgrades to Walking and Cycling Infrastructure on 3 Corridors:

• Clydeside NCN 75 - 7km, off-road link. Personal

security upgrades, connections (£250k)

• Glasgow Green to Parkhead - 2.5km

‘Copenhagen’ style fully kerb segregated cycle

route James Street & London Road (£500k)

• Merchant City to Parkhead - 3km ‘traffic free’

corridor via Gallowgate, entry treatments and

pedestrian priority (£1.4m)

Headline Targets

At project outset headline targets are:

• All trips to 2014 Games Venues in the East End to be by non-car modes

• Increase walking mode share by min 15%

• Increase cycling mode share by min 25%

• Increase proportion of adults and children meeting minimum activity levels

• Reduce the volume of transport related CO2 emissions generated by the SCSP area
