This weekend, we celebrate Diocesan Missions.

So how shall we celebrate?

First let’s remember that all of us, by virtue of our Baptisms, are called to be mis-

sionary disciples. We are disciples, first, if we are trying to follow Jesus. We are

missionaries if we “Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord.”

It’s not necessary to go to a far off land to do this. Wherever we are, if we find anyone in need of

strengthening by our help, or a reminder of how God wants us to live, we are being missionary

disciples.

Remember, the Creed is our concise “Good News,” our “elevator speech.” You

know, what you would say if you had only 3 or fewer minutes to tell someone

about the most important things you can think of. The decision to live “the Good

News” is how well we follow Jesus’ teachings.

Jesus, God and Man, knows it is likely that we will sin (concupiscence). He comes

to us through the Sacraments, prayer, Bible reading, and good fellowship. He gives

us the opportunity to repair our broken relationships through Reconciliation &

Penance. Praise God!

Through the Diocese of Rochester, the Sisters of St. Joseph are bringing the Good

News of Jesus to marginalized people of Brazil while the Sisters of Mercy do the

same in Chile. These consecrated women have discerned that their mission is to

go abroad to share the Good News and live among the people, showing by the

example of their lives, the love of God.

So, let’s celebrate by examining our consciences and celebrating the Sacrament of

Reconciliation often. Let’s celebrate by participating in Mass, gratefully receiving

Jesus in the Eucharist to strengthen us in our individual circumstances and as mis-

sionaries where we are. Let’s celebrate by offering our prayers and gifts to the Sis-

ters, as they are our diocesan representatives in far off lands. Let’s celebrate by

giving our lives over to God! Patty

Fifth Sunday of Easter

Reading I

14:21-27

Reading II

Revelation 21:1-5a

Gospel John 13:31-33a, 34-35

May 19, 2019 – 5th Sunday of Easter

We live in a caustic environment,

where kindness, love or renewal are

often mocked as soft or unrealistic. It can be legitimately discouraging.

But the word from the beginning was that it would not be easy, and the

pathway would be through pain.

Nothing is achieved without imagi-nation, and today’s readings provide

a vision for those of us willing to con-tinue the quest for something new.

Like the early Christians, we can

help to create a renewed earth.

GIVING TO GOD

The Bible is very explicit about giving of our material possessions to God. Paul wrote in 1 Cor. 16:2, “On the first day of the week each of you should set aside & save whatever one can afford..” The first emphasis we see in this scripture is purposeful regularity of giving to God, “On the first day of the week” obviously means that giving is a regular, planned activity and not a “When I get around to it” function. A second emphasis is that of personal responsibility. “Let everyone” means that each person as an individual has a particular responsibility that can be shifted to someone else according to the Bible. A third emphasis is the practice of proportionate giv-ing. “According to their financial prosperity.” Paul does not state the exact amount we are to give because each can give according to their prosperity. The more the prosperity, the greater the amount given. To sum up Paul’s stewardship theology from this verse we could say: Give at a regular interval from a responsi-ble position with a grateful heart & proportion of what you have received.
