Area around closed urinal for handicapped misusedSir, For the past few months, on the

western side of Mambalam Railway Sta-tion, where construction of an escalator isin progress, a toilet for physically handi-capped is always kept closed. The locationis very close to our apartment complex.

Passersby including commuters wait-ing at the station have converted the loca-tion into an open urinal as there is nobarricade along the railway tracks to stopthem from gaining access. It is causing alot of problems for the residents owing tothe foul smell and unhygienic condition. We are forced to keep the windows closed

which is badly affecting ventilation, especially with the heat soaring. Further, at night, antisocial elements can be seen sitting in groups and drinking near the closed urinal, which isa safety concern for the residents.

We have made a number of appeals to the railway officials to cordon off the area withbarricades, bit no action has been taken so far. Sivasubramaniam, Rajendra Apartments,Babu Rajendra Prasad 1st Street, West Mambalam, Ph: 88254 78055

Sir, After the let-ter ‘Junction oppo-site TASMAC shopmisused as urinal’was published inMambalam Times(March 10-17 is-sue), the officialsconcerned took im-mediate action toclean the junctionand place a warningboard.

I thankMambalam Timesfor publishing myletter and ChennaiCorporation for its

Junction near TASMAC cleaned after report inMambalam Times

quick action. V. S. Narayanaswamy, Motilal Street, T.Nagar

Mosquito problem on the riseSir, Mosquito breeding is on the rise in the city, especially in this

congested neighbourhood. On residents’ complaints, Corpora-tion staff had done fogging operations a couple of times, but thatdid not have any long-term effect.

With the mercury soaring, it was hoped that the mosquitonuisance would reduce to some extent. But it has only beenproliferating leading to the risk of the spread of infectiousdiseases. I appeal to Chennai Corporation to carry out systematicfogging operations round the year on alternate days as a viablesolution to control the mosquito menace.

They should also, on a war footing, clean all the waterways andregularly spray larvicide in the water. A media campaign shouldbe planned to spread awareness among the public about commu-nity hygiene and avoidance of water stagnation in any form as itserves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes. V. Vijayalakshmi,18th Avenue, Ashok Nagar, Ph: 99620 83755

Vendors disturbresidents withloudspeakers

Sir, Vegetable sellers, scrapbuyers, knife sharpeners andothers are using public addresssystems to woo customers.

They repeatedly play prere-corded tracks loudly to promotetheir products. Often these ven-dors come to residential areas inthe afternoon when many resi-dents, especially senior citizenslike me, are taking a nap andcause disturbance with their loudannouncements. Even at othertimes, the repeated announce-ments are unnerving.

I don’t know if they have takenpolice permission to use suchloud systems in residential ar-eas. Will the police stop thisnuisance? S. Sivasubraman-ian, 994, 74th Street, 12th Sec-tor, K. K. Nagar, 99402 80073

Don’t dump waste in the open

Sir, Some neighbours areregularly dumping householdwaste, food waste and driedleaves outside my house inAnnamalai Nagar 1st Street,West Mambalam. Thoughthere is a community bin in thestreet for the very purpose, Iwonder why some residents aredumping garbage on the road-side.

I appeal to Chennai Corpo-ration to declare all spacesother than those earmarkedfor dumping garbage as ‘NoLitter’ zones and take strin-gent action against the offend-ers.

After all, hygiene begins athome and, without the coop-eration of the citizens, we cannever dream of a ‘Clean andGreen Chennai’. Ambika, 38/52, Annamalai Nagar 1stStreet, Mettupalayam,West Mambalam

Appeal to relay Hanumar Koil StreetSir, Hanumar Koil Street, West Mambalam is in a bad condition. The street was dug up for

some maintenance work a few months back. But it has not been re-laid so far. Its surface hascompletely worn off and is riddled with potholes.

As it offers connectivity to Mambalam railway station, many pedestrians use the road.Motorists too have a tough time riding on it due to the potholes and loose gravel. Dust is thrownup every time a vehicle passes by.

Adding to the woes of street users, pushcart vendors block the street. Some shops havespread their wares and display boards right on the street. In fact, one shop has built a permanentstructure on the margin.

I appeal to the Chennai Corporation to take immediate action to repair the street and rid itof the encroachments which are hampering the free movement of pedestrians and vehicles. S.Subramanian, 67/4C, Narasimhan Street, West Mambalam

Buses not halting at Sabari Inn stopSir, I am a resident of Thirumalai Lane. T. Nagar. There is a bus

stop next to Sabari Inn in Thirumalai Pillai Lane, close toBazullah Road junction. But no MTC bus halts here as it seemsthe stop has been abandoned by MTC.

The nearest stop, which is more than a kilometer away, forcommuters coming from Ambattur/Anna Nagar/Valluvar kottamside is either at Valluvar Kottam signal/Vidhyodhaya or JoyAlukkas in North Usman Road. Senior citizens, women andchildren living in the vicinity of Thirumalai Pillai Lane are put tolot of difficulty because of this.

Hence I request the MTC authorities to restore Sabari Inn stopor create a new stop at State Bank of India, Bazullah Road for thebenefit of commuters. S. S. Krishnan, F3 Aishwarya LakshmiFlats, 72. Thirumalai Pillai Lane, T. Nagar, Ph: 99416 77678

He was a Nepalese national, and had been missing since the bankrobbery came to light on the morning of March 26.

The police have also arrested a car driver from Bengaluru and twoNepali security guards employed in two buildings in Anna Nagar andRamapuram for allegedly helping Shabi Lal.

After the robbery came to light, the bank officials had filed a case inK. K. Nagar Police Station. As the police suspected the culprits mighthave fled to their home country, they had sought the help of Interpolthrough the CBI to nab them.

Police personnel from Chennai, camping on the India-Nepal border, are trying to negotiate with the Nepal police through CBI officials toget the custody of the suspect.

But Nepal police have so far refused to hand over Shabi Lal as thereis no extradition treaty between India and Nepal to transfer suspectsinvolved in criminal cases.

Shabi Lal, his son Dillu Lal and four other accomplices are wantedin connection with the heist. According to the police, the suspects hadbroken open two lockers from which they removed Rs. 40 lakhs worthjewellery as confirmed by the locker owners.

The culprits had used gas cutters to break open a grille and gainaccess to the bank vault. The suspicion directly fell on Shabi Lal andhis son Dillu as they had gone missing.

It was further confirmed by forensics experts as fingerprints collectedfrom the crime scene matched with that of Shabi, Dillu and one otherperson. Further investigation revealed that apart from Shabi and Dillu, four more persons had been involved in the crime.

In an attempt to nab the culprits before they fled the country, thepolice alerted railway and border police by circulating their photographs.

Shabi Lal was staying with his family in the outhouse in the bank’scompound. Two months back, he had sent his wife and daughter backto Nepal, but his son stayed back.
