SMART CITIES: PROSPECTS AND CHALLENGES (WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO INDIA) Abstract SHOBHIT SRIVASTAVA E-mail id [email protected] ALATAMASH KHAN E-mail id [email protected] CENTER FOR GLOBALIZTION AND DEVELOPMENT STUDIES UNIVERSITY OF ALLAHABAD, ALLAHABAD, INDIA. India the 2 nd most populous city of the world with the population of 1.25 billion (2013) is moving towards rapid urbanization and technological development. About 31% of its population is urban which is very low in comparison to other developing countries for.eg.45 per cent in China, 54 per cent in Indonesia, 78 per cent in Mexico and 87 per cent in Brazil. It is estimated that by 2031 India 600 million people will reside in urban areas. So to fulfill huge needs of urban population and to provide basic infrastructure:- housing for all, safe drinking water, transportation facilities, and communication etc Govt. of India has launched the Smart city mission in India. Government of India has launched 3 programs for urban development India: 1. 100 smart cities 2. AMRUT ( ATAL MISSION FOR REJUVENATION AND URBAN TRANSFORMATION) 3. Housing for all In this paper we will largely focus on prospects and challenges of smart cities with special reference to India and we will have a critical analysis on smart city mission and other schemes of urban development launched by GOI earlier. Some cases study related to urban development will also be discussed. Key words: smart city, urban development, case studies, urban development schemes.
