sick. My husband was

also ill and was able to

recuperate and return to

work while I was taken to

Denver to be treated for

my illness. I returned home and continued to recuper-

ate, but was unable to return to work. I had gone to

the Post Office here in Grand Lake and received a card

in the mail with no return address or any identification

of where it came from. The card had a ‘Get Well Soon’

message in gold glitter. Within the card was $140 dol-

lars. The message at the top of the card stated ‘Thank

you for all the hard work that you do.’ I was quite taken

back and emotionally touched by the kindness of this

one individual or individuals who thought of me in

such a wonderful way.”

Experts provide help as March 31 health insurance deadline nears

C onnect for Health Colorado rep-resentatives and Certified Health Coverage Guides are attending upcoming events during the count-

down to the March 31 health insurance deadline of open enrollment. The guides will meet with local residents and business owners to answer questions, discuss new health insurance offered by the statewide health insurance Marketplace and assist with enrollments. The deadline for unin-sured Coloradans to enroll in commercial

health insurance for 2014 is March 31. After that, uninsured Coloradans cannot get commercial coverage until 2015 unless they have a special circumstance, such as losing a job that provided coverage or moving to the state. The next open enrollment period will be Nov. 15, 2014, to February 15, 2015. Coloradans can apply for Medicaid and Child Health Plan Plus at any point during the year. Connect for Health Colorado is a new health insurance marketplace and support network that allows individuals, families and small employers to compare and purchase health insurance and access

new financial assistance to reduce costs. The Customer Service Center is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Mondays through Saturdays, at 1-855-PLANS-4-YOU (855-752-6749). More information is available at www.Connect-forHealthCO.com.

The penalty for not having health in-surance in 2014 is not as simple as many people think, and probably more than the $95 minimum under the federal

WWhat makes government transparent?

That answer involves many, many layers of case law, legisla-

tion, expectation, ideology, opinion, awareness and even attitude — too many layers, in fact, to deliberate here.

In essence, it’s how expensive fees are for obtaining records, or how well minutes are recorded and kept, or how populated web-sites are with information, or how emails are exchanged among government officials, or how they conduct business in private, and every-thing in between. Transparency, or the lack of it, includes what isn’t recorded, or what may be hidden from our view.

It wasn’t easy, but the Sky-Hi News has conducted its first-ever Sunshine Audit in celebration of National Sunshine Week, held this week of March 16-22. The audit involved all incor-porated towns in Grand County and Grand County government, as well as four major districts in the county: the two school districts, the hospital district, and the library district. The districts results will be published next week.

We took on this challenge for multiple rea-sons. We are hoping the project is enlightening to readers and empowers them to seek records and information at their disposal, educates
