All smart forfour models come with an unusually extensive range of standardequipment to further enhance your driving pleasure. For example, the electricpower steering reduces steering effort without reducing the engine power.The central locking with remote control means you’ll never have to fumblearound with a key again. The rear seat bench can be moved backwards orforwards by 15 cm so that there’s always choice for more leg room or moreboot storage. Driveway illumination lights up the way to your smart forfour andwill accompany you all the way to your front door. And that’s not all, Electricwindows at the front, a height-adjustable steering wheel, a unique materialmix in the interior and the fabric-covered instrument panel – are all standardfeatures of the smart forfour. The optional 6-speed softouch plus automated transmission offers even greater comfort. Thistransmission is fitted with a kickdown function, enabling the driver to shift down a gear or twoautomatically using the accelerator. Which means your smart forfour is not only faster but safersince it allows the driver to take full advantage of safe overtaking opportunities. softouch plusalso comes with a crawl function, so in traffic jams you can creep along in gear without havingto touch the accelerator at all – which is also useful for parking and reversing. If you want toswitch into sporty mode simply tap the shift lever to the left, for manual gear changing.

If you like it sporty, you can order your smart forfour with softouch plus. The sporty multifunctional leathersteering wheel – which is available as an option – has paddles on the steering wheel which allow you to changegears without taking your hands off of the steering wheel.

Fans of petrol engines are spoilt for choice withfour state-of-the-art engines: There are two 3-cylinder engines with 64 bhp or 75 bhp, plustwo 4-cylinder engines with 95 bhp or 109 bhp.All engines in the smart forfour are front mounted.These engines are high in torque but low on fuelconsumption. Emission levels are also low, meaningthat the petrol engines conform to the stringentrequirements of exhaust gas standard EU4.

Lively petrol engines.Thanks to state-of-the-art cdi technology, both3-cylinder diesel engines with 68 bhp and 95 bhp,are powerful, smooth-running and economical at the same time. cdi stands for “common-raildirect injection” – an injection technology whichinvolves an ultra-modern high-pressure pumpgenerating a maximum pressure of 1,600 bar inthe common fuel line and injection nozzles. Aswell as this, an electronic control ensures thatprecisely regulated amounts of fuel are injecteddirectly into the combustion chamber. Both cdiengines are high in torque, but are also remarkablylow in emissions and comply with exhaust gasstandard EU4.

The smart forfour’s complex safety system sets newstandards in quality that go far beyond the legalrequirements.The all-round passive safety offered by the tridionsafety cell, the collapsible steering column, full-size airbags, side airbags for driver and passengerand the three-point belt systems ensure maximumprotection should it be needed. However, beforeanything untoward happens, the active damageprevention system intervenes. The electronicstability programme (esp®) will swiftly intervene if its sensors detect that your smart forfour is indanger of swerving. The sensors detect certaindangerous situations early on – for instance if therear of the vehicle threatens to break away in abend. esp® immediately reduces the engine torqueand selectively brakes one or more individualwheels to stabilise your smart forfour.The hydraulic brake assist function also makes a decisive contribution to driving safety. Itautomatically initiates controlled emergencybraking when you step on the pedal quickly but not firmly enough, so that you don’t lose anybraking distance.esp® also includes the anti-lock braking system(abs) with electronic brake-force distribution. In critical situations, this function allows you tosteer around obstacles even during heavybraking.

The tridion safety cell.

1. In a frontal impact the belt tensioners will reduceany slack. 2. In a serious collision the airbags aretriggered and inflate to form a protective system in amatter of milliseconds. The belt force limiter carefullyreleases more belt before too much pressure is exertedon the chest. 3. The collapsible steering column retracts

telescopically in the event of a front-end collision. Inthe event of a side impact, the standard side airbag –integrated in the seat backrest – inflates on the side ofimpact. Additional window bags are also available foryour smart forfour as an option.

The smart forfour BRABUSThe smart forfour BRABUS is exclusively availablein two colour combinations: jack black bodypanelswith a black tridion or starlight silver metallicbodypanels with a silver tridion.

The bodypanels.

The body components, also known as “bodypanels”, are made of high-quality, scratch-resistant plastic. They areavailable in four non-metallic colours (graphite blue, ice white, jack black, phat red,) and five metallic colours (baygrey metallic, flame red metallic, melon green metallic, star blue metallic, starlight silver metallic). Their low weightcontributes to the smart forfour’s excellent power/weight ratio resulting in better performance and lower fuel

consumption. All bodypanels are fully replaceable and recyclable, do not rust and are robust enough to withstandlight bumps virtually unscathed. Should a bodypanel sustain major damage, the modular bolt-on bolt-off designmeans that it can be easily replaced without the need for expensive repainting in a bodyshop. The bodypanel systemis an innovation exclusive to smart.

Despite its compact dimensions, the smart forfour can hold far more than youmight think at first glance. Depending on whether you need more storage spacefor luggage or if your rear seat passengers want to stretch their legs, you canmove the rear bench backwards or forwards (by up to 15 centimetres) to suityour requirements. Your rear seat passengers are sure to feel at home withthe lounge concept; they can relax on a “sofa” with fabric-covered lounge

cushions between the door and the backrest. The backrest of the rear seatbench can be folded down, which is particularly useful if you want to transportbulky items. Depending on the position of the rear seat bench, the capacity ofthe luggage compartment ranges from 268 to 330 litres. If you go one stepfurther and fold up the seat bench behind the front seats, you’ll have no lessthan 910 litres of space for all your transporting needs. The backrests of the

rear seat bench can also be folded down separately. The rear bench is alsoavailable with three seats as an option (see picture). This extra seat is thenalso equipped with a headrest and a three-point belt system. As well as this,you can opt for a centre armrest which is integrated into the backrest.
