In the 2014, the Tram Museum will be starting the run-up to an important 50th anniversary. The Danish Tramway His- torical Society, which operates and develops the museum on the basis of unpaid voluntary labour, will be celebrating this fine anni- versary in February 2015. At this year’s exhibition at the Tramway Museum, you can see glimpses of the preparations for the 25th anniversary exhibition in 1990 in Copenhagen Town Hall, which was the first time a tram was ex- hibited there. This will be repeated at the grand anniversary exhibition in the Town Hall in February 2015. This year’s exhibition in Valby Old Depot also shows how modern trams – often called light rail ve- hicles – are on their way in the four largest Danish cities. The special focus is on light rail plans for the Copenhagen area. Light rail lines are comprising a significant part of the public transport services in ever more European cities. In the 2014 season, the Tramway Museum will once again be visited by the owners of the cars that accompanied the trams, with their historic vehicles. The exhibition in Valby Old Depot shows how the city streets looked until 1972, when the last Copenhagen tram line was converted to bus operations. The jubilee exhibition in Copenhagen Town Hall will take place from 11-21 February 2015. The Tramway Museum’s collection is extensive, and covers the whole period from the first horse trams to the last – then modern – articulated trams acquired in the 1960s and sold to Egypt on the cessation of tramway traffic in 1972. Two of the articulated trams have since been bought back and are now under restoration. In addition to trams, the museum also has a number of buses and trol- ley buses – many of them roadwor- thy – in its collec- tion, which help to illustrate the devel- opment of public transport over the years. Some of the re- storation work is carried out at the Tram Museum, some in Odense and on Bornholm, and some with the help of Danish and foreign partners. In the course of the 2014 season, we are looking forward to being able to present some trams in traffic after restoration. From the start of the season, the new café car, housed in a for- mer ‘Düsseldorfer’ tram, will be ready. The restored bogie tram KS-587 will also be ready early in the season, after a break of eight years. On the bus side, restoration work has also been carried out – including on the museum’s Leyland series 7 city bus from 1984, which was delivered to Birk- erød Bus Compagni. The bus has been renovated and returned to its original livery, and can be seen on the museum route around Valsølille lake SPORVEJSMUSEET SKJOLDENÆSHOLM The Danish Tramway Museum encompasses two tram depots, one of which, Valby Old Depot, dates from 1901, and two tram lines with a combined length of approximately two kilometres. Traffic weekend

Horse tram and horse omnibusDriving on selected days

In 2014, too, the Tramway Museum can offer guests a ride on a horse tram and horse omnibus. For practical reasons, however, this can only be done on selected days in the season. You can see which days the tram is operating in the “2014 Calendar” section in this brochure.

The last horse tram ran in 1915, and the last horse omnibus ran in Copenhagen in 1917.

This half-timbered hall, built in 1901-02 when the Valby line con-verted to electrical operations, originally lay in Valby Langgade (Copenhagen), and was in use as a depot until 1953. In 1954 the building was transferred to Herlev, where it housed a timber yard until 1994. In 1995 the building was dismantled and re-erected

at the Tramway Museum.

It was inaugurated on 26 May 1998, and now houses the majority of the museum’s collections and a small model tramway.

On 13 and 14 December the Tramway Museum will hold its annual Christmas event, with sales of Christmas trees at the Eilers Eg loop in the forest.

There will be a heated Christmas café in Valby Old Depot, with traditional mulled wine, hot chocolate, dumplings, etc.

In the depot there will be live folk music, and Santa and his elves will arrive by reindeer-drawn tram.

Back in the days when trams fi lled the streets of Copenhagen, Aarhus and Odense, it was the dream of many Danish children to become tram drivers or tram conductors when they grew up. Hop on a tram at the Tramway Museum and travel back in time to those days. Odense said goodbye to its trams as long ago as 1952, Aarhus in 1971, and Copenhagen in 1972.

Admission: Adults DKK 90, children DKK 45Groups (min. 20 paying guests): Adults DKK 80, children DKK 40The admission ticket gives unlimited travel on the museum’s trams on the day of the visit. The children’s rate is for children aged 3 - 12 years.Veteran bus trip around Valsølille lake: Adults DKK 20, children DKK 10

Groups of up to 18 persons can hire a tram to act as a ”base” during their visit. The tram contains a long table, and a driver will be placed at the group’s disposal. Guests can bring their own food and drink, or make other arrangements with us.

Besides the admission fee, the charge for the fi rst two hours is DKK 1,000, and thereafter DKK 300 per commenced half-hour.

If you would like to hire a veteran bus for a wedding, anniver-sary, birthday or other occasion, contact the Tramway Museum.

You can make a reservation at the telephone numbers and e-mail address listed under ”Special events”, below.

If you wish to visit the Tramway Museum outside normal opening hours, you can book a special event.

An extra charge of DKK 1,500 is made, in addition to the normal admission charges, to cover the expenses of the museum and staff. The minimum charge is however DKK 3,500.

Special events normally take place for up to 2½ hours before 5.00 pm, but other arrangements can be made.

To book special events, please call: Per Tingman Møller, tel. +45 3874 1356 Mikael Lund, tel. +45 4045 8210or contact us by e-mail: [email protected]

On Wednesdays in the Summer holiday period and every day in the autumn half-term break, you can try your hand at driving a tram through the woods under the expert guidance of a museum tram driver. After the trip, you will receive a diploma.

Besides the admission fee, it costs DKK 150 to be a guest tram driver.

Reservation is made for suffi cient space in the trams.
