The 105–boat fleet wasbarely back on thebeach in Barbados

when the news broke inWicklow that MacCarthyand sailmaker Davis haddone enough for one ofthe most coveted UK andWorld dinghy titles. TheWicklow crew outwitted anumber of multi–worldchampions to seize thetrophy, Ireland’s first GP14World Title win since 1991.

Boyle told Afloat.ie: ‘Thisis a fantastic result for Irishdinghy sailing and theGP14 Class in particular. The GP14 WorldChampionship epitomiseswhat small boat racing isabout; large scaleparticipation, racing for allages and levels, and razorsharp competition at the

top end. We areabsolutely delighted thatShane and Andy havebrought the world titleback to Ireland’.

While the othercontenders for the titlewon individual racesMacCarthy, the current UKand Irish Champion, saileda very consistent seriesand was never outside thetop three for the durationof the event. Moving intothe latter part ofchampionship with fourraces to go over Sunday &Monday, MacCarthy &Davis were tied in secondplace with British pair IanDobson & Andy Tunnicliffeon 15 points, both twopoints adrift of the leadersCraig and Lewis of GreatBritain on 13 points.

MacCarthy and Davisare the fourth Irish nameson to the Worlds trophyand the first from theRepublic. The FekkesBrothers from Larne inCounty Antrim last won itin 1991 and Bill Whiskerand Jimmy McKee fromBallyholme in CountyDown were winners in1975.  Andy Thompson, also from Larne, woncrewing with RichardEstaugh at the helm inDurban 2000.

The massivechampionship was hotlycontested with the Irishpair prevailing over a starstudded field whichincluded reigning five timeGP14 World ChampionsDobson & Tunnicliffe, former World ChampionNeil Marsden, former UKNational Champion MikeSenior and multi classWorld and EuropeanChampion Nick Craigsailing with Toby Lewis andwidely recognised asBritain’s most successfulamateur sailor.

22 crews from Ireland, two from Sligo travelled tocompete in the eventwhich attractedcompetitors from Sri Lanka,North America, Australia,Barbados and UnitedKingdom.

Sunday proved decisivewith MacCarthy & Davismaking their bid for thetitle scoring a 1st and 2ndfor the day to catapultthem into the lead fourpoints ahead of Dobson &Tunnicliffe with Craig &Lewis slipping back tothird. It was still all to playfor heading into Mondaywith two races to sail and4 points separating thethree crews who couldwin the prestigious worldtitle but MacCarthy &Davis wrapped it up inRace 9 finishing second toCraig & Lewis with Dobson& Tunnicliffe forced backinto 3rd. This is a first Irishwin in this prestigious eventsince the Fekkes brothersin 1991.

John & DonalMcGuinness (Moville SC) in12th were next best Irish, followed by Lough Erne’sJP & Carolyn McCaldin in14th with Sligo YC KeithLouden & Alan Thompsonin 20th.  Brenda Prestonwith crew Steven Prestontook home the hotlycontested Lady Helm prizeby only 1 point.

The GP14 is one ofIreland’s most popular twoperson racing dinghyclasses and regularlyattracts fleets of 40-50+boats.

PRO ZARAUTZ LAUNCHES INPUNCHY, ONSHORE PEAKS

The inaugural ProZarautz launched in three-to-four foot surf with light onshore

wind, providing a great play fieldfor some of Europe’s best surfers toperform.

France’s Marc Lacomare, 25, puton an absolute clinic, attacking theclean afternoon peaks withamazing power and flow on hisbackhand. The Frenchman beltedtwo massive scores on his final twoefforts and clinched a near-perfect18.97 heat total, the highest of theevent so far.

“Waves were fun, you just had tofind the right two,” Lacomare said.“It’s always great to have events inyour own region, even thoughwe’re not exactly home, it’s still veryclose and I like being able to gohome at the end of the day, sleepwell and come back the nextmorning. I haven’t had the best ofstarts in Australia this season, but Ifeel great so I’m hoping things will

turn around.”Sligo man Gearoid McDaid

finished a very respectable top 13in his first qs zarautz pro event of theseason.

He competed against the moreseasoned competitor’s and gotthrough a couple of heats but waseventually knocked out of thecompetition.

Not bad for a lone Irish mantraveling around on his own.

Coming off an excellent ninthplace at the Australian Open ofSurfing, perennial QSthreatJonathan Gonzalez (CNY),35, confirmed his great form inZarautz. The Canary Island surfernailed two clean carves on a right-hander for an 8.90 early on, anddespite having a hard time findinganother good ride, managed tosteal the lead and eventually takefirst place.

“I’ve come here a few days earlyand have been training a lot,”

Gonzalez commented. “Conditionslook good for the weekend, sohopefully that sandbank stays putand we can continue to surf thatright. There are a lot of great surfershere so it’s going to be a toughevent but I’m having fun and I lookforward to surfing more heats outthere.”

Vicente Romero (ESP), 23,rounded up the day’s action in thelate afternoon setting sun, with asolid display of performance surfingto launch his campaign in theBasque Country.

“Wave selection was really trickybut luckily I was patient and waitedwith first priority until I found a reallygood one,” Romero explained. “Igot that 7.50 in the end and madeit through so I’m super happy. I’vecompeted here in Zarautz for along time and I feel completelycomfortable so I hope I cancontinue to win heats and havefun.”

Rowing is a sport withorigin’s back to ancientEgyptian times. A sport

based on propelling a boatforward on water using oars. It’sa sport that focuses on learningthe technique of rowing, whereathletes race against eachother in the boats. There are anumber of different boatclasses in which athletes cancompete, ranging from anindividual boat (a single scull)

to an eight person boat with acoxswain – a coxed eight.Modern rowing as acompetitive sport can betraced to the early 18thcentury, when races were heldbetween professionalwatermen on the River Thamesin London. It is also one of theoldest Olympic sports; it’s beenon the Olympic Programmesince 1896 and is highlyregarded as one of thetoughest physical sports onoffer. It’s also quite tactical and

somewhat of an art. Good toexcellent competitive rowingrequires precision timing, discipline, skill, technique andthe shrewdest of minds – and ifworking as part of a pair orteam of four or eight then itrequires all of that as one singleunit for the complete durationof the race distance. It is a sportthat is steeped in heritage andculture – the annual boat racein the UK is as much as part ofthe world’s sporting heritage as

the Golf majors, Final Day atWimbledon, The GrandNational and the FA Cup Final. For most people if they were tobe asked to name orremember a rower or a vision ofRowing, Sir Steve Redgravewould pop into the minds ofmost. One of the greatestOlympians of all time.

2016 marks the 10thanniversary of Sligo Rowingclub and if you have ever beenlucky enough to be down by

Doorly Park early on a weekendmorning you will see many anaspiring and experiencedrower perfecting their art formon the waters of the RiverGaravogue and Lough Gill. Ona clear dry morning with thesun rising, the sight of rowers onthe water with the scenicbackdrop that our countyprovides us with – is a sight tobehold.

An initiative in 2006 by SligoSport and Recreation

Partnership with Rowing Irelandsaw a steering group formedthat went on to create SligoRowing Club. One of thoseinvolved in that group and acurrent member, Treasurer andCoach at Sligo Rowing Club isRory Clarke, an Athlone nativenow residing in Sligo, he is aman who was brought up onrowing and his enthusiasm andpassion for the art ofcompetitive rowing is to say theleast infectious, and no doubt

those who have an interest inrowing boats in Sligo will wellknow!

Over its initial decade inexistence Sligo Rowing club hassecured storage facilities atDoorly Park for its boats andequipment, held majorRegatta’s and introducedmany a new comer to its sport, regularly holding “come and trydays” where newcomers get achance to get into a boat andsit on water and be involved in

movement on the water and ifyou like that then your broughton through the techniques andtraining in a progressive fashionand integrated into a group.

For the coaches involved ittakes a careful eye on how thatprogressive approach appliesto each individual and howquickly they integrate withexperienced and skilful rowers. It’s an approach that hasworked well for Sligo Rowingclub who have the reputationnow of being a “nursery” for theUniversity’s. Glen Patterson andHugh James came through thecoaching setup at Sligo Rowing

Club to claim national honourswith NUI Galway; anothertalented rower that was lost toathletics was Zac Irwin whocould apparently providespeed to a boat on water in asimilar way that he appliesspeed to his feet on thetarmac!

At the moment a close eye isbeing cast over two ladyrowers, Cora Hackett and TaraDunbar, both have attendedIrish Trials recently and the viewwithin the club is it’s a matter oftime, not an “if” but “when”

Sligo Rowing Club is acompetitive club, attending

regattas on a weekly basis overwhat is a very long season –starting in September runningall the way through to the BankHoliday weekend in August. TheNational Championships areheld in July at the nationalrowing centre in Cork. Racedistances can vary from 1km to6km either head to head or inTime Trial mode. Sligo Rowingclub, train every Saturday andSunday mornings with boats onthe water from 8.30am. Muchattention is paid to techniqueand carefully building thestroke and crew into full flight, starting with small strokes, half

strokes, three quarter strokeand full stroke, body posture, leg movement, oarmanagement and the skill ofhitting the water correctly andin time is crucial to the art ofrowing and success on thewater. Added to that there is atleast two gym sessions perweek also.

Looking back over the past10 years Rory Clarke is morethan pleased with theprogression of the club andeven more so he looks forwardto the next 10 years and hopesto secure even more facilities interms of changing rooms,

showers and toilets, securingmore Regattas in Sligo, on astretch of water beside DoorlyPark, that is practically man-made for spectators and theatmosphere of a sportingcontest.

Sligo Rowing club is in goodshape and at only 10 years ofage and with the experience ofthe likes of Rory Clarke alongwith former national Irish coxTommie Closh and ex-queenschampion rower MalauDonoghue this old art form -the sport of rowing is in goodhands in this relatively youngaspiring Sligo club.

The ‘Margaret Callaghan Me-morial Cup’ Final took place onThursday 24th March at the ITSligo Knocknarea Arena AstroTurf between Foleys Bar FC andThe Village Inn FC with an 8pmkickoff.Foleys Bar started the strongerof the two with the leagues top

marksman Martin Bystrainskyand Gary Rooney going closefor the leagues runners up earlyin the game.Corrigan sent hismen out with the intention ofdoing damage early in thegame and denting the spirit ofthe Village Inn men before theygot a foothold in the game.

The break through came after11 mins with some good workdone the left wing by Rooneywho crossed into a packed 6yard box and seen the ball fallat the feet of Ross Melly whotapped in from close rangepast the helpless “Chips” in theVillage sticks.

The Village Inn seems to besparked into life after falling be-hind with Walsh and McDon-agh finding “Kipper” free onthe edge of the Foleys penaltyarea with a pin point ball buthe could not find the finish firingstraight into the keeper’s hands. The rest of the first half was tooclose to call with both de-fences on top with chanceshard to come by.With only 5minutes remaining in the 1st halfAlan Henry sent a cross into theVillage box which caused

havoc in the defence and Der-mot Horan was adjudged tohave handled the ball in themelee ‘penalty kick” Foleys.Up stepped the left foot wizardGary Fallon who struck homewith a postage stamp spot kick2-0 Foleys HT.

The second half kicked off withboth team’s making somechanges bringing on some freshlegs for what promised to be atight 28mins.McDonagh cameclose after latching onto a shortback pass but failed to finish atthe near post.Rooney was now playing as thelone striker up front andseemed to be enjoying thechallenge giving Folan and Coa hard time while pulling outsome breath taking touchesunder pressure to give his de-fence a breather.

The game was stopped mid-way through the half whenSommers and Walsh collided inmid air with a nasty clash ofheads which meant both menneeded attention. This seemedto knock the stuffing out of theVillage men as they struggledto find a way past Hardagonand his back 4.”Chips was busypulling off some fine saves 1stfrom Fallon and then at closerange from Brady. The final nail in the coffin cameand with a mountain to climbalready the Village Inn foundthemselves down to 10 menafter Leon Gordon was givenhis marching orders after acoming together with Funstonon the sidelines leaving Foleysto see out the game and claimthis year’s “MargaretCallaghan Memorial Cup”#Champions.

Everyone knows that regularexercise is good for thebody. But exercise is also

one of the most effective waysto improve your mental health.Regular exercise can have aprofoundly positive impact ondepression, anxiety, ADHD, andmore. It also relieves stress, improves memory, helps yousleep better, and boosts overallmood. And you don’t have tobe a fitness fanatic to reap thebenefits. Research indicates thatmodest amounts of exercise canmake a difference. No matteryour age or fitness level, you canlearn to use exercise as apowerful tool to feel better.

What are the mental healthbenefits of exercise?Exercise is not just about aerobiccapacity and muscle size. Sure, exercise can improve yourphysical health and yourphysique, trim your waistline, improve your sex life, and evenadd years to your life. But that’snot what motivates most people

to stay active.People who

exerciseregularly

tend to

do so because it gives them anenormous sense of well-being.They feel more energeticthroughout the day, sleep betterat night, have sharpermemories, and feel morerelaxed and positive aboutthemselves and their lives. Andit’s also powerful medicine formany common mental healthchallenges.

Exercise and depressionStudies show that exercise cantreat mild to moderatedepression as effectively asantidepressant medication—butwithout the side-effects, ofcourse. In addition to relievingdepression symptoms, researchalso shows that maintaining anexercise schedule can preventyou from relapsing.Exercise is a powerful depressionfighter for several reasons. Mostimportantly, it promotes all kindsof changes in the brain, including neural growth, reduced inflammation, and newactivity patterns that promotefeelings of calm and well-being.It also releases endorphins, powerful

chemicals in your brain thatenergize your spirits and makeyou feel good. Finally, exercisecan also serve as a distraction, allowing you to find some quiettime to break out of the cycle ofnegative thoughts that feeddepression.

Exercise and anxietyExercise is a natural andeffective anti-anxiety treatment. It relieves tension and stress, boosts physical and mentalenergy, and enhances well-being through the release ofendorphins. Anything that getsyou moving can help, but you’llget a bigger benefit if you payattention instead of zoning out. Try to notice the sensation ofyour feet hitting the ground, forexample, or the rhythm of yourbreathing, or the feeling of thewind on your skin. By adding thismindfulness element—reallyfocusing on your body and howit feels as you exercise—you’llnot only improve your physicalcondition faster, but you mayalso be able to interrupt the flowof constant worries runningthrough your head.

Exercise and stressEver noticed how your bodyfeels when you’re under stress?Your muscles may be tense, especially in your face, neck, and shoulders, leaving you withback or neck pain, or painfulheadaches. You may feel atightness in your chest, apounding pulse, or musclecramps. You may alsoexperience problems such asinsomnia, heartburn, stomachache, diarrhea, orfrequent urination. The worryand discomfort of all thesephysical symptoms can in turnlead to even more stress, creating a vicious cyclebetween your mind and body.Exercising is an effective way tobreak this cycle. As well asreleasing endorphins in thebrain, physical activity helps torelax the muscles and relievetension in the body. Since thebody and mind are so closelylinked, when your body feelsbetter so, too, will your mind.

Exercise and ADHDExercising regularly is one of theeasiest and most effective waysto reduce the symptoms ofADHD and improveconcentration, motivation, memory, and mood. Physicalactivity immediately boosts thebrain’s dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotoninlevels—all of which affect focus

and attention. In this way, exercise works in much the sameway as ADHD medications suchas Ritalin and Adderall.

Exercise and PTSD and traumaEvidence suggests that by reallyfocusing on your body and howit feels as you exercise, you canactually help your nervoussystem become “unstuck” andbegin to move out of theimmobilization stress responsethat characterizes PTSD ortrauma. Instead of thinkingabout other things, pay closeattention to the physicalsensations in your joints andmuscles, even your insides asyour body moves. Exercises thatinvolve cross movement andthat engage both arms andlegs—such as walking(especially in sand), running, swimming, weight training, ordancing—are some of your bestchoices.Outdoor activities like hiking, sailing, mountain biking, rockclimbing, whitewater rafting, and skiing (downhill and cross-country) have also been shownto reduce the symptoms of PTSD.

Other mental and emotionalbenefits of exerciseSharper memory and thinking. The same endorphins that makeyou feel better also help youconcentrate and feel mentallysharp for tasks at hand. Exercisealso stimulates the growth ofnew brain cells and helpsprevent age-related decline.Higher self-esteem. Regularactivity is an investment in yourmind, body, and soul. When itbecomes habit, it can fosteryour sense of self-worth andmake you feel strong andpowerful. You’ll feel better aboutyour appearance and, bymeeting even small exercisegoals, you’ll feel a sense ofachievement.Better sleep. Even short bursts ofexercise in the morning orafternoon can help regulateyour sleep patterns. If you preferto exercise at night, relaxingexercises such as yoga or gentlestretching can help promotesleep.More energy. Increasing yourheart rate several times a weekwill give you more get-up-and-go. Start off with just a fewminutes of exercise a day, andincrease your workout as youfeel more energized.Stronger resilience. When facedwith mental or emotionalchallenges in life, exercise canhelp you cope in a healthy way, instead of resorting to alcohol,

drugs, or other negativebehaviors that ultimately onlymake your symptoms worse.Regular exercise can also helpboost your immune system andreduce the impact of stress.Reaping the mental healthbenefits of exercise is easier thanyou thinkWondering just how active youneed to be to get a mentalhealth boost? It’s probably notas much as you think. You don’tneed to devote hours out yourbusy day, train at the gym, sweat buckets, or run mile aftermonotonous mile. You can reapall the physical and mentalhealth benefits of exercise with30-minutes of moderate exercisefive times a week. Two 15-minuteor even three 10-minute exercisesessions can also work just aswell.

Even a little bit of activity isbetter than nothingIf that still seems intimidating, don’t despair. Even just a fewminutes of physical activity arebetter than none at all. If youdon’t have time for 15 or 30minutes of exercise, or if yourbody tells you to take a breakafter 5 or 10 minutes, forexample, that’s okay, too. Startwith 5- or 10-minute sessions andslowly increase your time. Themore you exercise, the moreenergy you’ll have, so eventuallyyou’ll feel ready for a little more. The key is to commit to do somemoderate physical activity—however little—on most days. Asexercising becomes habit, youcan slowly add extra minutes ortry different types of activities. Ifyou keep at it, the benefits ofexercise will begin to pay off.

You don't have to suffer to getresultsResearch shows that moderatelevels of exercise are best formost people. Moderate means:That you breathe a little heavierthan normal, but are not out ofbreath. For example, you shouldbe able to chat with yourwalking partner, but not easilysing a song. That your body feels warmer asyou move, but not overheatedor very sweaty. Overcoming mental healthobstacles to exerciseSo now you know that exercisewill help you feel much betterand that it doesn’t take as mucheffort as you might havethought. But taking that first stepis still easier said than done.Exercise obstacles are veryreal—particularly when you’realso

struggling with mental health. Here are some common barriersand what you can do to getpast them.

Feeling exhaustedWhen you’re tired or stressed, itfeels like working out will justmake it worse. But the truth isthat physical activity is apowerful energizer. Studies showthat regular exercise candramatically reduce fatigue andincrease your energy levels. Ifyou are really feeling tired, promise yourself a 5-minute walk.Chances are you’ll be able togo five more minutes. Feeling overwhelmed. Whenyou’re stressed or depressed, thethought of adding anotherobligation can seemoverwhelming. Working out justdoesn’t seem doable. If youhave children, managingchildcare while you exercise canbe a big hurdle. Just rememberthat physical activity helps us doeverything else better. If youbegin thinking of physical activityas a priority, you will soon findways to fit small amounts in abusy schedule. Feeling hopeless. Even if you’restarting at “ground zero,” youcan still workout. Exercise helpsyou get in shape. If you have noexperience exercising, start slowwith low-impact movement afew minutes each day.Feeling pain. If you have adisability, severe weight problem, arthritis, or any injury or illness thatlimits your mobility, talk to yourhealthcare provider about waysto safely exercise. You shouldn’t

ignore pain, butrather do

what youcan,

whenyou

can. Divide your exercise intoshorter, more frequent chunks oftime if that helps, or try exercisingin water to reduce joint ormuscle discomfort. Feeling bad about yourself. Areyou your own worst critic? It’stime to try a new way of thinkingabout your body. No matterwhat your weight, age or fitnesslevel, there are others like youwith the goals of getting fit. Trysurrounding yourself with peoplein your shoes. Take a class withpeople at a variety of fitnesslevels. Accomplishing even thesmallest fitness goals will help yougain body confidence.Getting started exercising whenyou’re anxious or depressed Many of us find it hard enough tomotivate ourselves to exercise atthe best of times. When we feeldepressed, anxious, stressed orhave other mental or emotionalproblems, it can be doublydifficult. This is especially true ofdepression and anxiety, and itcan leave you feeling trapped ina catch-22 situation. You knowexercise will make you feelbetter, but depression hasrobbed you of the energy andmotivation you need to exercise,or your social anxiety means youcan’t bear the thought of beingseen at an exercise class orrunning through the park. Sowhat can you do?

It's okay to start small. In fact, it'ssmart. When you’re under the cloud ofan emotional disorder andhaven’t exercised for a longtime, setting yourself extravagantgoals like completing amarathon or working out for anhour every morning will onlyleave you more despondent ifyou fall short. Better to setyourself achievable goals andbuild up from there.Schedule your workout at the

time of day when your energyis highest

That may be firstthing in the

morning

before work or school, or atlunchtime before the mid-afternoon lull hits. If depression oranxiety has you feeling tired andunmotivated all day long, trydancing to some music or simplygoing for a walk. Even a short,15-minute walk can help clearyour mind, improve your mood, and boost your energy level. Asyou move and start to feel a littlebetter, you’ll experience agreater sense of control overyour well-being. You may evenfeel energized enough toexercise more vigorously—bywalking further, breaking into arun, or adding a bike ride, forexample.

Other tips for staying motivatedwhen you’re also struggling withmental healthFocus on activities you enjoy.Any activity that gets youmoving counts. That couldinclude throwing a Frisbee with adog or friend, walking laps of amall window shopping, orcycling to the grocery store. Ifyou’ve never exercised before ordon’t know what you might

enjoy, try a fewdifferent things.

Activities suchas gardening

or tackling ahome

improvement project can begreat ways to start moving morewhen you have a mooddisorder—as well as helping youbecome more active, they canalso leave you with a sense ofpurpose and accomplishment.Be comfortable. Whatever timeof day you decide to exercise, wear clothing that’s comfortableand choose a setting that youfind calming or energizing. Thatmay be a quiet corner of yourhome, a scenic path, or yourfavorite city park.Reward yourself. Part of thereward of completing an activityis how much better you’ll feelafterwards, but it always helpsyour motivation to promiseyourself an extra treat forexercising. Reward yourself witha hot bubble bath after aworkout, a delicious smoothie, orwith an extra episode of yourfavorite TV show.Make exercise a social activity.Exercising with a friend or lovedone, or even your kids will notonly make exercising more funand enjoyable, it can also helpto motivate you to stick to aworkout routine. You’ll also feelbetter than exercising alone. Kale-It-Up SmoothieKale is the new spinach, and as

Slim Down Detox SmoothieLosing weight and detoxing gohand-in-hand, and thissmoothie will make sure thatyou’re getting

What You Needto do both at once. The proteinpowder in this will help youdevelop lean muscle, and alsohelp you make it through tolunch. The green tea providesantioxidants and a bit ofcaffeine to give you someenergy when you’re runninglow.

CARA BUNDORAN CHALLENGE 2016

Page 31: Sligo Sport

SLIGO SPORT APRIL, 2016 31

By John Graham

Iremember a few years ago Iwas running a course oninner confidence. As part of

the session I asked the groupfor examples of people thatthey saw as confident rolemodels.

The usual answers for thetime came up such as Bill

Clinton, Nelson Mandela, Tom Cruise &Jordan (maybe the first time she’s beenlisted with those names). One name thatcaused a bit of disagreement in the roomwas Man United’s legendry manager atthe time, Alex Ferguson. The disagreementwas that around a third of the groupthought he was filled with ego & the othersjust thought he was self-assured. Therewere examples of him being “pig headed”and examples where he listened to others. So where’s the line to what is useful & whatcan hold you back?

Especially in sport I think it’s a veryinteresting area to focus on. The term egocan be defined loosely as the image wehold of ourselves. Whether it’s that wehave a strong opinion of ourselves or a lowone. Whether we see others as below us orthat we see everyone as better than us.The link here is not us, our skills or thecompetition it’s the thoughts and beliefswe have attached to those areas.

Generally I see a lot of people who havebig ego’s not exude confidence butsimulate it. This can be easy to spottedthrough the negative manner they maydeal with threats or setbacks. Their selfconfidence is anchored from how theyperform or what they do, so its external, rather than from within. There’s a fear oflosing or not performing that can lead toanxiety or depression. Not conducivestates for peak performance.

At the other end of the spectrum wehave someone who has low image of self-importance. Perhaps not getting involvedin sports at all because they are worried athow they might look in front of others. Thatthey need to do something to feelconfidence or to feel self worth. Again withsomeone acting from this state, what he orshe are doing is, giving their power away &feeling it can only be gained from doingsomething they don’t think they can do.More stress more anxiety.

What I would recommend is that what ifyou ever fall into either of these camps just

recognise where it’s coming from. You areonly ever experiencing your thinking in themoment.

When we are centered (anchored towithin) and without ego we can have acompletely different experience of life &this will certainly have an effect on ourperformance. Just to give somecomparisons:

-Those acting from ego feel discontentedbecause they’re not who, where or whatthey want to be. Those who are centredfeel content with who they are today.

– Those acting from ego are trying tomake an impression, and to come across ina certain way. Those who are centredknow they are enough as they are.

– Those working out of ego feel theyhave to prove themselves. Those who arenothing to prove.

Out of these who do you feel is morelikely to perform to their best & bounceback from setbacks? Sydney Banks one ofmy favorite teachers summed things uppretty well I think:

“And the idea, psychologically, toexplain the game of life is to let peoplerealise: If you drop your ego (your image ofself-importance) and simply be you – justyou, whoever you are – you’ll find thesecret to heaven here on earth…” SydneyBanks.

The title above describes ex-actly where I am at thispoint in time. After spending

the last two years at Ironman Ihave decided to go short andfast again. This is no easy task atthe ripe old age of 40. My goalsfor this year are to compete inthe National Duathlon Champsand then the Super Series. TheSuper Series is a series of sixdraft legal events that the bestathletes in the country com-plete in. Unlike the traditionalnone draft legal races, theseraces are draft legal. Hence theneed to upgrade my equip-ment.

The Mouse and his new TimeMachine- The Bottecchia Tour-malet T1 2016-(just google it)

In order for this to happen Ihave to reinvent myself and mybody. It would be like leavingyour car into the mechanic andasking him to install anothergear or fit a turbo. For the pervi-ous few years I did very little

speed work in my run sessions. Idid not need to as Ironman ismostly about strength and en-durance-(and also a mobileeating fest). For this reasonalone I did not suffer any set-backs through injury which inturn allowed me to stack brickon brick on brick until I had con-structed an aerobic wall whichwas the back bone of my Iron-man success in Barcelona.

It is important to mention thatI did not do this alone. I hadColm and Ross from Flow Muli-tisport guiding me all the way.You see I just like to train andnot have to think about it. Possi-bly one of my biggest flaws is Ilike giving myself as I call it ‘’TheWavin Pipe’’ (training to hard).Myself and Tommy Thresholdhave a very special relation-ship. So the lads keep me bal-anced and add the progressionas the weeks and months rollinto each other.

This time last year I was 12

stone as I went out to graze forthe winter but I was in for thelong haul. I had selected Iron-man Barcelona in October asmy main ‘’A’’ race. I racedsparingly during the summerand I found this tough. Whenyou are used to competing atthe top it’s hard to not makethe podium. But with a nickname of Tommy Two Pints anda Potta to boot, I should havelowered my expectations. Stillthey were a means to an end.Believe me when I tell you Ihave a few scores to settle thisyear.

Every athlete needs to havea goal otherwise what’s thepoint. So when you figure outwhat you what tell someonestick it on the fridge and getyour family to support you.Achieving a goal is a very spe-cial thing, a reward for all thehard work and sacrifice alongthe way. Not achieving yourgoal should ultimately make

you stronger as it will make yourefocus and more determinedto achieve it next time. So pickyour ‘’A’’ race and let all roadslead to it. Race your B racespointing in the direction of yourNorth Star.

This year training is going well.Coach Casey is introducinghard running to get the speedback into the legs and thebody is holding all be it with afew creaks. Running 5 minuteflat mile repeats at 40 is a deli-cate balancing act. A problemI have had in the past is that Ihave felt my aerobic systemwas able to produce more thanI could physically run. A bit likea BMW M5 engine mounted inan old Volkswagen Beetle. Ihave controlled my weight thisyear so it is certainly helping. Ihave also drastically reducedmy free sugar intake and tripsto McDonnells. You don’t seethe Pro’s heading to McD’safter training. Alcohol con-sumption is also very low. Ireckon it’s a large part in injuryprevention as it ultimately onlyleads to dehydration-Up theIrish- No Manors.

Swimming-is steady at themoment, I am not lighting upthe pool but I feel I am pro-gressing and its only March

Bike-my bike feels strong as Iseem to have retained allot ofstrength from the Ironman. I willneed to break through my pre-vious highs. With plenty of en-durance and a plenty of pain Ithink I can take it to a newlevel.

Running-my running is comingstrong and progressing-I willneed to run mid 16’s off thebike in the super series to tryand clip some of the youngguns. It would be great if TI in-troduced a weighting systemlike in horse racing and the ath-lete was handicapped in re-gard to life demands. Work,

kids, ability to train, stress, weight etc. That would fairlylevel it. Give some of the youngguns a couple of pounds oflead to race with. Only joking, you can only respect the com-mitment shown by these ath-letes year in year out.

Equipment- My main manStephen from Chain Driven Cy-cles has hooked my up with afantastic aero road bike. TheBottecchia Tourmalet T1 2016-(just google it) - What a ma-chine-weighing in at 7kg fullyaero with an Ultegra group set. This bike just flows and is adream to ride. All the cablesare fully integrated. It also looksgreat. To coin a phrase -ridingthis bike “it’s like your bottom iseating chocolate” This bike ison a par with the very best ofthem and is the best bang foryour buck around.. The onlyweakness in this partnership isthe aerobic/anaerobic animalsitting on it. So there you have it, it’s the Du-atlons for breakfast, the SuperSeries for lunch and The LostSheep for desert. My romancewith Ironman will have to wait ayear. I need to wait till the kidsare a few years older before Igo to Kona. It may have alsobeen useful if I had told my wifeabout Kona before Barcelona, the first she heard of Kona wasan hour after the race.So catch me if youcan.................Eamon (mouse) McAndrew

Season GoalsFirst goal of the season is to stayinjury freeSecond -is to compete in theNational Duatlon SeriesThird-Compete in the Super Se-ries-win the over 40,s maybeeven the 35s- like McGregor in-stead he is going up I am goingdown Fourth-Podium in The LostSheep.

The Season so farI have been training andprogressing consistently for thepast four months with a view ofcompeting at the NationalDuathlon Championshipswhich were held last weekendin Mondello. I raced CongDuathlon six weeks ago andhad a moderateperformance. It was my firstouting and as the saying goes‘’you can’t just switch it on’’. Iran to hard and then had nolegs for the bike which in turnresulted in poor runperformance in the final run. Ifinished third overall.

Predetor Duathlon-GalwayI knew I was in good formheading to this race as I couldfeel the fitness and strengthpumping in my veins. In thisrace I basically had to racethe clock form the gun. Thecompetition was lacking as itwas not a National SeriesEvent. I ran the first run hardaverage pace of 3.10 per kmfor 4 km. The bike route wasflat and I pushed hardaveraging 39km per hour. I justseemed to have loads of go. Iclosed the final 3 km run at3.20 pace. This was a race thatI won well; I was pleased withmy performance as the clockdoes not lie.So four weeks to the NationalChampionships and I had asinister pain in my knee. Theslight pain turned into a slightlybigger pain. I continued totrain but I had to dial back theintensity at the time when Ineeded to be increasing it. Thiswas not good for the head as Ifelt I had now stoppedprogressing and as an eliteathlete you are always lookingto get the final few percentout of your body. Needless tosay I was not happy with thefinal preparations for theNationals.

National Champs 7km run 40km bike 4 km run-Draft legal inMondello Race TrackThe field was certainly stackedfor this race, it was going toferocious. The conditions wereas we say in Mayo ‘’Cat’’- rain, wind and a chilling 8 degrees. Iran with the front group of fivewith an opening first km of2.50. The front pack finishedon 22.30 for 7 km. Onto the

bike and a very technicalcourse to complete-12 laps ofMondello Race Track trying tohold the wheel of the bike infront into wet corners. I foundthe going tough and the lackof bike racing and specificbike skills were my undoing. Atthe mid way point on the bike Idid not have much to race foras my goal was a top fivefinish. From this point on Istarted to get cold and thencolder. I came off the bike andI felt very stiff. I ran 30m andthen started to seize. The coldhad gone right into my bones. My legs would not bend andwere locked straight, next myjaw locked. My race was doneand I had to take immediateaction as these are sure signsof hypothermia. My friends Joeand Lorraine have a campervan and gave me a hotshower that brought mearound. I was verydisappointed with the race as Ihad placed myself in aposition after the first run tocompete. The race was wonby Brian McCrystal with a supereffort on the bike and final run.All you can do in situations likethis is learn something to takeforward, dust yourself off andget training towards the nextgoal. However, I did questionever doing a race again. Selfpity is a very useless emotion.

What can be treated?Because we work at an energy level it doesn’t matter what your

problem is. Our job is to deal with what causes your problem, sopeople come to our clinics with every conceivable problem be itphysical, emotional or mental. Children also benefit hugely from

the treatment.

How does the therapy work?Your body is made up of energy and if this energy system

allow the body to heal.

What is the role of the Plexus therapist? The first step in the bodies healing process is to get your energy
