The Commander’s Message Cdr. Daniel S. Fannon, AP
A warm breeze that began in the mountains to the southwest and, after having navigated the turns in the canyons of the Hudson River Highlands, has reached my office window and found its gentle way to the desk from which I write. The docks of the marina where I keep the Melodic in summer are full, the New Hamburg Yacht Club just down the hill where James Roosevelt, Franklin’s father raced his ice boat Jack Frost in 1890 is alive with promise and activity. The scent of lilac and a freshly-cut lawn fill my hillside garden. The season has arrived. Winter is past, and the joy of being on the water and the companionship of our beloved boats is once again ours for the living.
During the cold months, our time together at Bayside is centered on education, meetings, and fellowship. What a Winter we have had. So many great meetings, informed discussions, first-rate presentations, District awards and honors come our way, a full complement of classes led by the finest instructors in the USPS, elegant parties, and enough fine food to make Jenny Craig faint.
During these coming months, the time we spend together moves to the water with raft ups, a Safety Week presentation at the Bayside Marina, the District Rendezvous in July, and ongoing events that keep us close to our boats and to each other. We are ever grateful for our Squadron, for the deep friendships we enjoy, and for the privilege of navigating the waters of New York State at the helm of our own vessels.
Now is the time for warmth and wonder. Now is the time to listen to our beloved boats that call to us in the words of the Song of Solomon:
My beloved spake, and said unto me, Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come
away. For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone;
The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the
voice of the turtle is heard in our land;
The fig tree putteth forth her green figs, and the vines with the tender grape give
a good smell.
Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.
May the winds be fair, the seas kind, and all your journeys safe,
Dan

I am your newly elected Squadron Education Officer. I would first like to thank my predecessor, Sean
Donohoe, for the excellent job he did over the last 4 years. I would also like to thank the Bayside Bridge
for the award I received at the Change of Watch on 5-01-17 for dedicated service to the Bayside Power
Squadron. As most of you know, I enjoy educating my fellow boaters on problems we may encounter
while enjoying our boating activities; hence, the Interactive Discussions we have at many of our
meetings has helped to serve that purpose.
We recently completed 2 of the 3 Marine Electronic elective courses this spring; i.e. Marine
Electronics and Electronic Navigation. We had 16 students in the Marine Electronics course, all of
whom passed. We are awaiting the results of the final exam for the Electronic Navigation course. I
would like to thank Gene Molteni, SN for his assistance and Sharon Molteni, SN for handling the
paperwork in both these courses. We are continuing our elective course offerings with Cruise Planning
which began on 5-16-17 at the Williamsburg Yacht Club in College Point. The course instructor is Guy
Anastasio, SN who has a long history of teaching many courses for Bayside and especially for the Cruise
Planning course. We currently have 11 students taking this course.
I would like to congratulate Branko Kleva and Antonio Suarez for passing the ABC basic boating
course given by Sean Donohoe, SN. Sean is also starting another ABC course at the Williamsburg Yacht
Club in College Point. This is a 4 week course meeting every Thursday starting 6-01-17. If you know
anyone who wants to take this course and obtain a Boating Safety Certificate which is recognized by the
U.S. Coast Guard and has been approved by the State of NY and the National Association of State
Boating Administrators (NASBLA), please call Sean at 718-565-7952. Passing this course also can
entitle you to a reduction on your boat insurance.
I look forward to seeing many of my fellow boaters on the water this summer. Check this newsletter
for the opportunities to raft up and please join us at the District 3 rendezvous in Greenport.

When my boat is out of the water for repairs or its annual painting and
varnishing, my mind goes back to that July afternoon in 2003 when I saw her
for the first time on the stands in a marina shed in Point Pleasant, New
Jersey. She was to be my first (and most likely only) boat, and that afternoon, a
very unknowledgeable Dan Fannon scrambled aboard this 1936 vessel to decide
if she and I had a future. Well, you know what happened. Fools rush in. The
romance of a wood boat overtook me, and now 14 years later, we are readying for
yet another dance on Long Island Sound and the Hudson River.
What I remember in examining the underbelly of the Melodic that first time was
how simple an idea a boat really is -- just keep the water on the OUTside of the
hull, and you’re ahead of the game. But then, as I prepared to actually put her to use and explore the water, I understood
how complex a boat really is if you are going to keep it and yourself safe. The good news is that what it takes to have a
trustworthy boat is no mystery, and it starts with making sure that your craft is seaworthy and fully in shape to take
whatever winds and water lie ahead. Before she leaves her winter stands, it is mandatory to make a thorough, exhausted
review of every part of the hull, engine, and mechanics to make sure that it all is in perfect working order.
Here’s a simple checklist:
Examine every inch of the hull to confirm that there are no soft spots or areas that could cause a leak or strain on the
structure. With a wood boat, make sure that all the seams are caulked tight and that there are no decaying planks or
(worse) loose fasteners. Never patch – only rebuild.
Check all through-hulls to make sure that they are working perfectly and show no signs of failure. If there’s ANY
doubt - don’t repair, REPLACE
Rudder – never assume that it needs little attention. Check for stress cracks or any mechanical concerns.
Engine & electrical: reactivate all systems and look for any operational issues that occur. Before heading out on that
first trip, make a test run at all speeds (staying close to the marina) to put the engine and all onboard systems through
their paces to see if anything still needs work.
Safety Equipment: fire extinguishers, flares, VHF and communications, life jackets, a first-aid kit all need to be kept
up-to-date.
On my way back to the Hudson from Mattituck and the 2015 D3 Rendezvous, I stopped mid-channel on the Sound to make
a fresh pot of coffee. As I sat in the aft cockpit for a few minutes to enjoy the sun and the roll of the water, I realized just
how vulnerable I really was. I was floating miles from either the New York or the Connecticut coast surrounded by deep
salt water. If I got into trouble, help would be on the way, but the immediate reality was that the Melodic and I were very
much alone and dependent on each other to be safe. I reminded myself that from that first time with her in 2003 and in all
the years since, I have done my best to maintain this boat and refine my skills as a navigator. That’s no guarantee that all
will be well, but It was a comfort to know that
Being Safe on the Water is No Accident.

Here we are in our 81st Year and our 81st Anniversary is on the horizon in November. The Change of Watch on
May 1st was great …great people, great fun and great food and desserts. Not only that, it was on time. You can ask
anyone. Lt/C Gil Allen, SN received an award recognizing his dedicated service to the squadron in 2016 – 2017. Gil
provided many insights, ideas and questions as he led his Interactive Discussions at our meetings. He made these
discussions into mini-seminars, which began as personal boating challenges. In addition to his discussions, he was
instructing large classes in Marine Electronics and more.
We wish Cdr. Dan Fannon along with the Bayside Bridge another fabulous year. This is Dan’s second year as
commander and is a proud member of the “Seafaring Frenz”.
In May, we had a picnic with the Oyster Bay Squadron in Glenwood Landing. This was another cool/cold kick-off to
our spring/summer activities. However, we made it through. There is always wonderful food and lots of fun. Of
course, the sun came out as we were leaving.
We also participated in a Ready, Set, Wear It Event on Saturday, 20 May, which was the beginning of Safe
Boating Week. It was held at the Bayside Marina. Wearing the proper Life Preserver was demonstrated along with
other safe boating skills. Many brochures were distributed.
Welcome our new members:
Louis Bauer Sarah Cirker Gabriel Cirker
Elaine Bauer. Madeline Cirker Leah Cirker
We’re happy to have them aboard.
Our summer activities include another ABC III class, which will start on Thursday, 1 June and be held on three
additional Thursdays at the Williamsburgh Yacht Club in College Point. Tell your friends to sign up. This will be our
last class until September.
In addition, there will be raft-ups on 9 July in Little Neck Bay and on 20 August in Manhasset Bay. Let’s not
forget our District 3 Rendezvous in Greenport, which is always a terrific weekend (see pages 12 to 14 for details).
These are some of the benefits of membership. Of course, the Governing Board meeting in Dallas, Texas this
September will be another winner. The Ensign and on-line reminders will keep you informed on that. I’m sure you
have been enjoying the pictures, articles and flyers in the Running Lights and the same items posted by P/C John
Listner on our Face book page. But, don’t forget our Website, which is also keeping us up to date thanks to P/C Tom
Biglin.
Have a Great Summer! Hope to see you at many events…Give me a call.

It is all over now and it only took three months. All the Seafaring commanders have been sworn in and District 3
is now on course for another year of fun and education. Congratulations to all the squadron commanders,
especially our own Dan Fannon and his bridge officers who were sworn in last month. I certainly hope he gets to
use his boat this year.
As many of you know, it is customary for the squadron commander to give gifts to his bridge officers for their work
over the past year. Dan got each of us a nautical tote bag. In the bag was another gift that was wrapped. When I
unwrapped it, I was somewhat confused because I had no idea what it was. I spent hours trying to figure out what
it was and then finally decided to google it. To my surprise, it was a book. I didn’t know they still made those.
Dan is so old fashioned but then again he does own a wooden boat. And, no it was not a book about catching fish.
I’m sure Dan knows not to waste money on a book like that for me. The book is entitled “A Treasury of Irish Fairy
and Folk Tales.” If you thought it was difficult understanding someone with an Irish brogue, try reading a story
that is written in an Irish brogue. This book is a collection of short stories by various authors and you know the
Irish are great storytellers. I think the very first Irish folk story started with the words, “I caught a fish this
big…” Many of the stories are about fairies, witches and ghosts. One story is entitled, “The Legend of
O’Donoghue.” Even though it is a different spelling than my name, it is still part of the same clan. Now there’s
proof that I am not just a legend in my own mind. There is one story that talks about the fairies and it seems to
describe the members of District 3. One line reads, “Their chief occupations are feasting, fighting, and making
love, and
playing the most beautiful music.” You may wonder where the fighting comes in. The next line in the story is,
“They have only one industrious person amongst them…” and in my opinion, that one industrious person is the
district flag lieutenant. He or she seems to do the most work in the district and of course, this is usually when the
fighting starts. For some reason I have a soft spot for flag lieutenants. It then talks about how the fairies have
three great festivals throughout the year. For us that would be the Spring Conference, the Fall Educational
Conference and of course Rendezvous East. So, now you know – we are just a bunch of Irish fairies. I guess it is
better than being a bunch of Irish ghosts.
Once again, a few squadrons got together for our annual multi-squadron picnic and once again, the weather was
terrible. Cold, wind and rain seem to be the norm for our picnic. I think it is time to move the picnic to June or
move it to Florida – I vote for Florida. There was plenty of food and friends but unfortunately, there was more
food than friends. Attendance has been dropping over the years and I am sure Mother Nature is to blame. On the
bright side…the weather was good for Bayside’s safety demonstration at the Bayside Marina on Saturday 20 May
and the Ducks game on Sunday 21 May but I won’t bet the farm.
The squadron and the district have a lot of events planned for the summer and I hope you are able to join us for
the fun. There is sure to be something for everyone since these events are planned for both land and sea. We
started on land with the picnic and baseball game last month. Next month, we will put to sea with a raft-up on
Little Neck Bay to officially induct our new members. After that we have a combination land and sea event since
we will be going to Greenport for Rendezvous East. If you plan on staying overnight, you should make your
reservations quickly because many hotels are already booked. Our popular north shore raft-up on Manhasset Bay
will be in August. The summer activities will conclude in September in Dallas, Texas for the governing board
meeting, which unfortunately, I will not be able to attend. I will just have to regroup for the meeting in
Minneapolis, Minnesota in 2018.
On that note, I wish everyone a safe and fun filled summer that is heat wave free. And to all the fathers,
grandfathers and godfathers out there – Happy Father’s Day!
