SIU Sustainability Council Projects Final Report Project title: SIUC / Carbondale Bike and Pedestrian Path Project I.D. #: 41212 Award date: Spring 2012 Completion date: December 2016 Total Funds Used: $66,187.07 Project This project installed approximately 370 feet of poured concrete to provide a bicycle and pedestrian path located to the west of the Studio Arts Building at 432 South Washington Street. This section is part of a larger path designed and constructed by the City of Carbondale that runs from the Town Square at the intersection of Main Street and Washington Street south and will connect to SIU’s northern pedestrian overpass. Summary of Results This project reaches out beyond the campus and provides an integral connection to the community’s plan for a more inclusive bicycle and pedestrian path network. Fruition of this path is an important step to improving sustainable local transportation. It provides a safe and affordable route for people to commute from one area of town to another area be it for work or recreation. It provides an opportunity for visiting bicycle and exercise enthusiasts a convenient way to explore the offerings that the University provides to the community. Promotion of Sustainability The construction of this path aided the University’s and the City of Carbondale’s ability to apply and receive a bicycle-friendly distinction from the League of American Bicyclists.
