The Sunnah of the prophet Muhammad s.a.a.w. guided by Allah

s.w.t exemplified for us the highest ideals which we should strive

for.

In matters of cleanliness, there are certain acts which

correspond to the natural cleanliness (FITWRAH). This is based

on the detail teaching of the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad

s.a.a.w.

In fact all of us human are born in FITWRAH, and Islam as Ad-

Deen upholds FITWRAH.



FITWRAH are five - or - Five things are part of one’s FITWRAH

(natural cleanliness): circumcision, shaving the pubic hairs,

trimming the nails , removing the hair under the armpits and

trimming the moustache.”

(Hadith reported by Ibn Majah and the Jama’ah)

1. CIRCUMCISSION FOR THE MALE

Majority of scholars agree to it being WAJIB -obligatory for all

male Muslims, although they differ as to when it is to be done.

Al-Shafi’e r.a. maintains that it should be done on the seventh

day after his birth.



The Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. said:


“Prophet Ibrahim a.s. circumcised himself after he was 80

years old. And he circumcised himself at/with Al-qadum.”

(Hadith reported by Bukhary)

“ “ And And who turns away from the religion of Abraham who turns away from the religion of Abraham

but such as debase their souls with folly?but such as debase their souls with folly? Him Him

(Abraham) We chose and rendered pure in this (Abraham) We chose and rendered pure in this

world: and he will be in the Hereafter in the ranks of world: and he will be in the Hereafter in the ranks of

the Righteous.the Righteous.

Behold! His Lord said to him: Behold! His Lord said to him: "Submit (thy will to "Submit (thy will to

Me)" Me)" He said: "He said: "I bow (my will) to the Lord and I bow (my will) to the Lord and

Cherisher of the universeCherisher of the universe.“ .“

Female Muslims are not WAJIB, although some may regard it as

MAKRAMAH - a noble act (in their customary or local context).

Hadith reports concerning female circumcision are all weak

(Dhoif). And even in one of them, in which he was asked about

this custom as practiced amongst ladies at the time, which the

Prophet s.a.a.w. was said to have allowed but he did stressed :

(i.e. the clitoris must not be mutilated) ”

2. SHAVING OF PUBIC HAIRS, REMOVING HAIR UNDER ARMPITS,

TRIMMING MOUSTACHE AND NAILS


“Be different from the idolaters: grow your beard

and trim your moustache”

(Hadith agreed upon by Bukhary & Muslim)

but Bukhary adds:

“whenever Ibn ‘Umar made Hajj or ‘umrah, he would

hold his beard in his fist and, whatever exceeded his

fist, he would cut off.”

3. KEEPING BEARD, BUT MUST BE GROOMED IN A TIDY MANNER

AND NOT LEFT DISHEVELLED


“A man came to the Prophet s.a.w. with unkempt hair and

untidy beard. The Prophet s.a.w. pointed to him, as if ordering

him to straighten his hair and beard. He did so and returned.

Thereupon the Prophet s.a.w. observed, “is that not better than

one of you coming with his hair unkempt, as if he was a devil?”

(Hadith reported by Malik from Atha’ ibn Yassar)

4. OILING AND COMBING ONE’S HAIR

“Whoever has hair should honour it.”

(Hadith reported by Abu Dawud)


Hair can be cut or left to grow as long as it is well groomed. Either

choice can be regarded as honouring it. But it is greatly disliked to

shave part of the hair and leaving part of it (like what it is done

nowadays by some “punky rockers”.


The Prophet s.a.w. said: “Shave it all or leave it all.”

(Hadith reported by Ahmad, Muslim, Abu Dawud & Nasa’i)

Ibn ‘Umar related that “the Messenger of Allah s.a.a.w.

prohibited Qiza.

When asked: “What is Qiza?”

He said: “It is to shave off part of the hair of a youth and

to leave part.”

(Hadith reported by Bukhary & Muslim)


5. LEAVING GREY HAIR IN PLACE (i.e. do not pluck them). Applies

to both men and women

The Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. said:


“Do not pluck the grey hairs as they are a Muslim’s light. A

Muslim never grows a grey hair except that Allah writes for him

a good deed and raises him up a degree, and He erases for him,

due to that, one of his sins.”

(Hadith by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Nasa’i, and Ibn

Majah)

6. BUT CHANGING THE COLOUR OF GREY HAIR BY USING HENNA,

RED DYE, YELLOW DYE ETC. IS PERMITTED

The companions differ in the kind of colour but az-Zuhri said: “We

used black dye if our faces are youthful, but if wrinkles were

present and the teeth were gone, we would not use it.”


“The best thing that one can use to change the colour of

grey hair is henna and katm (a reddish dye).”

(Hadith reported by Muslim)

7. USE OF MUSK AND OTHER TYPES OF PERFUMES

These are pleasing to the soul and beautify the atmosphere.

(Ladies are to use perfumes for their husbands. If need to prevent

body odour, do not choose too strongly scented deodorants.)


Anas reported the Messenger of Allah said “Among

the things of this world, I love women and perfume,

and the coolness of my eyes is prayer (swolah).”

(Hadith reported by Ahmad and Nasa’i)

“If someone offers perfume, do not reject it, for it is light to

carry and has a sweet scent.”

(Hadith reported by Muslim, Nasa’i, & Abu Dawud)

Ibn ‘Umar use to burn a certain wood (aluwah) that has a nice

smell. He also used camphor. He used to say, “This is the way

the Messenger of Allah s.a.w. inhaled such scents (i.e. by

burning them).”

(Hadith reported by Muslim & Nasa’i)


““Bathing on Friday for every adult, using Miswak (tooth-Bathing on Friday for every adult, using Miswak (tooth-

stick) and applying perfume, that is available – these are stick) and applying perfume, that is available – these are
