Students studying Geography gain a diverse view of the world we live in and the physical issues which have made it as it is.

It is one of the most relevant subjects you can choose.

Unit G1Changing Physical Environments Investigating global warming and floods

Unit G2Changing Human Environments Investigating population and settlements

In Year 13 you will study two more units:

Unit G3Contemporary ThemesDevelopment and Extreme Environments.

Unit G4SustainabilityEnvironmental and political/social issues

Unit G3 requires you to write three 45 minute essays. Unit G4 is a 105 minute decision making paper.

Where do I go from here?

The course develops your numeracy, literacy and IT skills and to be good at Geography, you need to be able to gain knowledge and show excellent evaluation skills.

Given this, Geography is seen as a good ‘all round’ A level by universities and employers.

Geography is one of the 10 “facilitating subjects” that the leading universities encourage students to take.

There are a number of degree courses that stem from Geography and in recent years, students have gone on to courses in Environmental Science, Planning, Oceanography and International Development to name but a few. Environmental Analysis and Conservation are two growing fields that employ Geographers.

The Music course is for learners who have a keen interest in making music as a hobby or who want to study the subject at university or college level.

High levels of self-discipline, self confidence and advanced social, communication and inter-personal skills are essential requirements for students who opt for this course, as is the experience of working with other musicians in an ensemble setting.

Why choose Music?

WJEC

Neither a GCSE qualification in Music or Associated Board style instrumental grades are necessary, although both would certainly be very advantageous. However, some experience of performing either vocally or on an instrument is useful to perform pieces of between grade three and five standard at the performance exam. It is essential learners taking this course have regular vocal or instrumental lessons with a professional tutor.

At GCE Level learners study:Performing: as a soloist and/or part of an ensemble.Composing: using the ‘Sibelius’ computer software to compose two contrasting pieces of music.Appraising: two units comprised of three ‘set’ works; the orchestral music and musical theatre, specifically the shows Les Miserables, West Side Story and Guys and Dolls. At A level you study a wide range of genres from the 20th and 21st century alongside one larger set work. Performing examinations take place sometime during March and April; composition coursework will need to be completed in the spring term and the appraising examination will take place in the summer term.

During the summer term of Year 12 you will also undertake a week’s study of a new language, culminating in an international lunch for fellow students and staff.

PSEDuring your time in the Sixth Form you will attend a variety of talks, performances and workshops aimed at helping you develop as an individual, and ensuring you have the skills and attributes to be a valuable member of society.

Work Related EducationYou undertake a week of work experience, in a location relevent to your future plans, thirty hours of volunteering work in order to further develop skills and a team enterprise activity, with each team facing a real panel similar to the ‘Dragons’ Den”.

Individual InvestigationThe final component of the WBQ Core is the investigation. This is an extended essay on a topic of your own choice, investigating the Welsh perspective and another perspective on your chosen topic. The grading of the investigation will have an impact on the final outcome of the WBQ resulting in a grade from A* - B or A - C (depending on the Essential Skills studied).

The investigation is an essential tool for your application to universities, demonstrating a whole host of skills and your depth of understanding and commitment to your chosen field of study.

All of the components above are supported by a team of expert tutors as well as an innovative mentoring scheme, ensuring you meet half termly with one of the Senior Leadership Team at the school or one of the Bacc experts to discuss your progress and attainment.

Work Experience

As a Sixth Form, we recognise that work experience forms a vital element of career planning.

Through the Welsh Baccalaureate in Year 12, students investigate their preferred career paths, research suitable employers and complete a week’s work experience in July. For some students, a work placement in Year 13 allows them to enhance their experiences and tailor their evidence to suit their chosen career path. Primary education and the nursing sector are both careers that require students to have gained practical ‘hands on’ experience in the workplace. We believe that by offering work placements for students who plan to follow these career paths, we are acknowledging and supporting what the prospective employer requires from a good applicant.

Working collaboratively within the community and with the students themselves, we offer a programme of work placements that allow students to establish relationships, gain practical experience and ultimately to develop a portfolio of evidence that can be presented to future employers.

What the students say:Laura Davis Year 13 – on a Textiles placement with Marks and Spencer, one day a week:

“Work experience gives you an invaluable insight into your chosen industry and can really be the make or break decision as to whether you go into that field. Work experience gets you out of the classroom environment and into working life, which is significant when you are trying to stay ahead of the game.”

What the students say:Isobel Lea Year 13 – on a Primary school placement, one afternoon a week:

“Working in a school has helped me to get a real feel for the pressures and rewards of being a Primary school teacher. I am creating a portfolio of photographs, lesson plans and students’ work that I will be able to show as evidence in university interviews.”
