SUPPLEMENT TO THE BULLETIN WEEK OF JULY 13, 2015 LILLIE SUBURBAN NEWSPAPERS
-
He's been working in the trade since he was 17 years old, and now, 40 years later, he's still at it, with a customer-first approach, a trusting client base, and unbeatable experience.
His motto for running a coin and precious metal company: "It's all about taking care of people and giving them a fair price," he says.
His approach is to make sure the customer's happy and getting a good price, and he's happy to do the work for that he'll gladly make apprais-als and offers, and do home visits to help families with precious heirlooms figure out what their coin collections are worth.
With his expertise and his wide network of connections, Westerling can offer pricing that's competitive with any coin dealer in the country, big or small.
It's that expertise that has helped him gain the trust of innumerable re-peat clients, who swear by him.
Westerling learned the rare coin trade from his Uncle Truman Truman took him under his wing and got him interested in rare and unusual coins when he was still in high school. Years later, that passion remains he rel-ishes in the history behind old coins.
"If the coin could talk, what stories would it tell?" he ponders.
He's been lucky enough to see every variety of rare coin come through the shop, including "trial coins" the first imprints of new coin patterns, which
were often given to elected officials and dignitaries.
He recalls one coin that came through the shop it was an extremely rare 1921 $20 St. Gauden's gold piece. A family had brought it in hoping to get a sound appraisal, which he gave them. In fact, his quote ended up being a better offer than the family got when they sold the piece at auction, by a margin of $15,000!
Have a coin with family lore but few specifics behind it? Stop at the Tru-man Company's Roseville office, where walk-ins are more than welcome. Having grown up working in his uncle's coin shop in California, seeing peo-ple walk through the doors "reminds me of the old coin shop days," he says.
The Truman Company is a trusted source for coin dealing
For Roger Westerling, owner of the Truman Company, rare coins are a life-long passion, and a daily inspiration.

This year's Slice theme is "Light our Fire," and the event will feature two nights of firework displays. But before the sun goes down and the sparks fly,
people of all ages will have the opportunity to par-ticipate in various activities, all jam-packed into three official days. Slice of Shoreview Days will pre-launch Thursday,
July 23 with its second annual Kick-off Party and first-ever Slice Kick-off Golf Tournament. The Slice will be in full swing come Friday, July 24, at Island Lake Park and will run through Sunday, July 26. The golf tournament will tee-off at 11 a.m. on
Thursday. Slice committee member Pam Wilson said the com-
mittee tried to organize a golf tournament at last
year's Slice of Shoreview Days but lacked the impetus to get it going. This year, the committee reached out to a new golf course and expects a great response.
Thursday night at the Kick-off Party, from 5-7 p.m. at Shoreview Community Center, Slice sponsors, ven-dors and volunteers will be invited to socialize and enjoy catered food from local restaurants like Taste of Shoreview winner, Bamboo House Bistro and Bar, for free. The Slice is run entirely by volunteers and funded
through sponsors. The City of Shoreview donates the largest amount of money to the festival, while many corporations also chip in to help fund the Slice. Many crowd favorite attractions will return to the
festival this year, along with some new surprises.
The Slice Begins The official Slice starts Friday, July 24 at 4 p.m.
with activities like its annual Dock Dogs competition (Friday, 4-8 p.m., Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) local artists' booths (Friday 4-8 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
Light our fireSlice of Shoreview Days is just around the corner and is sure to be a huge blast
quite literally this year.
Slice Kick-off Golf Tournament
The inaugural Slice Kick-off Golf Tourna-ment will start 11 a.m. Thursday, July 23 at Chomonix Golf Course. Players will each pay $50 and receive a
bucket of balls, a cart and lunch. Players will be awarded at the Slice
Kick-off Party. Players can sign up with a team of four
at www.store.shoreviewmn.gov. Chomonix Golf Course is located at 700
Aqua Lane in Lino Lakes.

and food court (Friday, 4-10 p.m., Sat-urday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) Dogs of all breeds and sizes are
invited to take a leap of faith at the annual Slice Dock Dogs competition, which Dock Dogs Northern Stars pres-ident Cheri McClaine said has been voted the favorite competition that the
organization holds in Minnesota dur-ing past years. "We get a lot of hometown dogs,"
McClaine said, adding about 80 dogs compete each year. Dogs older than six months can par-
ticipate in the long jump, high jump and speed retrieve competitions, McClaine said. As for the art booths, Slice of Shor-
eview chairperson Jacci Krebsbach said
they will feature more local art than ever and will even include a booth with one artist that has received top honors at Minnesota art events like Duluth's "Art in Bayfront Park Art Fair."Artists will sell and showcase their
pottery, jewelry, paintings, photography and more.
Slice some eatsThis year's food court will include
several new booths for lovers of sweet and savory flavors alike. On the savory side, Slice committee
member Steve Gallop said Bubba's BBQ is one new vendor that will sell pulled pork wontons. For those with a sweet tooth, Uptown Girl Cupcakes and Des-sert will be able to satisfy those sweet cravings.Outside of the food court, Daryl's
Dog House is a new food vendor that will sell Chicago-style hot dogs at the Slice's Car and Motorcycle Show, Gal-lop said, adding that Grandpa's Ice Cream will sell treats to kids or kids at heart while they wait in line to use the ever-popular Slip n' Slide.
Starting 5 p.m. Friday night, kids can also enjoy the Slice Petting Zoo and Pony Rides (Friday, 5-8 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday 12-4 p.m.) and the carnival (Friday 5-10 p.m., Sat-urday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
Shoreview's got talentThe Slice committee will also try to
attract older kids and teens this year through its invitation to high school students and other community mem-bers to perform on the Slice's main stage Friday night. From 5-6:30 p.m. the Slice will host
several local performers that will be selected by the Slice committee. Gallop said the idea came from a few Mounds View High School students who said they didn't feel represented at the festival."We dont want [the Slice] to just be
for older people and adults. We want [it] also to be appealing for the kids," Gallop said. "Makes it more of a com-munity event."

Although the initial interest in the local performances came from high school students, Gallop said the Slice committee would accept audition vid-eos or photos from people of any age. The committee will review the submis-sions and select around four or five people or groups to perform Friday night, he said. Performers can email their photos or
videos to Gallop at [email protected]. The Slice will also offer another per-
formance opportunity this year for those who aren't interested in the main stage spotlight.Slice committee member Ali Farn-
sworth said she would lead a group of volunteer performers in a flash mob, where participants will break out into song and dance during the festivities.Slice goers should keep their eyes out
for the group, Farnsworth said, which will perform at a high-profile location on the festival grounds Friday, Satur-day or Sunday. The group will rehearse at 8 p.m.
every Wednesday night at the Shorev-
iew Community Center before the Slice festivities. For more information or to join the group, email Farnsworth at [email protected].
Rock and popFor those who like tradition, the
Rockin' Hollywoods will take to the main stage after the local performers finish their shows, playing Friday night from 7-11 p.m. Gallop said the band has returned to the Slice every year for more than 20 years and have always been a big hit."The park fills every time they
come and perform," Gallop said of the Rockin Hollywoods. "Everyone really seems to enjoy them."This year, the Slice festivities will
end with a bang Friday and Saturday nights when fireworks illuminate the

sky over Island Lake Park, both evenings at 10 p.m.Slice committee member Stephanie Schutta said
people could expect bigger and better firework shows this year since the committee chose to spend extra money and attention on the fireworks."The fireworks are such an important part of our
festival," Schutta said.
Pancakes and floatsSaturday, July 25 will begin with a Boy Scout hosted
pancake breakfast, which will also happen on Sunday morning (Saturday, 8-11 a.m., Sunday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.). The Slice of Shoreview Days parade rolls out at 10
a.m. on Saturday. The parade will start at the intersec-tion of County Road D and Victoria Street and follow Victoria Street up to Island Lake Park. After the parade, families will be able to find many kid-
friendly activities like the Kids' Climb a large bounce house with a jungle gym inside and trampolines attached to the outside (Friday 5-8 p.m., Saturday 12-8 p.m., Sun-day 12-4 p.m.) which is new to the Slice this year. Kids can also participate in the new Coconut Kevin's
Beach Party from 12:45-2 p.m. Saturday. Kevin Hall is a magician who will host the Hawaiian-
themed kids party, which will include hula dancers and games for the kids.
Sunday fundaySunday, July 26 the last day of the Slice will
start at 8 a.m. when bikers take to Shoreview's trails in
the Slice's 14th annual Tour De Trails bike ride. Bikers can choose to traverse an 8-mile loop or
brave the 22 to 25-mile loop. Both courses will start at the Deluxe Corporation
parking lot across from Island Lake Park and wind through Snail Lake Regional Park. Bikers can pre-register for the race on Shorev-
iew's city website at www.store.shoreviewmn.gov. The Slice's annual interdenominational church
service will be held after the bike ride at 10 a.m. on the main stage and will be followed by the Car and Motorcycle Show. Slice car show committee chair Dan Rustad
said the car show is unique because cars parade over Interstate 694 on Victoria Street before they are judged. Street rods and muscle cars alike will parade from the Cummins Power parking lot to the northeast corner of Victoria Street and I-694 at noon. Rustad said instead of the Car and Motorcycle
Show committee judging the cars, show attend-ees will be able to vote for first, second and third place in two categories of cars and one category of motorcycles this year. The committee will choose one car as their top pick. Also new this year, car and motorcycle show
participants and attendees will be encouraged to make a donation to the St. Paul Police K-9 Founda-tion, which will show its dogs at the Slice and help direct cars and hand out voters' ballots at the show. Car and Motorcycle Show awards will be handed
out at 3:45 p.m. and by 4 p.m., this year's Slice of Shoreview Days will be just another memory.
