SKIBBEREENARTS FESTIVAL
WWW.SKIBBEREENARTSFESTIVAL.COM
HELLO AND WELCOME TO SKIBBEREEN ARTS FESTIVAL 2012Skibbereen once again pays homage to the vibrant fabric of our
community that is the arts and again we have managed to produce an
excellent programme of events with many world-class national and
international acts coming to town. Highlights include the annual gala
concert commemorating Canon James Goodman featuring Iarla Ó
Lionáird & Steve Cooney, an evening with Donal Dineen, our annual
outdoor fi lm screening, an action-packed Children’s Festival, the Sound
& Vision trail around the town and a multitude of fi lm screenings
throughout the festival. There are also many new and exciting events in
the programme including a brilliant exhibition of miniatures, a week-
long animation workshop for teenagers, a graffi ti workshop resulting
in an original and unique piece of art for Skibbereen and an archive
night of local footage on the big screen. We have made a huge effort this
year to involve the town and groups within the town more in the festival
and I think the result is very satisfying and heartening. There will be a
session trail around the town in eateries at lunchtime and in pubs at
night. There are many exhibitions, theatre performances, workshops,
performances, readings, platform dancing, a céilí, a children’s fi lm and
much much more!
We have endeavoured to keep everything as affordable as possible
again this year as we are only too aware of the fi nancial constraints
facing many people and have also tried to put many free events on
the programme. There really is something for everyone this year and
we encourage you to come along and support the festival as often
as you can and to promote it to your families, friends, visitors and
customers. As the seanfhocal says, ‘Ar Scáth a chéile a mhairimid’ - we
all live in each other’s shadow - and this is really true of all festivals
and initiatives to support our town and area - everyone gains from a
successful event.

YELLOW
This fi lm of that event has as its
premise that “to endure is to live
and fi nally to triumph.” The fi lm
unfolds over four hours, following
the nature of the original
performances. Paddy Cahill and
Amanda Coogan’s fi lm presents
concurrently, on a single canvas,
the six performances.
www.yellowthefi lm.wordpress.com
Dir: Amanda Coogan & Paddy Cahill
Performers: Amanda Coogan, Dee Roycroft, Ann Maria Healy, Anna Berndston,
Olwen Fouere and Victoria Mc Cormack.
Buried deep in the market area off Dublin’s Capel Street, almost
underground, is the historic Irish abbey, St Mary’s. Here, in this hallowed
space, six women dressed in yellow come, one by one and night after
night, to wash and re-wash the long garment they are wearing. The
act of repeatedly submerging and scrubbing the cloth becomes an act
of cleansing and rebirth as their bodies twist and contort, becoming
harbingers of an almost talismanic energy. TIME … AND AGAIN and
THE DANCE OF MAKING by Mary Wycherley
Sat 21 July - Sat 11 August
‘Time…and Again’ was shot in 2009 on a farm near Skibbereen
and is a precursor and conceptually linked work to ‘The Dance
of Making’, 2012. The use of slow motion cinematography and
the deliberate indeterminate time period of the footage, alter
our sense of time and place. The fi lm highlights things past and
present and draws attention to changing futures.
‘The Dance of Making’, a three screen fi lm installation, explores
the human processes which lie at the heart of living culture.
Informed by contemporary dance’s deep awareness of the
body, movement and embodiment, this work by Mary Wycherley
focuses on the act of creation in traditional handcrafts and
activities such as uilleann pipemaking, hand weaving and dry
stonewalling.

SOFT DAY31st July | 6.00pm | Free of Charge
For over ten years ‘Soft Day’, the art-science collaboration of artist
Sean Taylor and computer scientist Mikael Fernström, have engaged
with issues relating to natural cycles in time, climate change and its
global effects. Both artists are interested in exploring ‘the cracks’
between various media and creative genres such as expanded theatre,
sound art, socially engaged practice, sculpture, music, dance and the
application of new technologies.

‘World Riddle’ is an extrasensory, immersive installation
created through the collaboration of award-winning
multimedia artist David Bickley and critically acclaimed
composer and sound artist Slavek Kwi. ‘World Riddle’
takes as its inspiration the work of Victorian biologist Ernst
Haeckel. Haeckel represented a powerful voice in the
dissemination of Darwin’s work and also coined the terms
“ecology” and “stem cell”. He is best known however for
producing countless and unbelievably detailed drawings
of never before seen microscopic life. Drawing together
elements of Victorian science, etching, digital video, ambient
music and 3D glasswork this piece creates a powerful gallery
experience, representing a cutting edge fusion of techniques
and art forms.

THE MUSEUM OF MINIATURE4 North Street, Skibbereen | July 28th – August 4th - (closed Sunday July 29th)
Skibbereen Arts Festival presents (For-One-Week-Only), West Cork’s
inaugural, pop-up and wondrous Museum of Miniature!
Hundreds of artists from all disciplines and backgrounds were invited to
contribute, and the Museum’s initiators artists Tess Leak and Marie Brett
are delighted that the museum’s been sent tiny works from all over the
world revealing a vast range of ideas and imagination in epic proportions.
Packages have arrived from a stone carver in Australia; a performance
artist based on Fogo Island and a choreographer in London. Others have
included miniature paintings, paper sculptures, intricate embroideries and
other diminutive creations in clay, glass, wood and fabric from Poland, Chile,
Austria, Germany and Ireland.
The Museum of Miniature is also thrilled to be hosting the John Erickson
Museum of Art (JEMA) a project developed by US artist Sean Miller. JEMA, a
location-variable museum, works with international artists to create projects
that require mobility and/or aim to destabilize traditional notions of art or art
institutions. JEMA is a museum that supports the efficient delivery of art to
its viewers. JEMA’s galleries are housed in a series of 16”x12”x9” aluminium
carrying cases (and also occur in other unconventional spaces). JEMA has
collaborated with artists such as Yoko Ono, Sergio Vega and Max Becher and
it’s visit to Skibbereen Arts Festival is presented in collaboration with artist-
curator Annette Moloney. See www.jema.us

July 28th – August 4th - (closed Sunday July 29th)
Dublin based contemporary artist Mark Garry integrates music and
sonic elements in a number of the elements of his cultural output,
he has engaged in a number of ambitious musical collaborations,
has released a number of critically acclaimed records and employs
sonic elements in his installations. For Skibbereen arts festival Mark
is showing a number of Aeolian wind harps (Harps played by the
wind). These Harps are reliant upon the environment in which they
are located, being activated by the strength and direction of the winds
traveling through them. The tone they generate differs at different
times of the day, enabling a situation where each individual
listener experience is completely unique.

FLOCKVarious Locations - Skibbereen
Saturday July 28th - Saturday August 4th
This year Skibbereen Arts Festival is delighted to
introduce a community arts element to the Festival.
Entitled ‘Flock’, this exciting Community Arts Project
included participants from Skibbereen Day Care
Centre, Co-Action and Skibbereen Parent and Toddler
group. Local people worked collaboratively with artist
Tess Leak to create haiku-inspired poetry and images
celebrating the rich and diverse birdlife of West Cork.
The project was based on a simple premise but the
workshops with Tess allowed participants to share
their own memories, stories and local knowledge of
birdlife in West Cork. Feedback from people showed
that participants really enjoyed the experience of taking
part in this project, so keep an eye out for their local
art work!
Tess Leak worked with installation artist Tomasz
Madajezak to make banners, posters and postcards
from the images and poems created by these
Skibbereen based community groups. Some of the
resulting works can be seen outside in the Town
Square and in Skibbereen Community & Family
Resource Centre for the duration of the festival. Make
sure to look carefully for hidden surprises!
‘Flock’ is a community arts project created especially
for Skibbereen Arts Festival and is supported by
Skibbereen Community and Family Resource Centre.

IARLA Ó LIONÁIRD& STEVE COONEYAbbeystrewry Church | 8pm | €15
This year the Skibbereen Arts Festival is proud to welcome to Skibbereen
a singer of rare talent, Iarla O’ Lionáird, along with virtuoso guitarist,
Steve Cooney, to explore some of the great songs of the tradition in an
acoustic setting.
Ó Lionáird grew up and learned his craft in the musical heartland of Cúil Aodha in
the West Cork Gaeltacht. From his iconic early recording of the vision song ‘Aisling
Gheal’ whilst still a boy, through many recordings O’Lionaird established himself
both as a masterful exponent of sean nós song and as a pioneer in its renewal and
development.
Born in Melbourne, Australia, Steve Cooney has been one of the most infl uential
musicians working in Ireland. His collaborations with Seamus Begley, Sharon
Shannon, Liam O Maoinlaoi have been groundbreaking and he has recorded and
performed live with Moving Hearts, Donal Lunny, Sinead O’Connor, Paul Brady and
Altan.
Tonight’s performance, in honour of Canon James Goodman, is a rare opportunity to
witness two unique artists at the height of their powers collaborating in the intimate
and beautiful surroundings of Abbeystrewery Church.
“His voice will astound you. It soars - and it’s profound, simple and beautiful… Genius
is the operative word here…count yourself lucky to hear an artist like this once in your
lifetime”

popular band. The Striolán Céilí Band are proving to be a

Apples of Golan tells the epic story of one village in the Israeli occupied
Golan Heights. Filmed over three years from 2009 to 2012, fi lm-makers
Keith Walsh and Jill Beardsworth, immersed themselves in the local
community of full of rappers, salsa dancers, holy men, traitors, lovers,
freedom fi ghters and their heartbroken mothers, set against the backdrop
of the revolution raging in their homeland Syria, as it creeps through the
orchards, towards their homes in Israel.
in 1967 Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria. Before the occupation,
this Arab village was one of 139. Only fi ve remain. 130,000 Syrian Arabs were
permanently forced from their homes. This fi lm tells the story of one of
these villages, Majdal Shams, and it’s people. They are too few to fi ght. Israel

PERFORMED BY: ANTHONY MORRIS
“1958. Mary and Paddy met. They did everything that couples do; fell in love, got
married, had a baby. Then they had a second, and a third, a fourth, a fi fth, a sixth,
a seventh, an eight, a ninth, a tenth, an eleventh, a twelfth, and fi nally a thirteenth.
Unlucky for some…”
SIBLINGS ANTHONY and Róisín Morris share family history in this charming
performance about their father’s clinical depression and his eventual death from
Alzheimer’s disease. Growing up on the “fi nest farm in Wexford”, two children in “a
baker’s dozen”, the pair have different memories of their father: Anthony remembers
a gentle man, Róisín a sad one. The recollections, however, are full of joy, thanks to a
mischievous presentation, and amusing tales of dinner shifts, battles over bedclothes,
and the annual joy of Christmas, their father’s favourite time of year. While Anthony’s
stories are told from the stage, Róisín’s version is told through the use of photographs
and recordings.

An archive night of local footage is now an integral part of the Skibbereen
Arts Festival and is an event which is enjoyed by all. This year, we have
gathered footage from a wide variety of people pertaining to Skibbereen and
the surrounding area. The footage stretches from Sherkin Island & Baltimore,
to Rosscarbery Fair in the 1950s, to Drimoleague, to Ballydehob and also
features Castletownshend, Glandore, Union Hall and a wide range of events
based in Skibbereen itself. There are people, places and events featured which
will be known to many and also many people, places and events which sadly
are no longer with us. This promises to be a very special night where we can
see the character and characters of our local area on the big screen, from a
short documentary on The Southern Star, to a re-inactment of The Sack of
Baltimore to the old Skibbereen Mart. This will certainly be a festival highlight
not to be missed. Thanks to Adrian Healy, Tim Looney, Peter McCarthy and Sean McCarthy
for kindly contributing this wonderful footage!

‘Living Colour’ is a fi lm about an abstract watercolour painter who takes
three and a half minutes to climb into a van, a chatterbox stone carver
with the shakes, a woman who colours her dreams, a precision ink-drawer
who stares into fi res, a diminutive sage who makes politically satirical
animations and the motley collective of other artists with special needs
with whom they share a studio. It is a charming, moving and hilarious
refl ection on the deeply human need to make art.
This 82-minute observational documentary fi lm explores the world of an
unusual artists’ collective in Callan, Co. Kilkenny, a studio which focuses
on the artists’ abilities instead of their special needs. As it takes us further
into their unique world, this extraordinary fi lm builds into an often hilarious
and intimate portrayal of a medley of charming and vibrant characters.
“ ‘Living Colour’ is a wonderful documentary …The fi lm’s gentle, meditative pace
catches the mood of much of the art and the artists involved in the fi lm and its
moments of humour, insight and joy come together to defi ne this uplifting and
enlightening piece of cinema and its extraordinary tale of people communicating
through art.”

HIDDEN GIFTSDir: Nick Higgins | 26mins
‘Hidden Gifts’ explores the mysterious relationship between
artistic expression and mental illness through the story
of Scotsman Angus MacPhee, who was diagnosed with
schizophrenia in 1946 . Angus was taken from his island
home on South Uist to Craig Dunain psychiatric hospital
among the hills near Inverness in the Scottish highlands. For
the next fi fty years he spoke not a single word to any member
of the hospital staff. His sole expression was his solitary
weaving of clothes - including coats, gloves and boots – from
grass. MacPhee’s work as an example of art produced by
someone who has escaped social conditioning and who,
because he lives in a dream world, has direct access to his
unconscious mind and its inate compulsion to create.
“Higgins’ fi lm is a beautiful gift, the case study of an ordinary man
living a sheltered life in his own reality. Art therapists, students, and
anyone in the mental health fi eld will benefi t from MacPhee’s story.”

IRENE BUCKLEY
SOPRANO EMMA NASH ORGANIST RHODA DULLEA.
With its stunning camerawork and striking
compositions, Carl Dreyer’s ‘The Passion of Joan of
Arc’ convinced the world that movies could be art.
Based on the actual trial records, Joan endures the
loathing, envy, taunting and deceit of the French
church court. It is only through her unwavering faith
that she can endure and rise above her tormentors.
This is the second ever live performance of a score
that was specially commissioned by the 23rd Cork
French Film Festival organised by Alliance Française
de Cork. Composer Irene Buckley has used the text
and the structure of the Requiem Mass, to create an
evocative new work scored for soprano (Emma Nash),
organ (Rhoda Dullea) and electronics. Her pieces
are characterised by the dynamic interplay between
medieval and contemporary composition and have
been performed in locations from Carnegie Hall to
Muziekgebouw (Amsterdam). With its raw emotional
power, evocative setting and haunting score, ‘The
Passion of Joan of Arc’ is an awe-inspiring evening of
music and fi lm.

ALL DIVIDED SELVESSkibbereen Town Hall | 3pm | €7
Dir: Luke Fowler - 90mins
Luke Fowler is known for his fi lm portraits of socially radical fi gures and this work, ‘All Divided Selves’, is one of the four nominees for the 2012 Turner Prize. The social and cultural revolutions of the 1960s were spearheaded by the
charismatic, guru-like fi gure of Glasgow born Psychiatrist R.D. Laing. ‘All
Divided Selves’ concentrates on archival representations of Laing and his
colleagues as they struggled to acknowledge the importance of considering
social environment and disturbed interaction in institutions as signifi cant
factors in the aetiology of human distress and suffering. ‘All Divided Selves’
reprises the vacillating responses to these radical views and the less
forgiving responses to Laing’s latter career shift; from eminent psychiatrist to
enterprising celebrity. A dense, engaging and lyrical collage - Fowler weaves
archival material with his own fi lmic observations - marrying a dynamic
soundtrack of fi eld recordings with recorded music by Éric La Casa, Jean-Luc
Guionnet and Alasdair Roberts.

THE MOTHER’S ARMSBY JOHN NEESkibbereen Town Hall | 8.00pm | €12
Up in the hills, in the wilds of Donegal, a dilapidated two storey
building surrounded by tumbling sheds, rusty tin, rotting timber
and the yard surrendered to weeds... This is The Mothers Arms
Singing Lounge, a quiet place where lonely farmers and weary
travellers are drawn to while away the empty hours.
The previous proprietor has recently been sent to prison and his daughter
has returned from Louisiana to run the place but the banks are circling like
vultures. It’s been a long time since there was any singing. Then one beautiful
summer’s morning a vintage automobile, driven by Taxi McDermott, founder
of The Caledonia Highly Strung Orchestra, struggles up the hill. So begins
The Mother’s Arms, the latest offering from the inimitable Little John Nee
which offers up a comic, musical helter-skelter ride through a surreal, but
frighteningly believable, rural Gothic landscape.
With Jeremy Howard, Andrew Galvin and Orlaith Gilcreest, the quartet playing
the members of the aforementioned Caledonia Highly Strung Orchestra.

“Picturing things, taking a view, is what makes us human; art is making sense and giving shape to

Over the past fi ve decades, Gerhard Richter has built an oeuvre whose seminal position
within the development of late twentieth and early twenty fi rst century art cannot

suspenseful cycle of the artistic process: making, viewing, judging, destroying, waiting,

Workshops for Teenagers Workshops for Teenagers
TEENAGERS PIXILATION ANIMATION WORKSHOP Skibbereen Town Hall | Monday 29th July – Friday 3rd August | €70
This year Skibbereen Arts Festival is delighted to present a 5
day pixilation animation workshop for teenagers aged 14+ with
animation expert Steve Woods based on the theme – The Mad
Hatter’s Tea Party!!!
Pixilation is a special animation stop motion process. Normally drawings and objects
are shot in animation, pixilation is where humans are manipulated frame by frame in
front of a movie camera. This process makes for an excellent educational workshop. In
the workshop, students and emerging filmmakers learn about timing and movement
inside the cinema-graphic frame. Timing and movement are constant themes that
preoccupy the animator’s mind.
The aim of the workshop is to make a finished piece. As well as acquiring some
background knowledge on the principles of animation it is intended the participants will
also achieve a confidence to work with this technique themselves in the future.
Steve Woods began working in animation in 1987. Since 1994 he has taught
experimental animation in the National Film School in Ireland and occasionally writes
and talks on animation. He has directed a number of animation workshop films
in schools, prisons and in Palestine and Syria. Steve is currently the director for
LIGHTBOX Ireland’s animation festival and is also on the board of the Galway Film
Fleadh.
Workshop times vary from day to day so please contact the box office for further details.

WEST CORK ARTS CENTRE | Saturday August 4th | 11am | €10
“Richter was so open and didn’t control me. That was important for me
in developing our conversation. Normally, there are a hundred questions
in your mind! But you have to know to forget them and really to develop
questions spontaneously, improvising, and not to have all the things you’ve
read in your head. You need to create this atmosphere where the subject
feels free to express himself, to be open and not demanding.”
Skibbereen Arts Festival is delighted to host a workshop with the German
director Corinna Belz, director of the acclaimed documentary Gerhard Richter
Painting. Corinna will present an intimate workshop where she will share
her experiences as a director working on art documentaries. The workshop
is recommended for aspiring and experienced fi lm-makers, artists and
those seeking a greater understanding of working with artists on fi lm. The
participants will be encouraged to join in a Q& A throughout the session.
Corinna Belz studied philosophy, art history and media sciences in Cologne,
Zurich and Berlin. Since then she has been working as a television producer,
scriptwriter and director on numerous productions of various genres. Her
fi lms include Life After Microsoft(2000), Other American Voices (2001),
