We feel that Douglas is lacking in such an event. The Horse Trams are iconic and unique to Douglas, therefore we feel that this event could become the annual, must aend event for Douglas. This event will take place at the Queen’s Promenade end of the Promenade by the Horse Tram Sheds and the Terminus Tavern. This area will be closed to vehicle traffic and the whole area can be ulised for the event. The day will consist of a number of teams racing against each other to push a tram across a finishing line. We envisage that each team will consist of 5/6 parcipants and the length of the push will be approximately 50 metres. It is envisaged that approximately 1000 can comfortably aend this event. Facilies in the area are excellent with the pub and public conveniences. We have also determined some extra parking on the Summerland site. Who is this event aimed at? The Horse Tram Push 2012

The Douglas Bay Horse TramwayThe Douglas Bay Horse Tramway, as it used to be known, dates from 1876,when Thomas Lightfoot, a Sheffield civil engineer, retired to Douglas when the town was expanding as a tourist resort. With his keen eye for business, Lightfoot saw the potential for public transport along the developing promenade.Douglas Borough Council continues to operate the service to this day, and the tramway has survived the Great War and the introduction of buses on the promenades in 1926.Since 1927 the service has run in summer only and it remains in place as one of the most distinctive features of the island’s tourist market. Now in its 136th year of operation, on 7th August 2001 the tramway celebrated its 125th anniversary with a cavalcade of trams along the promenades and over the years the Queen, the late Queen Mother and Princess Margaret, Princess Anne and the Duke of Edinburgh have been passengers on what is universally acknowledged to be the oldest operating horse drawn tramway in the world.
