LIFE AT SILVER LAKEIt’s my first time at camp!

Welcome! We’re glad you’re here! And you will not be the only one here for the first time (even if you’re in high school). Our conferees (campers) tell us they make new friends on the very first day of camp, every year. You’re in for a week of outdoor fun with a whole conference (your camp group) full of new friends.

A typical dayA day at camp is very busy, full of games, crafts, swimming, singing, and campfires. And you’ll have quiet time after lunch to read, write letters home, or even take a nap. You will have the chance to meet God in a very unique setting. Your conference will lead worship one night. You and your new friends will pick the songs, stories, poems, prayers, dances, and sometimes silliness that add up to a truly engaging worship service.

The camp experienceWhile a lot of your group’s activity will center on your theme, all conferences are camp experiences first: You will live at camp, eat in the Social Hall with the other conferences, swim in the lake, have the opportunity to check out the high and low ropes courses, dig around in the garden, or sit around a campfire. Also, each conference takes turns leading all-camp worship one night of the week.

For more information about what to expect at camp, visit our website at www.silverlakect.org/summercamp.

I am excited you are coming to Silver Lake as a part of your summer! It is a joy to be a part of this life-transforming ministry. We are excited to welcome you to our

incredible camp, where you will meet others from all over New England and beyond while making lifelong friends. You will be

received and welcomed just as you are. And you will have a ton fun doing all the great camp things: singing, swimming, art, s’mores, worship, games, ropes, great food.

We are especially excited about the fun we will have with two new wonderful features at camp. First, we have added a disc golf course that takes players through the heart of camp. Disc golf is like traditional golf but way more accessible and more fun. It is great!

Second is our brand new High Ropes Adventure course, where you can challenge yourself with the support of all the new friends you’ve made. We have several elements that can only be completed with the help of your team. Early polling indicates the new course is a blast.

At Silver Lake this summer, you will have incredible new experiences, grow in faith, and know you are loved by God just as you are. Join us for a life-changing week!

New Adventures For You This Summer

Silver Lake Conference Center Mission Statement

Silver Lake Conference Center, a year round outdoor ministry of the Connecticut Conference of the United Church of Christ, is called to covenant with God and with the churches and people of the conference in the work of forming life-sustaining leaders for the church and the world, by offering:

• Experiences of inclusive and nurturing Christian community

• Opportunities to grow and participate as Christ’s disciples

• A model of sustainable environmental stewardship of God’s world.

We worship, learn, play, serve, and work together, respecting the right of private judgement. We seek to provide a safe environment of acceptance regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation, reflecting our unity in Christ and respecting the faith journeys of all of God’s children.

Silver Lake staff, counselors, and deans are ready to introduce you to camp! Take a tour on foot or hop on the hayride. See the cabins and other buildings, find out where the Freds (bathrooms) are, and check out the ropes courses and the waterfront.

A visit to Silver Lake before camp is the best way for a first-time camper (conferee) to know what to expect — you might even run into a new friend who will be in the same conference this summer! We’ll provide the cookies, you bring your questions. See you there!

RSVP for Open House to [email protected] by May 14.

EMBODYING GOD’S LOVE IN THE WORLDAt Silver Lake, all of our

programming focuses on bringing God’s love and justice into the world. We gather young people in intentional community and teach them how to love one another. Our justice programming stems from this core tenant: Love one another as God loves you.

While all our summer conferences promote the UCC’s justice ministries, some take a more intentional dive into real world issues. We are thrilled to offer three conferences this summer that examine issues of racial justice: Stepping Stones and Welcome to

Wakanda for middle school youth and Stepping Up for high school youth.

Silver Lake takes seriously God’s call to be good stewards of the earth, both through the Garden Program that most conferences take part in, and through sustainability initiatives around camp, from composting at meals to the renovation of one of our winterized buildings, the Lodge, to meet Passive House standards. Two conferences this summer will focus on issues of water justice: Water World for 5th & 6th graders and River of Dreams for 8th-10th graders.

Young people also explore

the impact of economic injustice through mission trips with Simply Smiles in Mexico and HOME Co-op in Maine.

And they can join Youth @ Synod to see justice in action at the General Synod of the United Church of Christ this summer in Milwaukee. Learn more at www.ctucc.org.

Most of all, we strive to offer an extravagant welcome to everyone who comes to Silver Lake, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, or sexual orientation, spreading God’s love to all.

—Jennifer Kronholm Clark, Program Director
