Objective – Assignee Landscape

Preliminary survey of the Smart Grid assignee landscape and first-cut identification of patent asset holders in Smart Grid technology.

Workflow

1. A search is done using Relecura to identify a superset of patents related to Smart Grid technologies in all geographies using appropriate

keywords and IPC Codes connected with the various sub-technologies.

2. The results prior to 1993 are removed and the resulting set is grouped by application number. This set has been further analyzed.

3. The top IPC codes filed for patents under each related sub-technology are summarized.

4. The patent asset holders in Smart Grid technology are identified after combining the assets from the various sub-technologies.

5. The top patent asset holders in individual sub-technologies are given.

Smart Grid sub-technologies included in this analysis

1. Integrated Communication

2. Software

3. Smart Meters

4. Sensing

5. Substation Automation

6. Distribution Automation

7. Demand Response

8. Security

9. Advanced Transmission

10. Vehicle-to-Grid Charging Infrastructure

11. Integration of power generation technologies

12. Other technologies

Objective – Potential Licensees / Potential Acquisition Targets

Identification of potential licensees and the potential acquisition targets for patents addressing each of the sub-technologies related to Smart

Grids.

Workflow

1. Companies identified as Potential Licensees are those that have an active filing history of patents with a priority date of 2008 or later (all

geographies).

2. Companies identified as Potential Acquisition Targets are typically small or medium size companies holding US grants with a priority date

of 2008 or earlier.

3. The patents held by the Potential Acquisition Targets have not been verified for enforceability status (i.e. whether they have expired or

have been abandoned)

4. The number of US grants given against each Potential Acquisition Target is indicative. A more comprehensive search is required to

identify all the US patent assets held by the listed companies.

Executive Summary Contd.

Ways in which the current study could be extended

1. More comprehensive mining and cleaning up to determine all patent assets in this technology area.

2. More comprehensive mining to determine patent assets held by individual companies.

3. Including additional sub-technologies as appropriate.

4. Including additional relevant IPC codes as appropriate.

5. Scrubbing of patent assets held by each assignee for enforceability (expired/abandoned).

6. Study of transaction data to get additional leads on potential licensees and acquisition targets.

Objective

Preliminary survey of the Smart Grid IP landscape and a first cut identification of patent asset holders in this technology for possible IP

acquisition.

Workflow

1. A search is done using Relecura to identify a superset of patents related to Smart Grid technology using different keywords

connected with the various sub-technologies related to Smart Grid technology.

2. The top IPC codes for filings in the 2008-2012 period are identified.

3. In addition, patents from the 2002-2007 period for the same top IPC codes are identified.

4. Patent holders of assets in (2 + 3) are listed.

5. Potential acquisition targets are identified within the above list.

6. The analysis is restricted to US granted patents.

Smart Grid sub-technologies included in this analysis

1. Integrated Communication and Software

2. Smart Meters

3. Sensing

4. Substation Automation

5. Distribution Automation

6. Demand Response

7. Security

8. Advanced Transmission

9. Vehicle-to-Grid Charging Infrastructure

10. Integration of power generation technologies
