Subject and Themes• The subject was body modification and Joeltron

• Had themes of body modifying, appearance,

perception, piercings, attitudes, tattoos, piercings,

normality (normal v abnormal - binary opposition).

Page 3: Skin

Structure/Narrative• It starts off by identifying his most eye catching

modification then he gives an introduction to who

he is and what he does, then he goes through his

story of how he got the modifications and when

and his parents thoughts and opinions on them as

well as relationships, jobs and schooling then

concludes by showing where he ended up working

(tattoo parlor) and ends with a sense of happiness

that he's achieving his goals and that he's happy.

Mise En Scene• Low key lighting upon the interviewee which

dimmed the image and cast shadows across his

face, background was an artistic mural of his work

place and his modifications, no make up and

natural hair to display his now natural appearance.

Page 5: Skin

Camera• Frequent extreme close ups to show his

modifications, the camera changed focus a lot,

handheld shot which gave off a shaky effect which

is out of the ordinary for documentaries which

could be used to represent how the interviewee is

out of the ordinary, Dutch angle shot where he's off

centre which too breaks normality like him, uses the

rule of thirds and towards the end there's some long

shots and establishing shots of his work place.

Sound and Editing• Sound - Non diegetic sound of the music in the

background: DJ Shadow - Hardcore, which is

continuously played throughout, it's a modern track so it

could relate to the modern ways of people like Joeltron

who modify their body, the scratching sound of the

music and transitions could be to relate to the physical

scratching of his body.

• Editing - Fast paced editing which at points matches the

music in the background, frequent jump cuts which

could relate to the physical cutting of his body, also the

jump cuts break the normality of documentaries which

could, yet again, represent the interviewee, the fading

of the lighting at the end matches the music and the

transition between shots is in the style of old movies,

which is uncharacteristic because that would be seen as

not normal, like Joeltron to some people.

Archive Material and Graphics

• Contained no archive material

• Graphics - The credits and introduction which

consisted of extremely large font in which the letters

took up the whole page, the letters themselves had

no solid colour, but instead were filled with the

transition of the rolling film or recordings of his body

modifications within the words.
