Discuss the role of education in socialization of children.


Definition of

• Etymological meaning of education (Chandra 2008)

• Latin word “Educatum” composed of two terms “E” and “DUCO”. “E” implies a progress from inward to outward while “DUCO” means developing or to lead or progressing.


• The term education is also connected with the Latin words “Educare” which means to rear, to bring up or to nourish a child, and “Educere” which means to bring forth, to lead, to draw out or to train


• Education, thus, is literally the process of developing the inner abilities and powers of an individual.


• Aristotle (384-322): “Education is the creation of a sound mind in a sound body”.


• Farrant (2005), education is a social process which socializes the child and causes certain changes in his/her behavior.


• Spencer (1820-1903), the development of good moral character.


•Shankaracharya, education is the realization of self


• Dewey (1859-1952) maintains that, education is the development of all those capacities in the individual which will enable him/her to control his/her environment and fulfill his/her possibilities.


• Therefore, from the scholarly definitions, education is the continuous process of transmitting:

attitudes, knowledge, skills and culture from one generation to

another.


• Education, in its widest sense, can mean everything that is learnt by an individual in society

Thus; Education transmits what is worthwhile in a morally acceptable manner.

• Chandra (2008:136): Socialization as a process where by an individual learn to behave in accordance with social traditions and mores.


• Durkheim: “Man is man, in fact, only because he lives in a society”.

• To him; socialization means a process of being fitted into a complex social environment.


• Macionis (2007): man is man because he shares with others a common culture.

• Thus, socialization simply means a transmission of culture.


• Ogburn W.F: socialization is the process by which the individual internalizes (learns to conform to) the norms of the group.


• Hughes (2008): Socialization is a continuous social learning.


• Shankarrao (2005): socialization as the life-long process through which an individual learns the culture (way of life) of a society in order to become a fully integrated member of that society.

• Thus it is seen as the process that begins at birth and continues unceasingly until the death of the individual


• Therefore, socialization is all about adaptation to a society’s way of life,

• It takes place mainly through social interactions. • It is a means through which an individual creates

and interprets the situation s/he experiences. • It is the one that has to do with helping an

individual to be able-bodied member of society.

• Haralambos (2002): Social dynamics is the process of social life that patterns institutional development and has to do with social change.

• Comte (1798-1857): social dynamics is a part of sociology, which focuses on whole societies as the unit of analysis and reveals how they developed and changed through time.


• Thus, social dynamics means understanding what each individual being finds values.

• It includes seeing the value in yourself and learning how to communicate it effectively to others.


• Also implies seeing the value in other people and understand how to get them to communicate that value to you. Social dynamics is, thus, everything in the society.

• Thus, education will train useful children who will obediently confirm to society’s norms, and will accept the role and status that society will confer upon them when they have finished their schooling (what is called socialization).


• Thungu (2008): in formal education, socialization is attained through school.

• School provides with cultural achievements of one’s society; opportunities to acquire social and vocational abilities which are necessary in order to make one a social, useful and economically productive member of the Society.


• Since children come from different backgrounds, the work of the school therefore is to intercept and change or modify those aspects which may not be acceptable to the community.

• Also, those aspects of training which are meaningful are encouraged.


Shoes we stand in..

The only way one becomes a member of a society is socialization. To be a social being, an individual person needs education. Thus, educating is socializing.Then, they are mutually/intimately interrelated and interdependent disciplines. They are inseparable and are like two faces of the same coin.


However, not all educational activities aim at socializing an individual. Socializing activities are those whose aim is to make people more alike (structuralism). But some of educating activities aim at making people more distinct (conflict theory).
