Reader’s Theater

Reader’s theatre allows students to develop both verbal and nonverbal communication skills, along with encouraging active listening. It also helps students develop their ability to work cooperatively. During this time, students will learn to read scripts, choose plays and create scenery. Primary Art Week 1, Cartooning -‐ Curriculum has been specifically designed for the young beginner -‐ basic shapes and simple lines. Through practical exercises (and a little practice), students will learn how to draw cartoon people, places, animals, and things -‐ along with a few famous characters from film and television.

Week 2, Drawing -‐ Learn to draw what you see! There will be no draw-‐what-‐the-‐instructor-‐draws lessons in this class. Weather-‐permitting, students will step outside and explore their surroundings with sketchbook in hand. Students will discover drawing techniques and sharpen their observational skills via a wide range of drawing media including graphite, pastel, and ink.

Week 3, Painting -‐ Paint like the Masters! Students will explore the vast history of painting (the ancient murals in the Caves of Lascaux, the portraits of the Renaissance, the colors of Impressionism, the emotions of Expressionism, the bizarre ideas of Modernism) Students will learn how to set-‐up a palette, mix colors, and the methods of designing and creating images with watercolor and acrylic paint. In middle school science this summer, we will be completing labs to try to ask the question, "Why?" Global Conflict (Social Studies)

War and conflict has defined United States history. In this course, the different conflicts in the 19th and 20th century will help you think about global conflict in a different way. Covering the Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Cold War, Vietnam War and current Middle Eastern conflict we will answer questions such as why do wars happen, how does technology affect war, and how can war be prevented? Explore the power of imagination and creativity through movement and expression! With an emphasis on process over product, activities will capitalize on each child’s sense of wonder and play, along with critical thinking and problem solving skills. The final day of the workshop will feature a showcase where students can share what they have learned with a live audience!

For those students who truly love the smell of the greasepaint and the roar of the crowd! Under the guidance of professional theatrical and musical directors, students will participate in every phase of rehearsal, production, and performance of a popular Disney Jr. show. There will be a range of challenge to engage those new to the stage as well as those with previous theater experience.
