Did you know thatCinco de Mayo means the fifth of May.Many people believe it is MexicosIndependence Day, but that is incorrect.(Mexicos Independence Day is September 16.)Rather, Cinco de Mayo is the anniversary of abattle that took place between the Mexicansand the French in 1862.The battle is known as the Battle of Puebla, and it celebrates Mexicos victory over theFrench. It also marks a turning point inMexican national pride. A small, poorly armedgroup of about 4,500 men were able to stopthe French invasion of a well-equipped Frencharmy that had about 6,500 or even 8,000soldiers. The victory made the Mexican peoplevery happy, and helped create a feeling ofnational unity.
While Cinco de Mayo is a national holiday inMexico, it is mainly observed in the statecapital of Puebla. However, in the UnitedStates, it is becoming a popular holiday tocelebrate Mexican culture. Kids and familiescan try delicious Mexican food, listen anddance to Mexican music, make and admireMexican art, and shop for fun souvenirsand products at markets calledMercado.
The population of Mexico is more than106 million. The Mexican flag is green, white andred. The traditional meaning of the colorsis thought to be that green stands for hopeand the independence movement; whitefor purity and religion and red for Spainand union. The emblem in the middleconsists of an eagle and a snake, based onan Aztec legend.
SPOTLIGHT
This month we are putting
our spotlight on Ms. Joann.
Ms. Joann is a person who
has always demonstrated an
excellent work ethic. She is
always on time and comes in
even when she doesnt feel
well. She has always been
conscientious of how
important her role in the
center is. In the seven years
she has been with us she hasalways been friendly,
courteous, and welcoming to
all of the families. When she
happens to take a vacation,
the children are very sad that
she is not there to say hello.
Everyone in the center
loves her including the
staff. We are very
appreciative of all that she
does for us.
