SIUC Assessment Report Revised August 2017
SIUC Annual Assessment Report IBHE requires a review of non-accredited programs every eight years. These programs are required to submit an Assessment Plan mid-cycle and a Self-Study Report every eight years. Programs are also required to submit an Assessment Reports annually. Submit documents to [email protected]. For further information, see the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs website (http://pvcaa.siu.edu/associate-academic-programs) or call 453-7653.

Aviation Flight Assessment Trends
August 2012 – May 2017
The Aviation Flight program currently assesses seven Student Learning Outcomes:
SLO1: Students will be able to apply relevant aeronautical knowledge and skills in planning and conducting safe flights as an instrument-rated Commercial pilot.
SLO2: Students will demonstrate the ability to communicate clearly. SLO3: Students will exercise effective aeronautical decision making while planning and
conducting single pilot flight operations. SLO4: Students will demonstrate the ability to engage in team-based work activities involving
multi-disciplinary and diverse groups. SLO5: Students will demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge of contemporary aviation issues
to professional practice. SLO6: Students will recognize the need for and engage in life-long learning. SLO7: Students will possess either the Multi-Engine rating or the Flight Instructor Certificate.
Previously, the Aviation program assessed four Student Learning Outcomes:
SLO1: Students will be able to apply relevant aeronautical knowledge and skills in conducting safe flight as a professional pilot.
SLO2: Students will demonstrate the ability to communicate clearly and exercise effective
aeronautical decision making while conducting single pilot and crew flight operations. SLO3: Students will demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge of contemporary aviation issues
to professional practice and recognize the need for life-long learning. SLO4: Students will possess the skills and knowledge required to obtain the Commercial Pilot
Certificate with Instrument Rating, and either the Multi-Engine rating or the Flight Instructor Certificate.
While the SLOs have changed, many of the assessment measures have not. Those that were used previously continue to appear in the trends chart below, with a note regarding the previous SLOs assessed. New measures will be noted, but no trend information is available. Information presented in the following charts is based on data recorded in the annual Assessment Matrix currently in use by the Aviation Flight Program. Percentages shown in the tables reflect the portion of students meeting or exceeding the minimum expectation for satisfactory performance as determined by the Aviation Flight program. Further details on these expectations are found in the annual Assessment Matrix.

AF Student Performance in Required Non-Aviation Courses
Fall 2012-Spring 2017
This report provides final course grade statistics for non-aviation courses required for successful completion of the Aviation Flight Associate degree. The numbers reflect only those students coded as AF majors for the semester being reported. Students working toward the AF degree while simultaneously working toward another degree and coded for that other major (AVM, AVT, ENGR, etc.) are not included. The information is taken from the Banner report Class List by Term for Your Unit’s Majors (Open across all Subjects).
While course grades alone are not an effective indicator of achievement of course outcomes, these numbers do provide us with some idea of our students’ performance in their non-aviation coursework.
Provided below is trend information over the last 5 years. Percentages indicate the portion of students passing the courses with a grade of C or better.
*MATH data include the following courses: MATH 108, MATH 111, and MATH 125 **GEOG330 has been dropped from the AAS curriculum in favor of AF211/311. ***Science data include any of the Group I Science courses in the University Core Curriculum. A listing of these courses is available at http://corecurriculum.siu.edu/program-overview/disciplinary/physical-science.php NOTE: As of AY 15-16, SPCM 101 is now CMST101. The tables on the following pages reflect the breakdown of grades by academic year for each course, and further by semester for closer inspection. The far right column, % C or better, is based on all grades reported excluding grades of W (withdraw) and INC (incomplete).
