Hotels & HospitalityPart 1What is your full name? My name is …Can I see your ID? Yes, here’s my ID cardWhere are you from? I’m from Rome, in Italy.Do you work or study? I work. I’m a business administrator.

Where do you work? I work for banca d’Italia, Italy’s largest bank.

Can you describe your work and the company?Yes, I am responsible for the administrati e functions in the city of Rome branch. Iwork as part of a team which pro ides support for essential admin functions withinthe bank. !he bank is the largest in Italy, it’s the central bank, and is part of the"uropean central banking system.

Why did you choose this job?#anca d’Italia is a large organi$ation and they had a ery good management training

program which I wanted to participate in after attending business school andgraduating with my degree in "conomics. I thought it would be a good %rst positionand that I could learn a lot before speciali$ing in the future.

Do you like your home?Yes, I lo e it. I ha e so many happy memories growing up there with my brothersand sister.

What will your future house look like?I really don&t know. If I stay here in 'ietnem then I suppose I would like to ha e atraditinal family home like my parents. #ut at the moment I&m planning to emigrateto (ustralia, so I don&t really know what type of house there I would like to gete entually.

Part Talk about a place where you stayed away from home. Please say:

    • Where was this place?• Why did you go there?• How long did you stay there?• How did you feel staying away from home?

I remember a few years ago when I was on acation from uni ersity I went to staywith my grandmother in )i orno on the coast. I spent two months there, helping herwith some work around the house and also writing my thesis for uni ersity. *he hasa ery old house near the coast and it has an ama$ing iew of the sea. It wascompletely di+erent from li ing in Rome, where I grew up as a child. !he air iscleaner and the town is much smaller and uieter so it was a ery nice change of

pace to li e there for the summer. I had isited se eral times before when I was achild but had ne er stayed more than a day or so and I had always gone with my

parents before - this time I went by myself - so it was uite di+erent. It was a reallynice time and it’s also a really good place to li e. It was ery rela ing and refreshingto see something di+erent and to meet some of the local people who are uitedi+erent from the people I usually hang out with in Rome. If I wasn’t working in the

bank and li ing in Rome I would maybe like to li e in a place like that where life isslower and more rela ed, somewhere out of the city, but at the moment I’mconcentrating on my career so the city has the best opportunities

Part !Ha"e you stayed at a hotel before?Yes, I ha e se eral times when I’ e been tra elling and also a couple of times for

trips related to work.Do you think people like to stay at hotels? Why?It depends on the indi idual, and the reason for the trip I suppose. *ome peopledon’t like being away from home so staying in a hotel maybe doesn’t appeal tothem. /ther people see it as a change to the normal - like a small ad enture -something di+erent and so they en0oy it. My father used to tra el a lot and li ed halfof the week in hotels, he always had some interesting stories about other people hemet and I think he uite en0oyed the ariety rather than staying in only one place allthe time.

What are the most important thin#s that a #ood hotel should ha"e?1ell, again it depends, if it’s a business trip then it needs to be close to where youneed to go and ha e all the facilities you need to get things done, maybe a businesscentre and things like that. #ut if you’re on acation then you probably think moreabout it being in a nice location, maybe with a nice iew, a balcony and comfortablerooms. In all cases, it’s important that the sta+ are warm and friendly and theser ice is good - that’s important if you’re tra elling on business or on acation.

Do you think hospitality jobs are desirable?I think the people who do them think they are. I mean, there are so many 0obs and Isuppose it can be ery interesting too. I ha e a friend who works in hotelmanagement and she lo es it, so yes, I think such 0obs are good and essential forthose who need to stay in a hotel.Really, hospitality is no di+erent from any other commercial sector - there are manydi+erent aspects to it and many di+erent kinds of 0obs a ailable. You can be a waiter or maid or de elop a professional career as a manager in a large multinational hotelchain - so there are plenty of opportunities for e eryone, 0ust like in any otherindustry.

Do you think the hotel industry should be re#ulated? Why?

!here should certainly be some sort of regulation which co ers minimum standards. You know, in terms of food in restaurants, basic hygiene and cleanliness in rooms, the pro ision of ser ices and such like.#ut I don’t know what else needs to be regulated … ah yes, health and safety, fore ample, a hotel has to make sure that guests can escape in the e ent of a %re oremergency, it needs to ha e emergency lighting and medical ser ices, I think.!hat sort of regulation is necessary and good for the industry in order to maintainminimum standards for the public.

What is your full name? My name is 2orgeCan I see your ID? Yes, of course, here’s my ID cardWhere are you from? I’m from #ra$ilDo you work or study? I work, I’m a Mechanical "ngineer

Why did you choose this job?#ecause I thought it was an interesting 0ob. I lo e designing things and knowing howthings work and trying to impro e them. !he 0ob I ha e at the moment is in the

automoti e sector which is great because I also lo e cars. *o it’s something I reallyen0oy and it is challenging work.

What kind of food do you like?Really, I like all kinds of food, but I suppose if I had to choose one type of food rather than another I would go for chicken, usually with some kind of spicy sauce.

When do you usually eat this food?3hicken4 1ell, I suppose a couple of times a week at least, although normally indi+erent recipes. *o sometimes it might be roasted, fried or grilled, and withdi+erent egetables accompanying it, so it’s always interesting.

%et s talk about the weather' What is the weather like in your country? It’s generally warm all year round, between 5673 and 8973, and there are twodistinct periods or seasons, a dry one and then the rainy season. !he rainy seasononly lasts for about three months so it’s uite short, most of the year it’s dry with

    0ust some occasional light showers.

What weather do you like more( hot or cold? Why?:ot, de%nitely. I don’t like cold weather, I think it’s horrible. I think hot, or warm, weather is much better, e erything is easier, you can wear fewer clothes, you don’t

ha e to heat your house or apartment and it’s much nicer to spend time outside.

Do you think you can li"e in e)treme hot or e)treme cold conditions? Why?;ersonally, I wouldn’t really want to li e in either of the e tremes, but some peopledo. !here are people who li e in ery cold places and others who li e in incrediblyhot climates. I suppose they are used to it so they ne er really think about it much. I

prefer when the climate is comfortable rather than e tremely hot or cold. I guess the people who do li e in locations where the climate is e treme do so because that’swhere they were born and it’s normal for them.

Part Talk about your best friend at school. Please say:• How did you meet him/her?• Describe him/her• What did you do together?• Why do you remember him/her?

My best friend at school was a boy called 2ohn. 1e met on the %rst day at schoolbecause we were in the same class and actually sat together at the same table inthe classroom. 1e became friends uickly because we were both cra$y about

playing soccer, we would play at e ery opportunity possible, in the morning break, at lunchtime, after school and also at weekends.

  • 8/17/2019 Ielts Speaking Aldyth

    4/66

2ohn was the same age as me, and li ed only a couple of streets from where I li ed.:e was slightly taller than me, with dark brown hair and brown eyes. :e was a eryhappy person and always laughing and 0oking around - e cept when he was playingsoccer, then he was ery serious about it - really, it was the only time he wasn’tmaking other people laugh. :e was a ery funny person, in fact, he still is.

I remember 2ohn especially because of all the great times we spent together, mainly playing soccer, but as we grew up we also did other things together and we were

ery close until his family mo ed away to another part of the country. 1e’ e kept intouch with each other o er the years though and about a year ago I went to isit himand his family for a couple of days. It was great to catch up with him and %nd outwhat he’s been doing since we last saw each other.

Part !Do you think it is di*cult for people to stay in contact with friends? it’s easy, instant and in most cases free. It’s certainly how I keep in touchwith most of my friends on a regular basis. " eryone has a mobile phone so nomatter where they are you can send them a uick te t and stay in touch. If they’rebusy when they recei e it then they can reply later when they’re free - that’s one ofthe main reasons it’s better than actually calling, you ne er ha e to worry about ifthe other person is occupied when you send them a te t.

Do you think families are important? +Why? , Why not?-I think families are ery important, especially when you are growing up. !hey

pro ide a foundation for society and a stable en ironment where children can growand de elop, while learning, and being protected and feeling lo ed. 3hilren learn somuch from their families and a lot of what they learn from their parents in particular? they carry on into their adult li es. Yes, they’re ery important.

Who are more important( friends or family? +Why?-I think as we get older sometimes friends become more important on a daily or short term basis. 1e may ha e more interaction with friends on a regular basis than ourown family, but in the long term, family is family, and the bond between you islonger and stronger than between friends. ;ersonally though, I think that both areimportant to ha e a well balanced life.

Why do you think people mi#ht care more about friends than family?1ell, possibly because for many people it’s their friends that they spend most timewith and share more acti ities with than with their family.

@or e ample, my family li es in another part of the country, so I don’t see them eryoften but I generally see my friends all the time. I share more of my life with myfriends than my family - but I wouldnAt say I care more about them than my family,

  • 8/17/2019 Ielts Speaking Aldyth

    5/66

but I do spend more time with them and talk to them more and do more things withthem than I do with my family. I suppose some people might end up caring more about their friends if they becomemore important than their family in their e eryday life or if they are not particularlyclose with their family.

    Historical buildin#

Part 1What is your full name? It’s *imone 2a aro ichCan I see your ID? Yes, here’s my passport.Where are you from? I come from #ulgaria originally, but I’ e been li ing here inMelbourne for the last si months.Do you work or study? I’m a student at the moment. I’m studying "nglish. I usedto work as a research analyst in #ulgaria.

.re you a mornin# or an afternoon person? Why?I suppose I’m more of a morning person, probably because I like to wake up eryearly and do things while I feel fresh and when the day is new. In the afternoons Itend to feel less energetic, in fact sometimes I feel positi ely la$y, so I de%nitely

    prefer mornings.

Did you enjoy your hi#h school? Why?Yes, I suppose I did. I had a lot of good friends and some good teachers so it was agood time for me, although like many people I didn’t like doing the e ams at the endof the year.

What was your fa"ourite subject? Why?I used to like history because it was about something di+erent from the real worldoutside, if you know what I mean. It was like looking through a window into adi+erent place and learning about the people at that time.

What subject learnt in school was helpful later in life? Why?I could say all of them really. I mean, learning logical thinking through math, how toresearch things in history and write essays and reports and stu+ like that are allskills that I’ e used in my adult life.

Part Talk about a historical building in your country or city that you know. Please say:

    • What and where is it?• When was it built? Why?• What is it known for?

I’d like to talk about a building near where I grew up as a child…it’s called (ssen’s@ortress. It’s about two kilometers away from (sseno grad where I spent a lot of mychildhood. !hat’s why I know it uite well. !he fortress is located on a ery steepridge which o erlooks the (ssenitsa Ri er. It was named (ssen’s fortress by the local

people following the national liberation of 56B6. !here is one special building withinthe fortress which is a church… it’s name is * eta #ogoroditsa ;etrichka and it was

constructed in the 59th century… and I belie e it’s now on the world heritage list ofhistorical buildings because of its cultural and national importance.

!he original fortress on the site was built by the !hracians as a stronghold for protection some time during the Cth ? th centuries #.3. and it was a ery busy andimportant site during the Roman and #y$antine eras. 1hen they e ca ated the sitethey managed to unco er the walls of the fortress, the feudal lord’s castle and alsosome water reser oirs. !he church though was the only building on the site whichwas really well preser ed.It has two le els, or Eoors, with a large dome with a cross on top and a wide

antechamber… it’s a structure a bit like a porch, as well as a large s uare belfrylocated abo e it.

!his church is famous in #ulgaria because of its incredible architecture, thedecoration of the south facade, which was done using plastic, and also because ofthe remains of some uni ue 5 th century murals.I like the building because when I used to isit it I could imagine what it was likehundreds of years ago when people used to li e there, and the iew is uiteimpressi e also.

Part !Is it important to conser"e old buildin#s? Why?;ersonally, I like old buildings and history so for me it’s a good idea to protect and

preser e them. 1e can learn a lot about our history from the buildings of the pastand it’s fascinating for children to see how people used to li e many centuries ago.!hey are a ery important part of our national culture and heritage .

Is the history useful for the comin# #enerations? Why?If people are interested in it, then it can be useful, yes. You can learn how the worldwas in the past, which countries had wars with each other and how and why citiesde eloped where they did… and many other interesting things. 1ithout history wewouldn’t ha e any sense of belonging to a place as people. Maybe people many years in the future will look back at us in the 95st century andbe ama$ed at the things we did and how we li ed. !hey’ll probably ha e more than

0ust buildings to study… they’ll be able to see cars, !'s and all the other thingswhich make up life for us at the moment...so yes it could be useful for them as a way to understand what was happening in the world.

What is the di/erence between houses built in the past and now?

I suppose the main di+erence would be the type of materials used to constructthem. /ld houses used to be built using stone and they were also bigger than mosthouses built today. Most of the houses were built simply as somewhere to pro ideshelter and a degree of comfort.

country so the si$e is uite di+erent from before. " en large houses nowadays takeup less space than a large house centuries ago.

Do you prefer a bi# or a small house? Why?I like to ha e space, but it doesn’t need to be an e tremely big house. I li e in anapartment here in Melbourne at the moment and it’s really nice. I share with twoother students and we each ha e our own room, there’s a kitchen and twobathrooms, a li ing area, a utility room and a balcony with a nice iew. Really, that’s

big enough for me. I wouldn’t want to li e in a really big house, e en if I could a+ordto buy one - but I wouldn’t want to li e in a really small house either. )ike I said, I prefer some space… I don’t like feeling cramped.

/ecti"e communicationPart 1What is your full name? My name is 2ose Miguel 'icenteCan I see your ID? Yes, of course, here you are.Where are you from? I’m from Me ico originally, but I’ e been here in the G* forabout C months now.Do you work or study? I’m studying here at the moment, trying to impro e my"nglish so I can stay and go to uni ersity here.

Is there a park in your area? Yes, there is, uite close to where I li e.

When did you last "isit a park? 2ust last weekend, I went with some friends and we played some baseball and thenhad something to eat at one of the stalls there. !hen we had some beers andrela ed for about an hour.

Would you like to stay in a bi# house, small house? Why? ( big house, with a big garden and lots of space. I like spending time in the gardenof my parent&s house, it&s so peaceful. I also lo e dogs, so I think it&s better to ha elots of space for them to run and play without needing to go out in the street.

What kind of accommodation do you prefer?1ell, I like where I stay at the moment, but ideally I&d like to ha e my own housesomeday in the future, with a garden. I prefer a house because normally you ha emore space. I would also like to li e in a uieter neighborhood as the city centre canbe uite noisy sometimes.

Part Describe an important letter that you ha e recei ed. Please say:! When did you recei e the letter?! Who was it from?! Why was it important?

)ast week I recei ed a letter from my bank back home. It was originally sent to mymother’s house, my home address in Me ico, and she forwarded it on to me here.!he letter was important because it e plained about a change in the password

password and then follow the instructions to update my access authori$ation so thatI can continue to use the site in the future.

    Part !

What does 2e/ecti"e communication mean to you?"+ecti e4 It means that the communication, whate er it is, e plains the messageclearly and tells the person recei ing it what to do, if anything, and how and when todo it. If it is e+ecti e, then it will be clear, logical and the recipient should ha e nofurther uestions or need to clarify any points - unless their circumstances aremaybe out of the ordinary.

What do you think about the use of pictures in communication?!hey’re great - things like infographics can help e plain ideas and concepts ordisplay data in a much more accessible way for many people - pictures can also be

uicker in terms of getting a message across rather than ha ing to try and e plainall the details in words so that e eryone understands the same idea. 1ith a picturethere is less chance of misunderstanding.

How will communication chan#e in the future?1ell, I suppose there are a number of ways which we can already en isage on thehori$on. =oogle is launching its =lass which will change how people communicate.;ersonally, I think that we’ll adopt using oice messages more in the future asopposed to sending te t messages - simply because it’s uicker to record a uickmessage than te t someone. #ut if some smart person came up with a way ofsending picture messages - sort of like a super ad anced emoticon message - Iguess that would be probably be instantly popular with a lot of young people.

(nd of course there may be e en more ad anced technology introduced which wearen’t aware of at the moment - or it’s still in the ery early stages of beingde eloped. It’s a bit like trying to imagine a smartphone before cellular phones weree en in ented ? almost impossible to imagine the concept, but anything could be

    possible in the future.

Do you use a computer often?Yes, e ery day. @or work and pleasure. I use it as part of my studies and work at theuni ersity and I also use it for fun, sociali$ing and sur%ng on the internet, and nowI&m using it to chat with some of the other delgates we met in )ondon on my recenttrip. !hey come from di+erent uni ersities in countries all o er the world, so it&sgreat that we can chat online and share ideas..

What kind of thin#s do you use your computer for? (s I said, work, study, social. I& e bought things on the internet, I reser ed tickets for the theater once a couple of months ago. I use it to %nd information, send emails, watch ideos and many other things. /h, and of course, banking, although that is

0ust more recently, but I think it&s good.

I think it helped me de elop on a professional le el more than on a personal le el,although I did get a lot of opportunity to interact with di+erent people from ariousdi+erent countries and practice my "nglish a lot. #ut professionally it was erychallenging and ery interesting for me. It is the %rst international research pro0ect Iha e been in ol ed in so it was uite e citing as well.

(s I said, there were people from @rance, =ermany, the GH, the G*( and some othercountries. 1e used to ha e regular teleconferences to discuss the progress of the

pro0ect and any problems we encountered, share research results and information, and discuss possible solutions and areas of further in estigation. I was workingclosely with one of my senior professors here at the uni ersity who is erye perienced in this %eld of engineering.

Part !Do you like teamwork? $Why? / Why not?"Yes, I do. I think it is more interesting when arious people work together in a team. You can learn a lot more because di+erent peope ha e di+erent knowledge and alsoe perience. "specially when the people come from di+erent countries around theworls ? it can ake it ery interesting ? because they think in a di+erent way.

How does teamwork help?1ell, as I said, it can generate more creati ity and sharing of ideas which may nothappen otherwise. problems seem to get sol ed easier when they sre discussed in ateam, possibly because there are arious ways of approaching problem sol ing andsometimes ha ing a di+erent perspecti e, that of a nother person, is enough to seethe problem in a di+erent way, and e entually come up with a solution.

How does a #ood member of a team contribute to the team?1ell, I guess %rst of all, the most important thing they do is carry out their role tothe best of their ability. (nd as well as this, I’d say another thing that good team

players do is to help out other members of the team who might bestruggling withtheir work and falling behind. *o in other words, they’re not 0ust concerned with their own work, but that of the whole team.

Do you think children should de"elop skills for teamwork?Yes, I think this is why many parents spend alot of time telling their children that it isimportant to share thihgs with others. 1orking in a team re uires some skills, which

you ha e to learn, but they can be learned early in life as a child. *o i think it&s a

good idea that children are taught to work in teams to sol e problems. !hey shouldalso be encouraged to de elop their problem sol ing skills so that they can work ontheir own ? but teamwork is important in adult life, so yes, they should be taughthow to do it.

place to li e.Do you know your nei#hbours there?Yes, we ha e had the same neighbours for many years. I ha e known them since Iwas a small child. Is this place suitable for children? Why?I think it is. !here are many families who li e in the neighbourhood because it’s

recei ed two pieces of good ad ice from two di+erent people. /ne of them was myfather and the other was one of my teachers at school. My teacher told me that based on my abilities and academic performance I would

probably be good at sub0ects like economics or maybe mathematics. My father toldme that I should study something I am interested in, no matter what other peoplethink about my choice. I think that both of them ga e me good ad ice.

My teacher obser ed that I was ery good at analy$ing things and understanding

how di+erent things can inEuence each other. I was ery interested in economics atschool when we studied it because it in ol es many di+erent aspects of life, business, and social factors. *he, my teacher, said that I would probably %nd it moresatisfying to study something I was really interested in than try and do somethingthat was maybe more popular like something related to oil and gas or medicinewhich is uite popular for women here.

@inally, I decided to study "conomics because I like the sub0ect and because I knew Iwould be happy doing it. I’m almost %nished my course now and I ha e reallyen0oyed it so I think it was a good decision. :opefully, I will be able to get a good 0ob,

either here or abroad when I graduate. *o I guess you could say I followed thead ice from both people who ga e me it. I’m happy about my choice, and my fatherand teacher too.

Part !Do you usually listen to someone s ad"ice? It depends on the situation a lot. I mean, if it’s a serious situation and I ha e to makea big decision then usually I’ll ask people I think can help me for ad ice. If the ad iceseems to be good then I would certainly consider it.

Do you prefer to listen to your relati"es or friends ad"ice? Why? (gain, it depends. !here are some things my friends might ha e more e perience ofand therefore gi e better ad ice than my relati es. *ometimes they both ha e goodad ice… so I can’t say I always prefer to listen to one rather than the other. I usuallytry and talk to whoe er I think can gi e me the best ad ice based on the situation.

Who should #i"e youn# people ad"ice about their future career? Why?It’s a good idea for young people to listen to a ariety of ad ice from di+erentsources and then make up their own minds about what they want to do. !eachersand career counselors ha e more knowledge about careers and the employmentopportunities, but parents, relati es and friends also ha e a di+erent insight whichthey can o+er you… a more personal iewpoint sometimes. #ut at the end of theday, e eryone should make their own decision because it’s their career… they needto be happy doing what they choose.

Is it better to make important life decisions on your own or is it better toconsult other people?!here are good reasons for both, I suppose. It was in my %rst semester of study.*he is my professor for two classesJ marketing and logistics. You could also say that parent’s educate more by e ample, howthey do things and react to things whereas teachers teach children how to do thingsbased on a curriculum designed by educational e perts, it’s not such a personale perience.

What su##estions would you #i"e to teachers to impro"e education?I know when I was at school some of the sub0ects seemed ery uninteresting to us asstudents. I think maybe teachers need to look at how they relate the sub0ect matterto the real world or the student’s e perience of the real world. I know they are nowusing more technology in schools than before and this is a good thing. In general, students ha e to see that something is rele ant, or at least interesting, so ifteachers can make it ob ious why it’s important to learn something then maybestudents will be more interested.

It&s a matter of personalchoice. *ome people 0ust don&t like being outside in the country or doing this kind ofacti ity so there&s little point in tryin to encourage them to do something they aren&tinterested in. It&s nice if they are aware of the opportunity to try it ? but if they don&twant to then ok.

What do you consider to be the main disad"anta#e of such acti"ities?;ersonally, I don&t think there are any disad antages, e cept it might cost you somemoney. Most outdoor acti ities are healthy and many such as cycling or e en 0ustwalking do not re uire you to be super athletic or anythig like that, you can 0usten0oy being outside in the fresh air if you like that kind of thing.
