Welcome, Mustang families, this is the new principal, Casey Browne for Arleta High School. I have been in this education profession for 36 years now. I spent 26 years at North Holly-wood High as an SDC Special Ed teacher, athletic coach, coaching football , track and field and JV baseball. I was also the Athletic Director, Dean and Title 1 Coordinator within those 26 years. I was pro-moted to Assistant Principal at Sylmar High School where I spent 6 years and then was placed at Arleta at Dr. Calvo's request 5 years ago. I have been very blessed to work in a profession that allows us the privilege to be able to make a significant difference in the lives of young people. I be-lieve it is our mission as part of the human experience to do all we can to help others attain their potential in life. Teaching affords us that opportunity. I attended CSU Northridge and and earned my teaching credential and Bachelor's degree. I earned my Master's degree in Educational Administration from CSU Dominquez Hills. My goals for Arleta is to continue to move Arleta forward as a distinguish
school. For our students, I want them to dream. I want them to dream big. Dreaming allows people to set goals. Through hard work and sacrifice most people catch most of their dreams. I grew up very poor and I remember dreaming about what I wanted my life to be as an adult. I too worked hard and sacri-ficed and I now live a wonderful life. Many of the dreams I had, I caught. I want our students to fully understand their potential and with our support, and
their hard work will fulfill their potential and dreams. I also want our students to understand and believe in their mission as human beings to promote kind-ness and consideration for oth-ers. As part of the human expe-rience, our students must partici-pate in "random acts of kind-ness" toward others. Our world is far too violent and we need our youth to help make their world safer and kinder. We will work hard this year to promote
kindness and consideration for others in need.
Thank you again for working with us to ensure your child’s success.
Sincerely, Casey Browne Principal
MESSAGES FROM OUR PRINCIPALS
Hi, I am Ms. Saucedo, proud assistant principal of SMART. I have been at Arleta High School since it opened in October of 2006. I was born in Guadalaja-ra, Jalisco, Mexico and I am the oldest of a family of six children.
I came to the United States when I was seventeen years old and attended Mon-roe High School for two years. After high school I attended Los Angeles Val-ley College and transferred to CSUN, where I earned a Bachelor Degree in Mathematics and my teaching creden-tial. After a few years, I went back to school to obtain a Master Degree in Education Administration, which al-lowed me to be an assistant principal, and I am cur-rently enrolled at California Lutheran University work-
ing on becoming a Doctor in Educational Leadership, which I will complete by May of 2017.
Besides going to school, which I enjoy very much,
growing up I also enjoyed playing piano and guitar,
singing, and dancing folklorico. At the
moment I love learning, thinking, and
working at Arleta High School where I
can make a difference in people’s lives.
Sincerely, Ana Saucedo Assistant Principal (S.M.A.R.T)

Math and Science Jokes
Q: Why do mathematicians like parks?
A: Because of all the natural logs.
Q: What do you call a number that can’t keep still?
A: A roamin’ numeral.
Q: Did you hear about the mathematician who’s afraid
of negative numbers?
A: He will stop at nothing to avoid them.
The House Problem:
A physicist, a biologist and a mathematician are sitting
on a bench, watching people entering and leaving the
house on the other side of the street. First they see two
people enter the house; A while later, they watch three
people leave the house.
The physicist says, “The initial measurement wasn’t
accurate.”
The biologist counters, “They must have reproduced.”
Finally, the mathematician suggests, “If one more per-
son enters the house, then it will
be empty again.”
LAUSD Service Learning Graduation Requirement
According to LAUSD Service Learning is “ a teaching/learning strategy in which
students learn and develop through active participation in high quality service that
meets the needs of a community. Service Learning strategies integrate into and en-
hance the rigorous academic curriculum. Service Learning is aligned with the state
standards, fosters civic responsibility, and provides structured time for student reflection.”
In order to earn a diploma, all students must participate in a service learning project
In order to provide all students with the opportunity to fulfill the Service Learning
requirement, teachers offer Service Learning projects in their classes.
Service Learning Opportunities include:
Day of The Dead (Dia De Los Muertos)

WRITE A SECRET MESSAGE TO A FRIEND
Do you want to write your password down so that no
one can see it, or do you want to send someone a
secret message? Knowing how to make an invisible
ink message will make you feel like a secret agent in
no time.
The first 3 students showing their revealed message
to Ms. Dorbritz in B114 will receive a prize.
Here are a few recipes to make visible ink.
INVISIBLE INK THE BAKING SO-
DA WAY Mix about 1/4 cup (60 ml) of bak-
ing soda and 1/4 cup (60 ml) of
water. Next, write using a Q-
tip, toothpick or brush on a piece of
paper. Let it dry completely. To
read the secret message, paint grape juice concen-
trate across the paper with apaint brush or a sponge.
Don't forget - grape juice stains.
Why it works: Grape juice has an acid that reacts with
the baking soda. A different color appears wherever
the secret message is written.
INVISIBLE INK THE MILKY WAY
Put a little milk in a small bowl. Write with the milk on
a piece of paper with a Q-tip or a brush. Let your
message dry completely. To read the message, just
heat the paper. Use an iron or 100-watt light bulb.
Don't rest the paper on the bulb. Ask an adult to help
in case a fire starts and never use a halogen light.
Why it works: Milk is an organic product which means
it comes from a living thing. When it's heated, it burns
at a slower rate than the paper. Your invisible mes-
sage shows up brown.
INVISIBLE INK THE LEMON WAY
This works the same way as the Milky Way. Simply
dab a Q-tip or brush into a bowl of lemon juice and
write away. Just make sure you don't use too much.
To see the message, simply heat the paper after it
dries. Another way to see the message is put salt on
the drying ink. Give it a minute and then
wipe the salt off. Use a wax crayon to
color over the message.
Why it works: Both lemon juice and milk
are mildly acidic and acid weakens pa-
per. The acid remains in the paper after
the juice or milk has dried. When the pa-
per is held near heat the acidic parts of
the paper burn or turn brown before the
rest of the paper does.
These are only a few ways to make invisible ink. Us-
ing the same heat method, you can also use white
wine, vinegar, apple juice, and even orange juice, to
name just a few. Try some other fruit juices to
see what works.
