    9. Im not sure

7or 2xample if you are asked a question like this( &o you think @limate @hange can the way we

are li+ing now 'ou can answer( I am not an expert of climate change but I think it will bring us

    no good.

@larifying your meaning is +ital point in Part%! long for getting better band score.

Se+eral techniques you can use here to demonstrate that you are able to gi+e clear, precisemeaning It will make your 2nglish sound more ad+anced and natural.

5emember, this is common practice among nati+e speakers to ensure their listeners fullyunderstand the points they want to make.

/ne thing you can do on this regard is to use conditional sentences to describe cause and effect.

3ook at the use of AifA as conditional sentences below.

If this city keeps growing, e+entually it will Boin up with the towns around it.

It would ha+e been better if the airport had been built further from the city.

If cities grow too quickly, they become chaotic and unhealthy places to li+e.

If the go+ernment spent more money on de+eloping rural areas, people wouldnt be so

keen to mo+e to the cities.

6nother thing you can do on this context is to began a sentence with Personally...means you

know that what youre saying is only your opinion or preference, and may people will disagree.

7or example, Personally, I wouldn`t want to live in a city, but I`ve lived in London all my life .

Part%! questions are focusing on arguments as well as contrasting ideas. 4ood use of ad+anced,

natural%sounding phrases for connecting and contrasting ideas is one of the things that can help

    get you a high score.

$ere we will discuss two ad+anced way to contrast ideas.

    1. 0sing A$a+ing said that...A ( #his can be useful for contrasting ideas which are contradictory

2xample( I think its +ery important to know whats happening in your country and in the world.$a+ing said that, I dont actually follow the news carefully e+ery day.

In this example, the candidate contrasts what he thinks with what she actually does. Note that

you use a stress on saying AsaidA to sound more natural.

. 'ou can also use Aapart from thatA to contrast an exception with a general rule.

    2xamples(

#hey may be exciting for people who ha+e a special interest in the subBect, but apart from

that, they tend not to ha+e a lot of appeal.

I watch the news and some current%affairs programs, but apart from that, I watch +ery

    little #C.

6part from checking the headlines on the internet, I dont really follow the news.

5emember, gi+ing complex, structured answers will gain you marks, but it may not always be possible.

#he model answers gi+en below are written to demonstrate a range of strategies, and only the

most ad+anced candidates can consistently gi+e answers like these.

3ean from these examples, but unless you need band D.9 or higher, dont worry about gi+ing

    6/7

such complex answers to e+ery question yourself.

    1. &o you think the quality of #C in your country is generally good

#here are three or four channels which are quite high quality, and in particular we ha+e an arts

channel which produces some excellent programs. "ut the maBority of channels dont seem high

quality to me. #hey show a lot of imported programs, moronic game shows and repeats there are

far too may ad+ertisement as well. /n some channels, they take a half%hour program and make it

up to an hour with ad+ertisements and trailers for other programs.

;$ere the speaker 4i+es a hypothetical scenario of how things could be different<

. )hat problems do you think can be caused by watching too much #C

/b+iously, its not +ery good for the health to sit still for hours at a time. I know I always feelquite bad if I sit in front of the #C for an entire e+ening. In my opinion, theres also a danger that

watching #C can become a substitute for real life. Its easier to sit at home and watch #C than to

go out and meet people. "ut its ob+iously better to go out and do something more social and

    acti+e.

;#he candidate starts here with an ob+ious idea, then add a less ob+ious, more philosophical

    idea.<

!. )hat are the ad+antages and disad+antages of showing imported #C programs

#he ad+antage is that some imported programs are +ery high quality. #heyre well written, well

acted and cost a lot of money to produce. In that respect, theyre of then much better than

anything produced locally. $owe+er, the disad+antage of showing a lot of imported programs is

that it means we ha+ent de+eloped much of a #C production industry in my country. If we made

more #C programs. there would be more Bobs for actors, directors, script writers etc. and we

might start making interesting programs rather than mostly Bust silly game shows, as I mentioned

     before.

;#he candidate starts with the exception ;high quality programs< and then describes the general

    rule.<

    8. &o you think that the things children see on #C and in films can influence their beha+ior

#his has been discussed a lot in the media, especially the question A&oes watching +iolence on

#C make children +iolentA In my opinion, children dont ha+e a problem distinguishing

between fantasy and reality. I wouldn-t let my kids watch horror films, but thats because I think

  • 8/15/2019 Smart Ways to Score High in Ielts Speaking Part 3

    7/7

it would upset them, not because I think theyd star( killing people> #he area where I think #C

and films really can change their beha+iors is ad+ertising. @hildren are +ery easy to influence. 6

lot of ad+ertisements on #C are aimed directly at children, and some films these days seem little

more than ad+ertisements for toys or computer games.

;In this example, the candidate starts with an ongoing debate first and mo+es on to own opinion

by contrasting with the popular idea<

    9. &o you think $ollywood films can change local cultures

Perhaps a combination of 6merican films, #C and music can ha+e an effect. 6 lot of young

people dress in quite 6merican%looking style, and a lot of 2nglish words and phrases ha+e

entered our language. Some habits ha+e changed too. 7or example, young people drink more

alcohol than their parents did. Perhaps thats because of influence from the media.

;$ere the candidate expands the focus of the question and makes sure it still includes what the

    examiner asked<

    @onclusion

I23#S speaking part%! is all about showing examiners your ability to break an argument with

examples and appropriate logic. $ere you need the ability to present you idea with complex

    sentences.

3inking words can be helpful on this regard to present in a logical sequence so that it could be

easy for examiner to follow your con+ersation and this will e+entually prompt for high band

    score.
